The Artless Fair One. A ict'uni.i-d man speaks eloquently in behalf of his unprotected susceptibilities: There Is n certain style of woman vho nl fovt.s the ni st innocent simplicity on ques tions to which every one pas: first childhood ean cive an nnswer ; whose eue is rwirt: ig iioranee, whose charm i- her unenlighten i.ient. b!ie absolutely makes a boast of her i;novaneu; the tone in v, hieii she sayu, 'Oh! yon re to clover f .r poor little me tl ttilk to ; nml 1 dare say yon nre riht ; but then I am such a little o..se I do not understand you," is quite su'Iieieiit to an nihilate you for the evening, if you chance to Le of those unlucky ones who are sensi tive as to the iinpres.-i..n they make, fsie, so si r.ple, s,i untutored, the child of nature, makes it plain t i you that .ti have gone on a wrong road when you have spr.ken to her p.s to a reasonable, deivnt education, and have , . , i , OSS-aml that she posfs.-es a mm-1 and SOllli? d'-ree of instruction. The naen or Iho Sandwich Islands. The new Queen of the Sandwich Islands, fays a letter-writer, is a, rry utti active one, I think. I can't say M;i,t kind of a sensa tion she would create in p. ist.,n literary society, but to one nei'ustouu-d to Hawaiian features and ilusky skins she makes a v i j plea.sing pictare. She is about thirty-fuc years of ng-', a little alwwe the av.ra-e 1. eight, p--r:ly in p; i n, and carries herself with a queenly dignity becoming her station which dignity is entirely rntural to her, a? it is to most of the Hawaiian women. Slu speak so little English that she docs not trust bcr.-eif to use this lang-tPiro in Com pany, so Conversation is somewhat tllfucult ; but her bri,nt. pleased, intellit-eiit exi-res-sion makes up tor a .reat deal ht Lad a reception of the ladies of 1 (..mobile at the palace a few weeks ago. and her man ners were worthy of any lady in the land. hile her dress was simplicity itself, but rich enough to suit her rank. In Lor younger days she wa niirv to the son of tht present queen downg.-r. and was said lo 1 Tery Itautiful. It was then thought that Kalakaua l.werej himself somewhat in inarrying one U-iow hiui in rank, but to my mind it wa.s a eiy creditable thing, if he loved Ler, and I ,estr( t him nil the more for it. I saw their Majesties lately nt n grand party given on boaid ti; Rcnei ia, and on that occasion she looked a Queen of whom her liusbaad might be pioad. mEHTIOH, ' FARHERS 1 1 Tf r if .vt.-.s me pleasure to Inform yon that X as-nn L live tlio BiteiK-v Ihisetnnn fur tlm - TA'0 , - ' sMowli ani Reapi IACH1ES ever bruin-lit before tlio public, r7T.rj G1TTT17,T? DLsereiion is the greater part of valor in every other matter stive dross ; but in this one particular they deny any authority, and recognize no iover but that of downright penury. What tires a woman's soul is not what she has not, so much as it L- what her neigh bor has. So many female fashions are en tirely needless that nothing but rivalry could ever bring them before the public. It is not that the Japanese e.m-shades are pop- i ular or pretty that women are induced to buy them, but because some other woman flaunts one. Each woman is but the eelw of the other, m far as dresss is concerned, and what one docs or has by reason of her superabundance of money- the others must nr,.l w ill do and have by the exercise of in genuity, contrivance and planning. And were the secrets of households made lmre, more than half the anxiety of the inmates, and all the premature Wrinkles in the faces of women would be found to have originated in disappointment in dress. Not that they have not had enoHgh to wear, but that they cou'.d not ovcr-ssiiadow others in their ele gance of attire. So long as dress is the criterion by which a woman is judged, and by which all ars measured, the rivalry will go on, and the excess of money, time aud health be devoted to fashion. This season the variety of goods offered makes it possible for woman to be more in dividual in taste than heretofore, and in trimmings particularly, unless they are pledged to embroidery: Any amount of taste and ingenuity may be displayed in "finishing ofT" dresses, and where the com bination of two or more kinds of goods is not essential, the flowers and puffs and folds are by no means an impossible performance for even the most uninformed amateur. Fashion. The absurdities of fashion are rot