Now, in view- of the fact that wcuso twice as much care and twice as much coid in doing up our packages for those places, aa we do for equal sized packages gent to much greater distances, we declare em phatically that the fault is not with us, but that it must be with some one of those who handle the mails between here and there. Be.-idts, the packages sent in that direction receive the same amonnt of attention each week, and if they can go throuigh safuiy once they can go through safely alf the timo, if the mail bags are handled with any decree of care. Henceforth we shall do more than enough to secure their safe transit, and if we hear any more complaints, we shall investigate tho matter and publish the name or names of those- who are at fault. Depend on this. Another thing; there are more complaints about the non-receipt of papers at the Loretto office than at all other post-offices combined. Aside from the facts stated above, there is no excuse for this preponderance, and we are sure we have not L-eenemiss in our duty to the lull extent complained of at least. So certain are we of this, that we aro willing to be qualified that one at least of the two papers said to have been missing last week was eent from this of fice, wherever It may have strayed to iu its fif teen mile journey via Cresson to Loretto. A Wi An Affecting Scene It is not often that a defunct cmine enjoys the privilege of being buried with the honors of war, but such was the extreme felicity enjoyed by one of tho epe cies, we believe of the feminine persuasion, in this place a few days ago. At least one of our most prominent citizens might have been seen and was seen with a lvfle on ono shoulder and the end of a long rope across the other, the ex treme end of the rope encircling the neck of a dead deg, while the prominent citizen afore said.like Sut Lover-good's father, was "playing hoss," and bewailinj as he went the diro ne cessity which had called for the Ehooting to death of Lis favorke purp. T he presence of tho rifle after the dog hsd been killed is ol course our reason for eunpoeing that the ani mal was interred with the honors of war, but be tbat as it may, certaiu it is that tho carcass was dragged by our friend to tho outskirts of town, where we presume, if buried at all, the undertaker turned up the Leoessary ''Real Es tate" w ith his own hands, and after taking a last affectionate "Gazette" the inanimate form before him, sadly consigned it to mother earth, whence no "bow-wow" of her species will ever awake her to glory again Thk Late Suicide in Pittsburgh. The almost fiuicitJal policy oi walking on the railroad tracks when such a course could be avoided, is becoming so frequent and bo prolific of fatal accidents, that it bohooves every lover of his species to raise his voice in warning against the dangerous practice. As the result of this in most cases inexcusable folly, we are called upon this wck to record another shocking and mstantaneous death. On Saturday night last an unmarried man named Wm Lit7-inger, while on his way home Irora Lilly's Station to Wilniore, and while opposite Dysert's coal mine, one and a half miles west of the former place, met a freight train goiog east, and stepping from the track to avoid it, got in the wav of the mail train west, tho engine of which struck him en I the back of the head and knocked him from the track, crushing in his skull and breaking one ol his legs, and otherwise mutilating his person. 1 he deceased tvas about 35 or 40 years of age, and was a brotner-in law of Mr. Lewi Rodgers, ol this place. The deceased was a lino looking woman, end, from herfrcneral appearance and tho lact that sho bad valuabie.-s and money about her to tho value of eighteen buudied dollars, had been well off at one time; while Clark, who, lie says, married the deceased but a year ajt, wus a poor bar-keceper in an inland town iu Scotland, and apparently a very iuiet and uncouth sort of individual. lark bad the body interred in St, ?farv's Catholic cemetery, mid this over he culled "on Coroner M" est to procure the ritec-ts and valu ables left by thr deeensed. The coroner imver once doubted that Clark was really the husband of tliodcud woman from the f not that tie p-iivo such a minute description of ail the effects found on tho deceased before ho had seen them, mid seemed so imieh affected when taken into the room whero the body lay. The coroner consequently prepared to band over tho cli'ects to him. On Friday, however, fhre different moil called upon Coroner West at his on'iec all with in the space of an hour and a half and each averred to tho coroner that tho female suicide was ifuwifo. One said lie was from Philadel phia, anol her Wan f i-om Younirstown. and tho third from Johnstown. Each described min utely every bit of weai-intf apparel und valua bles the deceased had about her person when found, und also described accurately the ap pca raiico of the dead woman. Kach one said that his wife was subject to temporary lits of iusanity, and ail these wives hud left home re cently. Lacli, of course, olainiod the valuables and elt'ects left by deceased. None of thriu volunteered to jrive their names, mid the coro ner iiyhtly took thcni to be iui posters, each of whom had thong-lit ho mirht pass himself off as the husband of deceased and thus procure the valuables without much trouble. After examining' the effects of deceased, each lift tho oliice. and none of them have been seen since. They probably found it a harder matter to procure the diamonds than they thought, and that explains the reason of their not're t'urning. Singular to say, however, oac-h one described the effects of deceased to perfection even telling how the cloak was bound, what kind of buttons were on it, the color oT the-hoop-skirt binding, and in fact every little de tail and all before any of them had been shown the articles by tho coroner. Notwithstanding he took these men to bo im postors, it suddenly struck Mr. West that be should place himself on his guard and not givo the valuables away rashly and without going through tho procesH prescribed b5" law for shouid he give them to Clark, and it would turn out afterwards that be was not the real hus band of tho woman, he (the coroner) would tie compelled to refund the value of the articles (some eighteen hundred dollars) to the right fill owner he genuine husband should he ever turn up. The coroner consulted with Judge Stowe on the matter, and his honor