Almost every one at all conversant with the topics the hour have read and heard repeatedly of the Gladstone-Manning con troversy. In .his age of ours we are too much occupied with th afl'aiisof the pres ent to consult the old. musty tomes of the past. Hence we ore oflcn misinformed and misled by biased and prejudiced writers. Especially is this the case regarding matters that do not intinrately concern us. Probably nothing has occurred in this cen tury that bar occupied the miuv's of men of all nations to such a vast extent s that of Ihe Vatican Council and its Pecrefs ; and no quest ion, we venture to say, has been sub jected to such a variety of interpretations. Our position not being that of a reviewer", we toox little heed to the controversy ; be ;Ao. - flr.,.i s .1,;. ,,r o.. o ,.o "... i iioiiiimni iiuiiic uy uiiuics i7ii uny nmyvo. which do not concern ns either personally or locally. For all thai, however, we must say that we were exceedingly gratified to lie made the recipient, thanks to the publishers, of the three pamphlets aliove named, as well as Mr. Gladstone's severe "Expostulations on the Vatican Decrees." Now at least we shall have a fair and impartial statement of bo:h sides, was our first, thought. Mr. Gladstone ha long been looked upon as one of the most upright and liberal-mind ed of men, and Archbishop Manning (a con- Vert from Anglicanism) is justly acknovvl- edgPd l to be . , of the deppest thinkers and J most thorough theologians of the day. And who has not heard of the illustrious and venerabtTTFather Newman, who stands with- ,.., n , .. ;r . t the linglish languare? Mr. (iladstone puts forth the popular nlv jpctions now in vogue against Papal IiifaKi ty in a terse and vigorous form, but we are inclined to think he would have produced a stronger impression it lie had written with less bitterness. Tb replies of Drs. Man ning and Newman (that of Dr. Manning be ing the more direct ) are calm, clear and dig nified productions, written in a style so straightforward, manly aud absorbing, and meeting so squarely and answering so fully every objection put forward, that one who commences the perusal of either of these pamphlets cannot, without an effort refrain from completing the pleasant task at the first sitting. AVe ad vise thnp of our readers who have given any attention to the subject to read both sides, and especially do we com- .... .... "" mend the rrusal of the replies of Dts. Man- ning and Newman to those who have read I Mr. Gladstone's remarkalile pamphlet. I Dr. Fessler in his "True and False Infal libility of tha T'opes" tells very plainly what was really defined at the Vatican Council, and Protestant and Catholic alike cannot fail to learn very much which thfy nvcr knew in regard to Papal Infallibility from this valuable little work. At least such has licen our cxp'rience, impressed as we were !ef.ir refliliiirr it. u-itli IIim i.li.fi tlmt tf'ntlirt- lies were required to lielieve far more on this subject than is rea'lv demanded of them hem. Dr Newman makes the announcement that his "letter to the Duke of Norfolk" is probably his last, publication, but we agree with a contemporary that, "if one may Judge in any degree of the vitality that is left in a man bv tbe grasp of his thought, the lucid ity of his exposition, Ihe imaginative ease of his illits'rations, atid the accuracy of his memory, there is no sign as yet of the end of Ir. Newman's career." In conclusion, we cannot, but express as enr candid opinion that Mr. Gladstone has un vi t linily dune a great service totkeCatb wlic Churr h, inasmuch :ia he has called fort h these two matchless replies, whereby hun dreds of Inmost, fair-minded tuen ontside that communion have l-'eti made to see things in a different, light from thai in which they have heretofore viewed them. Persons wishing to proeure eifli'-r or all the pamph lets referred to should address, enclosing tbe price, the Catholic Publication Co., as above, or Juo. J. Murphy, 13'o Grant St., Pittsburgh.
