HOW HP. ItECONSTKCCTKD !Il3 ( MtTH) Better Half. The incident we are about to relate occurred, as we are reliably inform ed, on one of the coldest nights of last win ter, but as it has never been in print and is fanl to be a true bill, it will d3 to tell even yet. As tho story goes, a certain roan who lias a comfortable name for summer use, and who resides in a certain locality in this county, got himself outside of an uncertain amount of whiskey on a certain occasion last winter, as already indicated, and going home found that his wife, in consequence of his failure to purchase new coat for an adopted son, had cut up and remodeled his long-cherished wedding fearmeiitfor the lat ter's use, wherenpou he administered to the youth aforesaid a very complete drubbing, and then concluded, while his hand was in, to reconstruct, his wife on strict pugilistic principles. Not being very favorably im pressed with the importance of such a pro ceeding, the party of the second part gave wings as it were to her nether extremities and fortunately succeeded in getting her corporal frame outside of the house, though not in time to prevent the door from being slammed shut en the tail (we believe that is the word) of her drees, whereby to inside appearances she was held a prisoner, seem ingly at the mercy of her whiskey-maddened husband. The latter, either through fear that his wife would evade his grasp or because he thought that a good freezing would answer the same purpose as a good "bating," laid violent hands on such of Ihe offending calico as was within his reach and for several consecutive hours literally fror.e fast, the night beirig, as ve have said, ex tremely cold, to the renina-.it of dry goods within his grasp. Meantime the wife of his bosom, with that presence of mind which characterizes so many of her sex, severed the ties which bound her to her worser hulf by simply undoing the buttons of her dress and quietly slipping out of the gnameut, af ter which she speedily wended her way iu her underclothing to the residence of a sis ter, where she complacently retired to rest and slept the sleep of Ihe Inst until broad daylight iu the morning. What transpired upon her return home next day deponent saith not, but it is to be hoped that tbe hus- oanu, Having no noil nt. recovered uis soter sences in the interim, gave her a welcome mor cordial thau striking. Be that as it may, the story was too good for even the "biter (frost) bitten" to keep it all to him self, ami hence it finally got out and now for the first time finds its way into print. IToOKABLY ' AcoriTTED. In January last we uimirioued the fact that A. C. Mullin, Ksq., a former citizen of this place, had been arrested in Philadelphia on a warrant charging him and three ot the directors with conspiracy to defraud the creditors of the Ashland Savings Bank, Schuylkill county, of which Mr. Mullin had been cashier ami subsequently president. Mr.' M. promptly gave bail lu the sum of 10,000 fur his ap pearance at Ihe next Court, Philip Collius, Ksq., becoming his surely. We stated at the time that from our personal acquaintance with Mr. Mullin, as well as from his integ rity and correct business habits, we could not and would uot lieiieve him guilty of the charge until so pronounced by Ihe verdict of a jury. The case was tried last week at Pottsville, and after the evidence for the proseculiou closed ou Friday evening, one witness only being called by the defense, the Court stated that the Commonwealth had failed to prove the charge, and that the only question liefore the jury was as to tbe dispo sition of the costs. After the argument of counsel and the charge of the Court, the jury retired, and in seven minutes thereafter returned a verdict of tint guilty, and that the prosecutor, J. M. Fric.k, pay the costs of prosecution. This result completely vindi cates Mr. Mullin and affords genuine grati fication to his legion of friends in tiiis, his old Cambria comity home. R. L Johnston, Ksq., of this place, was present during the trial as one of Mr. Mullin's counsel. The three directors of the bank, Messrs, Wm. A. Marr. Wm. H. Bright and John P. Colihan, who were indicted as participants in the conspiracy with Mr. Mullin, were also tried and acquitted at the same time. EXTRA UHDIYA ll Y. Special Sale tf Superb Silks. Hifirs X: H acre, Fifth avenue aud Market street, Pittsburgh, Pa. A young man named Charles T. Cook was knocked down, run over and instantly killed by the Nationil Line freight at the east end of the Altoona depot at a very early hour on Saturday morning last. The un fortunate victim had lieeu