A Revolvtiosary Hei.tc. On the par lor table of Captain Win. Wilson Potter, of Bellefonte, may be seen any day for asking, no less a relic thau the flag of the Koyal Grenadiers, captured on the field of Mon mouth by his (maternal) grandfather, the late J udge Wm. Wilson, of Chilquaqua Mill, .Northumberland county. Pa. The grouud or main surface is lemon, or light yellow, heavy corded silk; five feet four inches by four feet eight; corresponding in proportions with the Hag of the Seventh Itegiment, surrendered among others by Cornwall!, at Y'orktown, and presented by order of Congress to Gen. Washington, late ly in the Museum at Alexandria, Virginia, but eight inches less in size; the latter being six feet long and fire feet four inches wide. The device at the upper right corner is that of the English Union, which distinguished the Jtvyal standard of Great Britain. It is oomjHjsed of the Cross of St. George, todenote England, and St. Andrew'sCrossin the form of an X to denote Scotland ; this device was placed on the corner of the royal flag, after the accession of James the Sixth of boot land to the throne of England as James First. The field of the devii;e is blue, the central stripes (Cross of St. George) red, the mar ginal ones white. It wants the Crown and Garter and full blown rose in the centre, of the Alexandria flag. The flag has the appearance of having been wrenched from the staff and lias a few old dust marks on tLe device; otherwise it looks as bright ami new as if it had just come from the gentle fingers that made it, although ninety-four years have rolled away since its golden folds drooped in the sultry air of that June-day battle. Krise, of St. Augustine, recently employed a man named John Haney to take care of several head of horses of which the loctor is the happy possessor, and ou Thursday morning of last week Haney went on duty. In tho after noon of the same day, however, the new employe expressed a desire to go after his clothes, which he said he had left with his former employer living a few miles distant in the direction of White township, and asked the loan of one of the Doctor's horses to speed him on his journey, promising to return tho same evening. This request was very generously granted, and with a bright bay mare, proerly saddled and bridled, Haney started for his alleged destination, Thursday evening came in due course of time, but Haney didn't; Friday passed by, and still 110 Haney ; Saturday morning daw tied without witnessing the return of tho absent one. and with its dawn came the conviction to the Doctor's mind that his horse had been stolen, but too ill himself to go in pursuit, he engaged the services of another party for that purpose, and the lat ter traced the thief and horse as far as Wap sanouick, w here he learned that Haney had exchanged the halter strap for a drink of liquor, but whither he went from there re mains as yet a mystery. The Ioctor, how ever, took the train for Williamsport on Tuesday evening, of which place Haney is said to have been a resident, and may possi bly overhaul the thief and his booty. Cherry Tree, Pa., Nov. 6, 1872. friend Mcl'ike During the past week quite a number of incidents have transpired, Bomeof them very pleasaut in their charac ter. On lost Thursday several friend's of the Baptist minister, liev. J. J. Davis, gave that gentleman a surprise donation party at his residence. Much praise is due the laxly man agers who arranged the entire programme and carried it through so successfully. Ac cording to previous arrangement the minis ter Jand family were invited out to dinner, and while absent the house was taken os session by those participating in the affair. From ten o'clock until noon the arrivals were frequent, each one bringing with them not only gome dainty preparation for the table, but "something nice for the minister." Groceries, dry goods, clothing, fancy arti-' cles and provisions of all kinds found their j w-ay to his store room. By twelve o clock the table wasspread with a bountiful supply of the delicacies of the season and the min ister sent for. You may imagine the sur prise depicted in his countenance, Mr. Edi tor, upon his arrival home to find his house occupied in such a wholesale manner. He w-as allowed no time, however, to express his amazement, but was conducted to the head of the table, where, after a blessing having been asked, his wonder and aston ishment were increased by finding beneath his plate the snug little sum of seventy-four dollars. After all had partaken of a hearty repast, they assembled iu the sitting room and were addressed by the Key. S. F. Crow ther in a few pertinent and very appropriate remarks. The friends immediately after this quietly took their departure, leaving the minister and his happy family to n-ioiee over their bountiful supply of presents and the spirit of friendship manifested so agree ably by their neighbors toward themselves. On last Monday afternoon we had a very pleasant Sabbath School union. The Pres byterian S. S. and United Brothren S. S. of this place met in the Presbyterian church for the purpose of partakingof some refresh ments. An abundance of the good things of life in the shape of cakes, pies, apples