It is not known how tin; tire originated, but as the men had stopped work on Saturday al-ut noon, it fieems ini- 1 possible for the fire to have been accidental. There is a watihman in the mill, but when the lire was discovered it is said he was not ; about. The roofwas as dry as tinder in the under side, and the flames s;rt unl rapidly. The engines, boilers, puildliue; jii.d beatiny; furnaces, it is ; thoiiebt, are not injured. Neither are the : runs, j.ut it wui TaKe irom two weeks to a mouth to prepare the mill for rolling rails. More than two thousand hands were at work on Monday morninjrclearinsraway tin I'cbris ami takir, apart the machinery for examination. The mass of slat that fills the mill is immense. There are m-at ten acres of rubbish to clear away. The steel mill is safe, but steel rails cannot be made for want of rolls and steam. The steel rails were rolled in the iron rolling mill 1 1 is fifteen yearssince this mill was burned dow n Ik-fore, hoth limes on Saturday nijlit. The next roof will most probably be ali iron and siati-, which will render it fire-proof. The wild Jd water saved what was pre served from destruction. The engines and hose were on the ground and the firemen worked hard till ten o'clock next day to keep the tire sulnlued. The loss in time, machin ery and buildings will be half a million. This is partly insured. The great loss w ill be in time, as it will be a month before the mill tan be pl.t in runuingoidi-r. The oper atives, how ever, will not lose much time. All will find employment. D. J. Morrell is a w hole-soulcd man, and lias a heart full of sympathy for the poor, and be will give em ployment to all w ho w ill accept work. This great loss has cast a temporary gloom over the entire place, but our people need not be discouraged. The mill, after the oth.-r lire, fifteen years ago, was put in run ning order in one luoulit. 'What Las been don.- can Vie ti me. The spectacle of this tire in the darkness and gloom of night was simply indescriba ble. A sea on tile could not be more sub lime. ALIOOSA, Oct. 16, 1S72. Frit-r.d i'cPile To say that the results of tlm late election are depressing upon those who advocated the choice of the Reform candidates, would be to barely express the ai l ual state of atlairs in that quarter. Dem ocrats, are loud in their demand to know where the "Lil-eral Republicans" may bo found ; and many a sturdy old advocate of "State Rights" has publicly, within the last day or so, expressed the opinion that in stem 1 of being "liberal," Republicans are by all odds the most illibtrul of men. "Well, I know of one "Liberal Republican," at least, w ho though loud in denunciation of otHcial malfeasance nevertheless bowed down on election day to the demand of Simon. "Simon says down" ami down they went. All's well that ends well. The change is upon us. The green leaves are lip-.n the boughs no longer and the gold en, and the brown, and the parti-colored gems of autumn stud the branches that were otherwise bare and cheerless. Ah, me ! The fall of the year ! It is a sad, yet beautiful season ! How the heart gathers emotions of the past, when we look about us ainl see the quivering beauties drop one by one to the ground. 'I ,i this glad f.cason. while bis sweetest beams 1 in- sun shells iquul o'er the ineekeiied la. ," and men rejoice at the bountiful goodness of tiod, there steals a "eormless, gray confusion "over all," and ere the first bla:-tof winter's trumpet is heard yve are w rapped in his em brace. "S.-e, Winter comes, to rule the varied year, Siiiii.-ii and sad. w ith all hi rising train Vapors, and cloud, and storms." The improvements being made in Altoona, at this time, are numerous. I ought, per haps, to say that some of them were begun rather bite in the season, and the rapidly approaching winter w ill, 1 fear, necessitate a cessation of work, at least on the streets. The First Ward sewer is going ahead, but it is evident it cannot be completed this fall, so that Ninth street and streets adjoining will be in a bad condition all winter. The Twelfth street bridge ha lately eu joyed the labor of painters and carpenters, and jts appearance iu consequence is much in.proicd. If we may judge, by the character and liumlter of our si hools and school-houses, we must give ourselves credit for b-ing enterprising iu the administration of that most needful of life's perquisites a good education. In the Second Ward a free school edifice now peers above t he surround ing linn. lings, and ere long the "merry bell," will call from its spire for all w ho wish to come and enjoy the delights of learning. St. Mary's academy, attached to St. John's Cat holic church, is perhaps the most noticea ble feat nr.- in our edu ational department. It is filled almost lo overflowing with young la dies, kome from a distance, but mostly of our own city, who seek within its walls those principl -s of religious science which outside of institutions of this class are not of primary consideration. Ami here is the solution of this School problem. At least so it appears to your curiespoiulent. I see ris ing up in this land uumla-iless institutions of learning, all under the care of teachers selected by the proper authorities. These institution are thoroughly Christian. L,et all be collected within them and there edu cated who hold that the fret- school system is pernicious, not in itself, but iu its ten licuces. Thus' will the custom root itself in the soil of true education and the tree will blossom and bring forth fruit an hun dred fold. You can never break down thu free school system. You cannot e'en