' They prepared a small square board, freighted with etoncs, and in the centre of it they , placed three lighted candles. Tbi they let down through the shaft, and by the light of the candle they saw distinctly that the inner sides of the shaft were emuoth and apparently ended in Bom? large apartmei.t. The offiocM of the Hungarian ' ministrr of the interior beg ?in tuCir investigation under, the ancient . law Thich makes all such discoveries the property of the croTn,and thsir report, as communicated to parliament, is still ; morestartling. Their researched clear ly establish it as a fact that this sub terranean structure wm undoubtedly au old Komaa castle, built many ctn- , turit s before the Hens and Magyars . .left their Asiatic homes to inrnlle'this part of Europe. This section of Hun gary was tfie province of I'annonia, of the Koman empire, and in the vicinity of Lake rJ-iloton there wss a large permanent 11 o man camp the agricul tural and military settlement of the lloinani extended for npny miles, and traces of this llomvi occr.p.ition. w hich continued down lo the sixth ccntniy of the Christian ers, h'.ve repeadiy lH?n found. But how this vast struc ture, Nvhich is said to cover two acres " and but two storirs high, with massive : walls of stone and brick, was covered , with earth to the depth of more than sixtv feet, over which a forest of heavy tirobcr had groTn up a .forest, too, that is mentioned as existing in the oldest, preserved chronicles of the kingdom the officers have so far found, is impossible to account for. In one room several skeletons of human bc- . lugs have been found, but the bones . were too much Ucayi'd lo indicate 1 with certainty the race to nhich they txlongcd. As h thorough seaich of this wondeiful building is now pro posed, further developments ma3 clear up thft mystery. The shaft through which the first discovery was made is believed to have been either a chimney " or an observatory or lookout, as iron hooks have been found fastened to the wall insideto which means of ascent and descent were probably attached. The Minister of the Interior has p-ked for a preliminary appropriation of one hnndred thousand l!oriL8 to make a more full rxaminMion, and also-de- minded authority to commence work at once, dtegins; out tbc .whole e?rth now burvirW the place and thus bring ing to the eyes of the nineteenth cen tnry evidence of Roinin provincial life, hidden from the light of day possibly for fifteen centuries. On this occasion many -of the French otlScers and patriotic Newporters were present.' Mr. Ellerj'' was a' widower, and bis daughter, Miss' Betsy tilery, tben a yonnp girl of sixteen or seven teen, who subsequently married Sam uel Vernon, an eminent Newport mer chant, presided at th tea table in question and poured out tea to her patriotic guests. Miss. Elkry was at the time sutTerirt from a severe w)re throat, and rt nM not speak a'oove a wEisper. General Washington observ ingthis embaiTassment of his youthful hostess, said'' to hen "Miss Eliery you seem to be sutTcring very much.; What is the matter?" . Misa Eliery told bini the canse of her trouble, upon which the General said to her: "I suffer mj'Self, very frequently, from a sore throat, and take a remedy which I find very useful, and which I would recommend to you,. were I not sure that yon would not take it." "But I am sure," replied Miss Eliery, "that I would take any remedy that General Washington would propose." "Well, then" said the General, Vit is this, 'onions boiled in molasses;' it has cured me often.',' Miss Ellerv took the remetly, and, of course, was cured. Pr&vidence. Jour nal. How to Diecovf.r Altered Wiut inos A discovery is announced by a French chemist to which recent events in this State give a special "interest here. Its value lies in its application to the' discovery of alteration? in writ ings that arc suspected of having been tampered with. The coloring matter of ordinary ink consists chiefly of a combination of tannic acid with oxide of iron. ?r. Gftbert has discovered that however skillfully any writing rnny have been erased, suflicfcnt trace of the iron oxide always remain to ap pear in a photographic -image, though they may be totally imisible to the eye on the oriental psper. He p.-e eented as an illustration a bond drawn for 105 francs, which had been altered to 5,000 franca and eo negotiated. The original paper bore no suspicions appearance and the closest ocular in spection failed to detect any trace of the figures that bad been erased. Hnt on a photograph of the same pp. per the figures were plainly diwrnible. min gled with and paitiy obscured by the latter finrca substituted for them. The light reflected from the surface once stained by. ink, though' indistin guishable by the eye, auecU the pho tographic msteiiU duTerently from thein that, reflected from the paper where the ink has not touched it. It is believed that a photograph w ill 1. ways fc-eltle the question whether1 a suspected paper Las been .'altered by erasure." Parimo Bir.us of Tret. Dr. W.d, in the American Naturalist, tells the following stories: "Our common gos hawk is the moat daring and ventur sorae of any of our diurnal birds of prey. A farmer who realties a few miles from. my office, wishing to per petuate the old New England enstom of having a chicken pie for Thanks giving dinner, canght Bomrrfrvrl, took them to a logsevered the neck ofor.e nnd threw it down beside him. In an instantagosbawk seized thestrugcling fowl, and, flying off some ten rods, alighted and commenced devouring his prey. The boldness of the attack so astonished the farmer that he looked ori with blank amazement. Recover, ing from his surprise he hastened Into the house and brought, ont hi gun, which secured himboth the hawk and the fowl. Another, instance of still greater daring occurred near a dwell ing Imuse ; the door being open the hen flew inside; the hawk followed, and seized her in the room occupied by an old gentleman and his daughter. lhe old man hastened to the rescue anil RtrucK the hawk with a cane be fore it released its grasp. The daugh ter caught the hawk as it attempted to fly out of the door, and killed it." Restoration of Paced Manc 6CRIFT. It often happens that the ink with which old records were written, upon either, paper or parchment, 1ms faded and rendered the characters ap parently undecipherable. It is well, therefore,, to know that such writings may1 easily lie rendered legible by moistening the paper with water and then passing over the lines in writing a brush w hich has been dipped in a solution of sulphide of, ammonium. The writing will immediately appear quite dark in olor,' and thls'color, in the case of parchment, it will preserve riecorus wmcn were treated in this war in the Germanic' Museum in Nnreni- berg, ten years ago, are still in the same - condition as immediately aRer the application of the proc-e-. On paper, however, the color eradnallv fades again ; but, it may be restored aarain at pleasure by the application of the sulphide. The explanation of the action of this sulphide is very sim ple; the iron which enters" into the composition of the ink is transformed by the reaction into the black sulphide. a i Foe Bcrws.