and confectionaries were provided, and judging j from the looks of the children on that occa- ! sion we should say they appreciated the treat, the loys especially, of whom we over heard a spectator remark, "Those boys are hollow clear down to the boots." Before and after the refreshmeuts were served we were treated to something more substantial in the shape of remarks by friends of the schools and singing by the schools themselves. In this manner two hours passed very quickly and pleasantly away. Many persons wero present 011 tioth occasions mentioned, the pleasant recollections of which will no doubt linger in their memories for many years to come. Our common schools opened for the win ter sessions last Monday with a large attend ance. Our music class for the winter, un der the instruction of Miss Kate F. Moore, began the same day. Ex-Sheriff Harter, of this place, and Jos. B. Cruse, Esq., of Huntingdon, are aliout entering into the mercantile business at Cook port, six miles west of this place. Success attend them. The election yesterday passed off very quietly giving Greeley a majority of seven iu this place. There has been eighteen votes less polled this election than at th State election four weeks ago. Cannot explain. Dr. A. K. Lovelace and the ex-Sheriff were prevented from voting yesterday 011 account of having bet upou the result of the election previous to voting. Yesterday I, in company with a friend, paid a visit to the log camp ou the Boliert McKaige property. The camp is situated about one-half mile from the liorough line, and located as it is the hea t f a dense wood, affords a striking contrast to its surroundings. The main building is sixty feet long by twenty wide, oue story in height, and is built of round logs and covered with shingles. The quarters of the men are very comforta ble. One-third of the building has been ar ranged as a Bleeping apartment, being fit ted up with two rows of bunksoue alnjve the other, well supplied with bedding, and each bunk capable of accomodating two men. A stove placed in the centre of this room makes it quite warm and pleasant, even in the coldest weather. J. he remaining two thirds of the building is used as a kitchen and dining room and is well arranged and withal very comfortable. In addition to the main building, there are several others, in cluding stable, granery and ofHc, the whole presenting an appearance of life seldom found in a forest. There are at present twenty-nine men on this job and were I not already trespassing upon your time and space would give you a brief sketch of the manner in which these men are divided in order to accomplish the greatest possible amount of work in the least possible space of time, nut shall defer until some future period when local items are not so abundant. There is a good deal of quiet humor in the dialogue, and the characters are fresh and natural, while the style of the descriptive passages, it need scarcely be said, is fluent and fascinating. Much of the effect of Dr. Holland's writing is to be at tributed to the ease and grace of the compo sition. The Philipsburg Journal tells the dole ful story of a Swiss, a man of culture, whose wife recently became hopelessly insane, leaving him with four small children on his hands. Unable to find any one to take care of the children while he went to his dr.ily work, he left his home at Y'oungstown, Ohio, and walked almost to Pittsburg, from whence he was sent by rail to Klajusburg, where he expected to find a sister with whom he desired to leave his little ones. She, he discovered, had removed to Lock Haven, and thereupon he started on another weary tramp. The people of Philipsburg pitied his misfortunes and raised enough money to pay his fare to Lock Haven. The IIokse Disk Asr. If J'the prevailing dis ease among horses is as bard on the animals as the several names given ltareto6pell and un derstand when tbev are spclt.il is as much a wonder to us that any of the afflicted brutes ever get over the first Attack as it would be ir any sensible person in this vicinity should go elsewhere fian to C. The man who don t know enough to buy from Cham, must be af flicted with something worse than the epizKtic. One noticeable feature about the great Bos ton fire was the immense destruction of wool with which so many of the stores destroyed were packed to their utmost capacity. Sogreat a loss of the raw material cannot but enhance the value of woolen goods, and the Inference to be drawn from this fact ii that tbe stHiiier peo ple buy their winter supplies of flannels and other woolen fabrics the less they will have to pay for them. V, S. Barker haa a complete as sor'mentof woolen goods and made-up clotn ing unaffected in price by the Boston ffre, aud no is the time to buy them. DinnHti.T Prettv. In an article last week, in our local columns, in which we undertook to state Greeley's loss, in certain election districts which we named, on the vote for Ruckalew in October, the deficiency in Washington township was inadvertently stated as having been 172, instead of 79, as appears from the official vote. This, to lie pure, was large enough, but only a little more than halj as much as our article made it.
