Beef tea, soup, or milk should be taken frequently, and in as large quantities as the stomach will bear and digest without danger of causing disgust 01 nausea. If stimulants are required, and they are generally wanted early and abundantlj. milk punch is tbe best ; but it should al- . 1 :.u 41 ... r - .. If milk punch becomes distasteful, bar Icy water, rice water, arrow root, etc., may be used as a bland vehicle for administer ing stimulants. Then of jail the remedies that a long ex perience (over thirty years) has proved em inently reliable, chlorate of potash is the best ; but it should be given in one way only, and also thoroughly. It should be given dry upon tho tongue, pure, not mixed with sugar, and not in solution. IJy giv ing it in this way, it dissolves slovly in the mouth, and gradually and efficiently comes in contact with all the diseased parts of the throat. It is slightly disagreeable at first, hut the youngest child soon becomes accustomed lo it. It takes away the supposed neces Bity for forced local applications to the throat, and if the little patient lo taught to open its mouth widely, without strain ing, and to draw in its breath dteply at the Kama time, the curtain of the palate will be drawi up, and the whole back pail of the throat, down to the windpipe, w ill be exposed to view, without the uso of any harsher means to obtaiu a view of the parts involved by the disorder. This treatment must be persisted in, tho chlorate of potash to ba given in doses of two, three, fivo or more grains every hour at first, until some decided improvement commences, r for one, two, three, or even more davs, without hesitation or faltering. Often no apparent improvement seems to take place for one, tw, or more days; sometimes not until nearly up to the fourth day. Bat courage and perseverance will almost certainly be rewarded with success; certainly four or five ti'uos out of six. This treatment is considerate, but effi cient ; the child never becomes afraid of Lis physician or attendants, and generally, with a little management, takes or does all that is required of it, because its handling is gentle, or at least not harsh or distress ing. If the debility bo very great, muriatic tincture of iron may be required. If the mouth be dry, glycerine may bo put into it frequently. It may be true that among the most des titute, filthiest and careless classes the be ginning of diptheria may be the beginning f death, but I am very sure that a vast number of lives can be saved by the treat ment above indicated. Nails is Fri-it Treks. A singular fact, and one worthy to be recorded, was mentioned to us a few days since by Mr. Alexander Drake, of Albemarle. lie sta ted that whilst on a visit to a neighbor his attention was called to a large peach or chard, every tree of which was totally de stroyed by tha ravages of the worm, with the exception of three, and these were the most thrifty and flourishing peach trees he ever saw. The only cause of their superi ority known t his host was an experiment made in consequence of observing that those parts of worm-eaten timber into which nail had baen driven were general ly sound. When his trees were about a year old, ho had selected three of them and driven a tenpenny nail through the body, as near the ground as possible. Whilt-t tho balance of tho orchard had gradually failed, and Cnallyyiolded; to the worms, these three trees, selected at random, treat ed precisely in the same manner w ith the exception of the nailing, had always been vigorous and healthy, furnishing him at that very period w ith the greatest profu sion of the most luscious fruit. It is sun- posed thit the salt of iron furnished by the nail is offensive to the worm, whilst it is harmless, or perhaps beneficiaf, to the tree. A chemical writer ou this subject says : 'The oxidation or rustiug of the iron by the sap evolves ammonia, which, as tho sap ric.es, will of course impregnate every pait of the foliage and prove too severe a dose for the delicr.te palate f intruding in sects." This writer recommends driving half a dozen nails into the trunk. Several experiment of the kind have resulted suc cessfully. i-o u fucrn Pin n tcr.