Mead-hading" it on the F'ast Line west, and had been put off at several points, but always managed to get on again as soon as the train started and in that way finally succeeded in reaching Tyrone, from whence he made his way to Altoona on the Pittsburgh Express, where it is presumed he got off to avoid detection and intended to board Ihe train again as soon as it moved out of the depot. While thus waiting he was run over, as already stated, and had his left hand cut off at the wrist, his right arm torn from the socket, both legs severed from the Injdy, and his head considerably bruised and cut. The re mains were gathered up and on Monday last forwarded to 3S West street, New York, where it was ascertained that his mother resided. Communication. Thf J'nrpby Mnvemen t yinrjhy vs. (hrlatlsns. North Eisensbcko, May 2, istT. 3fr, E1it"i On tbe evening of the above date the Bethetda Baptist church was well filled by what the leader of the society culled Christ in nut These wero made so by different means, some beinir brought into the fold through the door of one of the ordinances of the church "ihis occurring while in a slate of unconsciousness" others, I.ydla like, "whose heart the Lord opene : and still others by means of temper ance. At the clo e of the meeting, however, yet another class were mentioned and definite ly referred to as those foimr to ncstruction be car.setthey did not siiriCthe pledjre. They s re like those whom the Apostle Paul speaks of ns "loo carnally minded to t subject to the will of the leader of the society." But a word of explanation before we r-o further, tie it known then that we of the prcstnt day find two kinds of temperance societies, the t'hristly and the t'hri-aless. The former we adhere to, hut Ihe latter contains so much of the human element that it is worth hile to do what is advised in one of the KplstlcSi "try every epirlt." Hence the difference between those two societies may be summed up in these words: The former hus a human element controlled by a I i vine element, while the latter is uncontrolled hv any other el ment than the one which composes it. No per son therefore can blame this soclely for being1 influenced by animal excitement. Now we will trive you a few of the contused ideas advanced by the two last speakers, which ouirhr to convince any candid person that. Ihe iruidance of the Holy Spirit whs not present in their minds, moulding their thoughts. The two first speakers did well. They appealed to un derstand what Mr. Murphy's temperance creed requiredi and had no hesitation in saying that its influence over mankind was limited. But others who spoks after them, being pioneers and holding hoiiorile positions, departed very considerably from the idea of temperance first advanced by th? founder of the new crusade so far indeed that the writer was led to con clude that it was high time for Mr. Murphy to cull in some of his disciples end question them in regard to their mission and reordain them, as they are likely to oonruse by their wavering minds the doctrine of temperance as first pro noluated bv thea leader of this praiseworthy movement. This was fully exemplified by twa prominent diameters at the meeeting referred to. These gentlemen are both honorable so far as the writer is aware, but as to their spiritual ity fiod must be the judge. Before I proceed further, however, let mequote a sentiment ex pressed at the beginning of the meeting : "The spirit of Uod is always in these meetings. " Now if this be true, mid we hopu It is, let us note a few things which could not have been promot ed by that spirit. TUe first or the iwo speaket 9 to whom reterence is made announced that tho last meeting was one of energy and success, snd yet ?iy 'he months of two or three witnesses aye, from more than that, as we have learned ihe very contrary has been established. It don't of course militate ngainst a society to have o failure, but it does speak ill for both the society and the person to brvak the cord of truth iu order to stimulate the people. And now let me say that the milk and water question was well gotten up, albeit the analogy was not as good ns if it hud been confined to one vessel, altho' we take It for granted that he wisiied ua to understand that we could not be for aDil against temperance. Admitting this to be true, let us use the honorable gentleman as a proof. Wcnre well nware that Mil societies have some good principles, while the greater mass may not be worthy of such distinction. Thus these good principles may be thought xnri by us thus thinking, and may ttnd lodgment in oiir approbation. Now