m F&& EESL EE-iS. STRANG R MAT URAL ClaTERNS. In the rough granite country back ! from Moeaaroedes, on the vvcet coast of Africa, are some very retnar?Able nat ural cisterns. The eonnlrv itswlf ia pecnliar, huge single rtx-k rising ont j of the nearly levcljplain in Rome places, ! and in others hills of rook, in several of i which deposits of water ure found at ; the rery top. A recent traveler visit- ed one uf these, and describes it as a . natural tank with a narrow entrance, ! containing some three or four hundred j gallons of exquisitely clear and cool j water. It wan covered bv vast slabs i of granite, from which the rain drained into it during the rain? season, shading tue water so that it could not be seen without n torch, and bo protecting it j that the sun cannot evaporate it dur- i ing the dry season. Thus a bountiful j etore of excellent water is preserved while theie is not a drop to be had I elsewhere lor miles. ( A still more remarkable oifttern ofi this sort is that of the Pedra Grande, or Uig Stone, some thirty mile! from ilossamedes, a huge rounded mass of granite, rising out of the andy plain. On the smooth side ot thi rock, twenty or thirtj- feet above the plain, is a cir cular pit about ten feet deep and six feet across. The rainf.ill on the rock above Jihe pit drains ir:to it, filling it completely every rainy reason. The walls of the pit which is shaped like a crucible, narrowing gently to the bottom are perfectly smooth and regular, the enclosing granite being of the closes and hardest description. The cistern will hold several thomnnd gallons of water. Near by arc smaller pits of similar character. Their for mation is unexplained. Thy water of this strange well furnishes the natives and travelers with an abundant supply during the dry season ; consequently it is a noted halting place. A SPITTING S.VAKX. There is a dangerous siutke, net un common about BenjuelU, West Africa, j called by the natives naja nrje, and by the Portuguese cusprdira. It U small ' size and remarkable from ?ts habit of spitting wheu interfered with. The Riliva ia ejected to consider Able dis tances, and is said to cause blindness if it touches, the eyes. One of the enakes was captured by the natives and brought to where some English miners were at work. It was teased by a miner who was standing over the cage, which was on the ground, and retali ated by a discharge of spittle. Some ! of the liquid entered one of the miner's i eyes; and though the e-e was imme diately washed out with fwater, it was very much irritated for several days. The snake was killed before any ex periments could be made with it by the scientific superintendent of the mine ; he has, however, no doubt of the mi -ner's statement and that of his com panions, corroborated a it is by the testimony of the natives and the Por tuguese. A RIVER OP INK. In Algeria there is a river of genu ine iiik. It is formed by the union of two streams, one coming from a region of ferruginous soil, the other draining a peat swamp. The water of the for mer is strongly impregnated with iron, that of the latter with gallic acid. IVten the two waters mhijje the acid of the one unites with the iron of the other, forming a true ink. We are familiar with a stream called Black Urook, in th northern part of this State, the inky color of whose water is evidently due to like conditions. Scientific American. Many housekeepers in the country know how difficult it is to obtain a good article of bar soap. Tue yellow soap sold at stores cuts soft as chccBe, and rubs away as easily, and unless the house wife orders a box of soap at a time, and piles it up in stacks in the attic or Home tlry place, the yearly record will show a good sum paid out for soap purchased by the bar. The following recipe will prove a desirable item of economy : Four large bars of yellow soap ; two pounds of sal soda ; three ounces bor ax ; one ounce liquid ammonia. Shave the soap in thin slices, put it into eight quarts of soft water (rain water is the best.) When the soap is nearly dissolved, add the borax and sal soda; stir till all is melted. Pour into a large tub or shallow pan ; when Hcarly cool add the ammonia slowly, mixing it well. Let it stand a day or two, then cut it into cake3 or bars, and dry in a warm place. No better soap can be m:.de to wash white clothes, calicoes and flannels, and it is excel lent for all household purposes. It costs but three cents per pound, nnd is made in less than half an hour. This recipe has been sold for five dollars, and will be of service to every family. Ilcarih and Home.
