When the year runs out, or a little before, they are on hand with the pay. There is no more difficulty with them in remerrbei ing this period than in remembering: Sun day or the first of January. If one of tliein wishes to stop hi- p:tM-r, he either Culls or writes by his postmaster in due season, like a man. This chts is dear to the heart of the editor. Their image is embalmed in hi- warm atrections. 11 ay they live a thousand years, and fcee theii sons' sons of the fourth gen eration. The second class now in mind is the Io Wells. This class is nearly related to the other so near that it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. These men always pa in advance in the beginning, and in tend to do so continually. iut mem ory fails a little, or some mishap inter venes, and the lime runs by sometimes a little, sometimes quite a period. lut their recollection, though nodding oc casionally, never gets sound asleep. This Automaton had to be repaired by Hondin, who afterwards repaired other a u t o m ata, n a m el y : Va u ca 11 son 's d uc k, and the Componium, a mechanical or chestra, which could play operatic ov ertures with precision and effect, and could improvise variations without re IK'atinj; itself. It was exhibited by a Prussian, named Koppen, in Paris, about 1829, and brought him in a con siderable Him, after which he sold it. The automata made and exhibited hy Iloudin were four in nurr.lor. One was a pastry-cook that issued from a door at the word of command, bring ing various refreshments, according to the request of the spectators. At the side of the shop, assistant pastry-cooks were seen rolling paste and putting it in the oven. Another of Houdin's automata was sn imitation of the two clowns Auriol and De IJurcau. The latter held out a chair at arm's length, on which his comrade performed acrobatic tricks like his namesake in the circus at the Champs-KIysces. Afterward Amiol smoked a pipe, and j accompanied with the flageolet an air : played by the orchestra. Since IIou- din's time, other tumbling figures have j been exhibited. The earlier of these, j called the Automaton Leotard, wns 1 constructed by Prof. Pepper. It tumbled and postured on a swinging trapeze. It was patented, and the me chanism is fully described in the spe cification. A conjuror named Ileau mont improved upon this by making a large doll vault upon a swinging rope, and, after holding by its hands, disen gaging them from the rope viLliont assistance, and then l.aag by its feet. A third mechanical contrivance of Iloudin's was the mysto-ious orange tree, on which flowers and fruit seemed to grow at the request of the ladies. This was also used as pait of a conju ring trick, a borrowed handkerchief being discovered in one of the orances, which opened, when two butterflies took it by the corners and unfolded it. The electrical dial trick of Iloudin may also be classed as automatic, it lieing intended that the spectators should believe it to be isolated. A dial of transparent glass was hung up in the I theatre, and while suspended it would ! mark any hour desired by the audience, and would sliike t he time on a crytrd bell suspended with the dial. I'.L W'osDEr.rri, Natural Provision. In the struggle foi life which is go ing on perpetn-dly throughout the whole of the animal citation, it is in teresting to observe the wonderful pro visions which Nature makes for the preservation of the 'veaker and more helpless animals. The color of the creature is often adapted in a wonder ful w ay to its mode of living and place of concealment, and contributes verv materially to its safety. We know lion ditliciiit it, is to distinguish the grasshopper from the leaf or Ll-ide where he is re -ting, till lie betrays himself by moving. The birds that sing in the hedge rows have colors on their backs which harmonize with the elr of the leaves about which thev flit, while the feathers on their breasts borrow the white hue of the clouds nlove them. Thejtarti iilge can hardly 1e distinguished from the stubble where it makes its nest, while in northern countries the winter dress of the hare and ptarmigan is while like the snow among which thev are seen. The same is the case with the inhabitants of the water. The frogs which live in the pool or muddy ditches. aie known to vary their color according to the na lure of the Hand or mu l among which they ."live. The tree-frog, on the other hand, i rrreen, and tlnn is with ditli eultv distinguished from the trees to which it adheres. I-'ish, especially those which inhibit fresh water, are so like in eolor to the weeds and stones among which they lie, that it is often very difficult to detect their presence. One of the most wonderful instances of Nature's care in providing for the protection of the more defenceless creatures is found in the apparatus for defence with which the cuttle-fish is furnished. As soon as its quick eyes catch a glimpse of an approaching enemy, knowing the impossibility of saving itself by flight, it prepares at once to seek safety in Concealment. With this object it sinks downwards, and throws out from a vessel witli which it is provided a black stream of inky fluid. This entirely surrounds nnd conceals it, and as it takes a con siderable time to disperse, the enemy is generally baffled ; if, however, the cuttle-fish is still in danger, it pours out another flood of ink, and remains quiet until the peril is past. 27ie Young Crusader. I.v Chester county, Pa., roads are in chaige of township oflicers, who arc hell responsible for their condition. Kvery three yeais tliey are divided i.ilo short sections of not more than half a mile, and sold at public auction to the lowest bidder, who is bound by a writ ten contract; the only reservation made being that the purchaser raii9t be a citizen of tlie township and must sign the contract. Legal decisions have fixed that the. public have, no right bej-ond that of passing over the road in the ordinary course of travel, and that the right to all grass, fruit or minerals, remains with the owners of the farm from which the land was taken. The township supervisors have unlimited control as to earth needed for repairs, nnd there is no appeal from their command. Country Gentleman. jS EXT DOOR TOPOST-OF I' ICE.