new ex cept in one particular : they nre almost com pletely confined to the ladies. "With the present dress of the gentlemen little fault can le found ; but with that of the ladies ! A Veil, let u.s be merciful in judgment ; if our fair sisters delight in waists of eighteen inches in circumference; in trains of un known length which convey with them all manner of street refuse lot them enjoy perfect liberty of action far he it from us to tyrannize! Folly was not born with the present century. One is very apt to rail agv.inst the absurdities of present fashion, and as each new mode appears, to vow that taste is on the wane, and Paris the Temple of the Graces no longer. Yet a glance at the costumes of the past will show ns that extravagance is no novelty; contemporaries of Alcibiadcs dressed their heads in the rae t intricate manner, rouged their cheeks, nnd wore precious stones on their sandals. The shoes with points chained to the knees and the lofty sugar-loafed head-dress of the middle ag.x, were facts ns monstrous as Queen Eiizaheth's ruff and iron-bound cor set, or the figurative cmjfvre of Marie An toinette, with the gallant ship of the town of Paris in full sail upon the summit. Nur were the fashions of the first half of thir, century devoid of exaggeration ; look at our grandmother's bonnet, with wide-spreading brim and feathers waving on end! Our thajxetur are of strange shapes, high in tlie crown, nnd of many colors mixed togeuier, but there is a unity about them they adorn the head instead of turning it into a scare crow. Even when we lwrrow from the past we do not b irrow crudely, but with discre tion, moulding old fashions to new forms. So fashion improves as she adances. True rolitcnoss Have lonr Heart In the night riace. One cannot be polite and well-mannered without kind feelings and a good heart. All the rules for etiquette, all the hand-books and "Guides to Society" in the world are worthless, if you have nothing within your soul which tenches you to do uno others as you would have them do unto you. You may learn to bow and to .-diake hands according to the liest rules of deportment ; you may pay calls at exactly tho right time, and understand the corners of your vr-iting cards thoroughly; but if you have spite in your heart, and envy in your soul, you will never be truly well-mannered. If you desire to boast, to lie conspicuous, to monopolize attention, to hurt the feelings of innocent people, and to sow disscntion between friends, you cannot make a lady or a gentleman of yourself by any number of airs and graces. If you are kind ard good, and wish peo ple well, and prefci to say pleasant things when you can, you will le polite without trying to be, and only silly people will criti cise any hearty form of welcome, any effort to make them comfortable, that may occur. Of course you may learn much by observa tion and by associating with cultivated peo ple; but true politeness can never be learnt by one whose heart ii not in the right place. "Why blame mamma if she wishes her daughter to make a "good match ?" Is it not a-s easy to love a worthy rich man as it is to worship a worthy poor man? To be sure it is ! And madam knowa this very well. In her eyes a poverty-stricken youth is necessarily the enemy of nil maidens whose fathers live at the rate of some thou sands per annum. She may have married a man having prospects, but no position ; but that is no reason why her darling child should have done so. Love in a cottage may le all very well ; and perhaps, at one time, she considered it the height of human bliss. Eat age brings knowledge and expe rience ; and what in the hey -day of youth appears pare gold, is, in middle age, very often discovered to be trawdry tinsel. lie sides, though her husband has turned out trumps, it by no means follows that if she confided her daughter to a man occupying a similar position to that in which her partner commenced life, he will ever rise above it. So she prefers like the prudent soul that she is, to be on the safe side. Thus she fixes her attention upon men who have already made a .mine and position, and prepares her traps for lioth him and her daughter to fall into. Well it is for the daughter if the mother's plans succeed though she may not think so at the time. Hut then she is young. OT STORE BOLIllK. 113 A 1!j IT ew Embroideries NEW GLOVES AND HOSIERY.