ihe honorable gent le man is h linn denouncer of Cai holicism and yet a willing praetitionerof someof i:s fundament al ordiiiHiieeS. Thus his mlogy lulls by him self, h? being the example practical. The next honorable mm itev. genueman, who, on account of his great desire to see the cause advanced, put f oi l h nil his power, though humanly, to accomplish it, made two excellent Hddresncs on the subject, but Ihe first was des troyed by the second in a few sentences he gave nttcrance.to. Slill thecontinuam-ctof the meet ing and his great zeal for tbe cause led him to this, and no one can censure him for the mis take. We certainly feel much less disposed to do so, it being the'iitipulse of the Holy Spirit. Well, the metaphor by which this honorable gentleman represented intemperance whs very good, but the question arises. What part of in temperance must you move first in order to set the rest In molinn? Asthe earth is a solid mass, and intemperance equally so, to move the mass of both sou must siart u special parti cle. Hence, then, to remove the greater mass, "unbelief," you must remove intemperance. Thus you see you drive at the effect, which is an impossibility both in the natural and spirit nl world. Therefore the honorable and Kt. Itev. had better take God's way of removing the great mass of intemperance. Next bespoke of intemperance as t lie great popular sin. Ite that hs it may, and it is certainly a great sin, there are other sins equally as great, ami one of at least is more popular and prod ueos worse re sults. To be convinced of its superlative evil go to our asylums, and then you may be indu ced to say lees about the universality of the sin of intemperance, if it is the popular sin you really wish to destroy. Yet neither of these are termed by scripture or history the popular sin. The Jew and Gentile are alike blamed Tor the popular sin, unbelief. Besides, take unbe lief and rotmality and yon have the two great est evils in t lie world. These sins have compro mised with the flesh. Satan and the world. For mality, like all the rest, is the fruit, of unbelief. Hence a remark dropped near ihe close ot the meeting will, if not repented of, be a sin almost sufficient tocondemn Iht utterer. It evidently led the lnn:M-ent mind to believe in substitu tion; for Ihe Scripture reads. Kphesians. chap, ii, verse 8: "(-'or by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of ourselves; but it is the gift of tod. not of works, lost any man should boast." Thus to say that all who will not sign the pledge will go to destruction is of man's work, ami therefore tie has somewhat to boast of. Again, if this be so. let us then, for conve nience, reverse the language of Paul recorded in Romans, chapter viii., verses 1.2.3. 4 ami 4: "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are not iu temperance, who walk not after the flesh, but after ihe spirit of temper ance. (2) For ihe law of the spiiit of life ia (Christ) temperance hath mnrto me free from the law of sin and death. 3) For what the law could not do iu that it was weak, fiod sending His Son (ti mperniice) in the likeness of sinl u I flesh, and for sin, condemned sin In the flesh, (t) that the righteousness of the law miht be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit of temperance. () For to be carnally minded is death, to lie temperately minded is lite and peace." We love that zohI and energy which leads men to exert I hem selves to save the so ils of mankind, but. when sucli zeal ,'ii ml energy docs not exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees. Ood will be robbed of ihe honor clue to Him. though tul may not be inleniioiiHl. Hotice "let Ood lie true, but every man a liar." Horn., ch. ii!., v. 4. If any one disputes the above assertions con cerning the persons referred to, we can make them good. ;Wc love truth and those wbopras tice it. Omega. ArorsT Flower. The se nior practitioner Is one of the oldest and most successful of our physicians, and his fame ha long since extended beyond th bounds of the State. His sons are thoroughly skilled in the system which gained him such eminence, and pa'ietits will receive the same careful treat ment at their hands. If you. are rnptnred the best thing you can do is to call on Dr. Keyrer and have a good Truss fitted. I say fitted, for there are more mistakes made by ill-fitting Trusses in the treatment of rupture t han in any other way. Dr. Keyser's Trusses are not only cheaper hut they are better than can le had anywhere in tiie United States. Dr. Keyaer will core rupture in most cases and will warrant cures.