counseled him not to Ir-t the articles pass out of his hands except by the process proscribed by law, which was for the party claiming to bo the nearest kin to deceased to take out letters of adminis tration. On Friday afternoon Clark called ftt the cor oner's office to procure the valuables. Mr. West was sitting on n lounge with his child upon his knee. He informed Clark of tho ad- vie given him by Judge Stowe. and said that ho intended to act upon that, and told him that it would be better for him to takeout letters of administration at once. Clark, who, np to this time, had appeared to lie a very quiet, backward sort of fellow, at once sprang into a rage, and, it is said, called the coroner a liar und other hard names, accused him of artenipting to keep the valuables, and wound up b'y deal ing the coroner, Mr. Went, a powerful blow or. the face or neck. Thid was entirely too mu'. h even for the kind nature of the oue-Icgtrcd offi cial, and hastily sittinar down his cbtid, ho caught hold of his assailant, and by means of considerable physical power, tumbled him out of the window (which is in the s'.cond story) Clark abghting on the pavement Viclow. Stranice to say, he was not much hurt, and in a few mo ments returned up stairs fjuch calmed how ever. Clark began grumbling about hot getting the valuables, when the coroner told hini, if he was not sallsiied, to consult any lawyer on the sub ject. Clark th-n called upon Colonel Hayne, who informed hi In that Mr. West was perfectly light in what he proposed to do in tact that that was tho onlv way proscribed by law. Clark returned to the coroner's oiriee in e great rageaud Said he "believed that lawyer was in cahoot with him," (West.) llc'agaiu started out, and called upon J.Scott I'ei iruson, Ksq., lor advice. This gentleman told him exactly w out Col. lLiyne had told him. This only hud tho effect of making Clark more wratliy, and ho returned to the coroner in a terrible rage and said, "he believed that all the d d lawyers in town were in cahoot with him." Mr. West attempted to reason the matter with him, and offered to take him to auy of tho judges of tho court, and if they said to turn over the effects or oeceasea, men lie miuuiu have them. This bad no pacifying effect on Clark, however, and he left the office in a wild rage. It is said that he took the train that afternoon for tho east. He has not been seen since. Iiottersof administration have not yet been taken out, and it is the intention of tho coroner to not let tho effects of deceased pass from his hands without duo process of law. uTnr MuTtv- t." i thf title of a pretty little paper a oopv of which has been handed us by Valiio Barker. P., Aug. 5, 4ST1. Drar Freeman Two young men in this "neck o' timber" went on a courting expedition a few evenings ago, the objects or their loving atten tions being two very amiable pieces of calico not a thousand miles from where I write. One ol the young Iadie3 belongs to the house visited aud the other is a city visitor of the upper crust persuasion. Well, to the presence of these two handsome and interesting fair ones our heroes betook themselves on last Sunday evening, no doubt, felicitating themselves us they pursued their way on the glorious prospect of holding converse t.ith if not rubbing their corporeal corpuses up against quality, in due time they arrived at tho house, and after being ushered in with t-he usual greetings, took the chairs alot ted them and proceeded to unbosom themselves very eloquently about the weather, about tho nice harvest people were having, nnd about kindred topics, until the hour of ten by the clock had approached, When they were invited to remain ull night, a bed for that purpose be ing freely tendered them. Whet her they view ed tho iuvitation as a hint to leave is unknown to this deponent, but certain it is that they de clared their preference lor a moonlight walk home, and the Indies filing no objections, out into the night they went. In all this there was no harm of cour&e, so far as 1 can see1. Would that I could say as much for the rest of.. their adventures on that memorable night. Truth, however, compels me to bear testimony to the fact that these two young men pnssed through a gate in making their exit from the premises, and after having done SO, either nialielouJy or thoughtlessly permitted the aforesaid jate to remain open, thus leaving a clear passage for tho cows, feminine and masculine, to enter in and feast without hindrance on the farmer's growing corn, which they did to nn alarming extent. These two worthies did not do like the chap we read about in the l'rttman a couple of years ago, who, while on a like expedition, took occasion to tnrn out some horses that had 7iro hen into a farmer's corn-field. But they were doubtless ignorant of the fact that they had left the gate open and that tho cows by that means had got into the com, and you know that "where ignorauce is bliss 'twere folly to be wise." If reports be true, the tanner is going to sue the festive yonths for damages, but if he will take my advice he will let tho law alone, and instead avuil himself of the Urst- opiiortu nity that oilers to "dull their snoots." Heaver Dam Clipper- Johnstown Aug. 8, 1871. tear FreemanOn last Thursday night one or more burglars visited the dwelling house of Mr. David Dibert, in the fith ward, but left without doing much mischief. They wont from there to J. B. M'Creight'e, in the 2d ward, but were observed and left. From hero they retraced thoir steps to the eth ward, and after creeping through au open window in Mr. Beamish's res idence, ascended the stairs and plundered a bu reau drawer. The noise they tnade awakened Mrs. B., who thought it was her husband jirst returned from his work, and Piwke under that impression. This alarmed the burglars and they made a hasty retreat, while Mrs. B., equally alarmed, screamed us loudly as she could, ami iu this way aroused tho neighbors in the same house. The robbers, however, succeeded .in taking with them a silver watch and some small change. It wasnbout two o'clock in the morn ing when they left Beamish's. There is not the least doubt but whut a gang of tfiieves is now prowling around our town, roudy to make a de monstration at any time. The (iood Will Hook and Ladder Company had a splendid ball at Hansman's Hall on Mon day evening of iHst week: Tho young folks danced continuously from 0 p. in. to a. in., nnd all present enjoyed theinsdvos umazmgly.