mater ially alter it, especially by a direct onslaught. You must undermine it and sup its support, else it w ill troic. Itiisin-ss iu police circles is, happily for us, almost at a stand still, and while ! am willing always to give credit to whom it is due, l assuredly will never write a history roimiieiidatory of the prowess of those he roes (I) who devote their time and atten tion (1) to the correction ami dissipation of wrong in the locality iu which your corres pondent, has a habitation. I attribute the lull in the criminal alendar to the exhaus tion felt by the, usually criminal consequent upon the herculean lal-ors performed in as sisting, to foist their associate upon us as a ruler. Eh ! Mr Stephen liiiekley, the gentleman who manages the affairs of the Adams 1-2 x press Company in this city, is by all odds the po litest and most accom.Mlauiig g.-nt of any note I have came in contact with for a long pace of period. I don't constitute myself a critic of men, remember, but you know some things are, aud other things are not, plain to t he eye. Mr. Harry Slepp, formerly foreman in the. Clod bless thorn bo;h, iay I. Wo had one inch of snow here to-day on a 'railroad track. I don't know where it came from, but I think our winters are se vere enough without, importing au addition al supply. . Truly thine, Pax. Cherby Tiu-E, Ia., Oct. 14, 1S72. Mr. Editor K.w that the election is over and all quiet along Ihe line, perhaps a tVw lo. al items may find room in your columns. Flection day, as usual iu Cherry Tree, passed otf very quietly. Our citizens long ago learned wisdom in this respect, and do not permit themselves to be carried away by political excitement. Itut enough of poli tics. I yvill turn to something more pleasant in its character and not quite so apt to cause con'eut inns. Our summer term of school closed last Thursday afternoon with public examina tions iu the school rooms. The closing ex ercises were well attended by the citizens of the place, and especially the parents of the pup. Is. The examinations rcliected credit on both tea. hers and scholars, and all things p issed off quietly aud pleasantly to all par ties concerned. In the evening the Cherry Tree Dollie Vanb-ii Glee Club and Cherry Tree Jimmy Vanb-n String Rand gave a free concert in tin- Presbyterian church of this place. To say it was. well attended would give but a faint idea of t Ik number present. The church was crowded literally packed pews, aisles, gallery and steps all full and oversowing. And 1 will say this, Mr. Fditor, never was lx-tter order kept iu an audience of that size before snd in no better way could their ap preciation ot the entertainment have lieeu expressed. Time and. space forbid me no ticing more than a tew of the performances. The Jimmy Varden Rami was rather demor alized by the non-appearance of its leader Mr. E,. II. Gardiner. The leadership was well represented, however, in the person of Mr. A. V. Ray, assist eil by Prof. A. M. Creery, both of whom are fust-class violin ists, ami Miss Kate F. Moore as Pianist, w hose music can only be heard to Im. appre ciated. The concert was opened by Prof. .1. W. Henderson with prayer, after which the Greeting Glee by the Clubntid Dolly Vardeti solo and chorus were saug with good eti'ect. The musical citf ertaiiiment was interspersed with a few literary gems, among which "Rum's Maniac" by K. II. Camp, and the "ltrid.il Feast," by Miss M. P.arr, deserves special notice. "Tennyson's Song of the ltrook," a solo, was sung by Miss Kate F. 3Ioore with spleudid effect, the. piano accom paniments being a world of music in itself. A quartette entitled "All Around is Hush ed," ami sung by Miss Kate F. Moore, Miss . M. F. Vail, II it. Kin port sand R. S. Lovelace,- was decidedly the gem of the eveiiing t?o far as quartettes were concerned. Sever al other pieces, among them "Rain upon the Roof," solo chorus, "Reautiful Hills," quartette, and "Mermaid's Evening Song," trio, deserve particular mention, but space forbids more. . The music class, through Mr. R. S. Lovelace in a neat and appropriate speech, presented their teacher, Miss Kate F. Moors, with, a apUudid volume f Lonfl- loyv's Poems. The gift, was entirely unex pected, but none the l.-ss nppv.-ci:t' d by th. recipient. At. the ilo.-e of ihe exercises a vote of thanks was tendered by the entire audience to the Glee Club aud St rim; Land for their entertainment. After tin' concert a few of the young terpischoreaTi diciples in dulged their fancy in "tripping tho light fantastic toe" for a few hours ere they re tired to their homes to dream over the pleas ant events of the evening. Our winter term of s. hool up. ns the first of next month for a session of five months with Mr. Jno. II. Hill and Miss K. McGeo as teachers. The logging business has finally became an institution with us, one cairm one-and-a-half miles above the Cherry Trie having over 700, UOO feet in the river already, ivlrl another party of the same firm are busily engaged cleaning out ('ush-Cuhit:g Creek", putting in log gates ahil lowering the sehttte of the Robt. McKoague dam, prepuMry to commencing operations on that stream. Ity next March we can expect to see the bosom of our river covered with a floating ma- s of round logs, which will nod.mbt seriously in terfere with the running of square timb-r. The weather for the past six weeks has been specially adopted to the wants of our farming friends, and large quantities of buck wheat, corn and potatoes have been safely stored away for future use. Th-- apple crop has been exceeding large and cider is a drug in the market. I'.
