IN Mr. William ; iff. ml I'algrave, the Arabian travt Ih-r, I!rilisli Consul, ami English novelist, always finds some " thing interesting to write about, in whatever :iit of the worl.l he may bo. J lis narrative of the journey into Ccn . tral Arabia, which mailo him famous, . is, perhaps, t!ie very best of molem b xiks of travel. lie has not only the " spirit of an explorer, a geographer, ami si .nan of science, hut s.Lso the romantic imagination which coiill give tn such a story as Ji-riiwn Ayha, where the glow ami fervor of life in the Kast are so wonderfully mingled with its tragic i"altii s. His observations, while Con sul at Trt blon le, on the classic South ern shore of the I'.laek Sea, gave him the material f.r his valuable essays on tli Eastern nuestion. More recently, he has helil the Ibitish Consulate at St. Thomas, in the West Indies, ami he is now on his way thence, half, around the world, to the I'hillippine Islands, where he is to represent the (Jucen's (Jovernment ns Consul nt ' M .null . While in the West Indies he 1 i . 1 tot cease to travel and to learn all ; he old 1, consiste ntly with his ollicial duties; and among the places ivhich he ciianced to visit, was one of the most singular and remarkable lakes on ' the sui luce of the earth. j In the summer of 1375, the scientific ! world was suiiied and interested to hear that a lake of constantly boiling i water had been discovered upon or near the summit of the mountainous West Jndian island of Dominica. Uut where was Dominica ? It is not to be won- ; (b red at that this iiuestion was asked , both in England and America. The. fact that the negro nation wnieh occu- , pies the eastern portion of the great' Jslnnd of San Poniingo or Hayti calls itself the Dominican Republic natuially i led to the supposition that this might be the island meant. Jt was in reality i however, another and very dilferent : one, the loftiest of the Lester Antilles, t a Iiritish colony lying between the French Islands of (Juadaloupe and Martinique, and which, instead of being as larre as I reland, contains only about three liundie I square miles. Here we we were told, lay a boiling lake high among the mountains, and hitherto unknown to man. It was not a mere collection of geysers or hot springs, but an expanse of water large enough to deserve the name of a lake, and its luesence explained the cloud of white mako assigned about 200 yards in length fy more than half the same amount in breadth, is that of a g'bmt ' seething cauldron, covered with vapid s'eam, through which, when the veil is lor a moment blown apart by the mounta n breeze, appears a confustd miss of tossing waves crossing and lashing in every direction a cl.aos t f boiling waters,". i In addition to their observations of the dimensions of the lake about GOO by :()(. feet and its general appear- ; a nee,' the travelers ascertained that it was li'ty or sixty feet deep within six feet from ti e shine ; that it is a little ! over 2,400 feet above the level of the sea ; that it is almost wholly supplied with water froic below ; and that the temperature of its waters, was IS.")3 F. j where the waves bent against the shore i and nearly '200 3 F. a little further out. ! At that elevation, and an atmospherie temperature of (54. the boiling point of water is about 207F The centre of ebullition is near the middle of the lake, to which, of course, it was im poss'ble for the party to convey their thermometers. Except at one place, the surrounding cliffs are absolutely ; perpendicular, and permit no approach to the water. The outlet is a scalding stream, which in the lowland becomes known as the Su)phe river already ; spoken of. The journey to the boiling lake of Dominica requires an absence of three days and two nights from lloseau. It is difficult, but otfers no formidable1 obstacles to a fair pedestrian. There is no path save that which i.s made j through the tropical vines by the great , cut lasses which the blacks carry for the purpose; but, on the otiier hand, there is no danger from wild beasts or poisonous snakes, which last are un known on the island, and the climate of the elevated districts is delightful. Mr. I'algrave piedicts that many oth ers will visit this wonderful r-uion, and it seems to us that not only Dom inica, with its boiling lake, but many other West Indian islands, present at tractions which American travelers would hardly neglect, if cognizant of them. Last slimmer tiiis lake was visited ly J Mr. I'alijrave, nnd he has now contiib- ; litetl to Mni-iuHl'tn' ILi'jaziia: the tirst detailed description of it given to the general public. It seems certain that the lake wn nevtr seen 1' any Kuro jioan prior to the month of .January, 1 875, and probably it had never been seen by any native. Traditions point ed to its existence, but these appear to have been based upon the fact that a stream of waini and Miilky waterknown as the Sulphcr river, rushes headlong 1 from the highlands down to the sea, ; and a boiling soiice seems necessary to J ncconnt for the heat of its waves. , This, however, might have had itsori- ; gin in one of the so-called soufritres. i no abundant in the volcanic i-dands of . the West 1 ndies, t-oii-dsng tf the floor J of some thing crater where tepid, hoi, ' or boiling spiings give lorth steam, ' gasses, and occasionally lofty jets of water. Indeed, it turned out that the . J.oiling l.tke was situated in a soufriere ! the most active and extensive in the j ent'u e A rchipclago. Two expeditions f to this region had preceded that of Mr. j I'algrave, who wr.s fortunate in having for a companion and gui le Dr. Nich olls, a young inedicnl otlicer of the olony, and one of the origin.. d party ' of discovery. j The startling place, is lloseau, the ptineipal town of Ioininiea, on the . south coast. Hence yon ride up the valley on ponies to a hamlet I.oOO feet above the sea. Heyond this the work : is all on foot, first through the tmig- i liifieent scenery of the West Indian ; tropical forest, next amid tliorny and ' prickley n:nlei i'lisli, and then ii) and down tlie sides of gullies. Whert the j climbing is slippery ami rislV3', and in- : volves fantastic capers, calling forth, says Mr. I'algrave, an occasional Eng lish ejaculation, the same that IJynm ; declares to have no like for emphasis in art)' other langu ige. While moving thtough a lalnynth of tnall trees the travelers suddenly came upon a sheer precipice with so little warning that they jn-st escaped tumbling seveial i hundred feet down into the (Jrar.de; Soufriere which lay below This is a I half extinct crater, paved with soft ashes, and bubbling with innumerable i mineral springs of white, black, and red water, w hich mingle ami rush out . of ono side in a scalding hot torrent. I There is but little vegetation to cheer ' the demonical grandeur of this semi infernal hollow ;'' invst plants wither iti the fumes of the vapor.
