FiftH Avenue Cathedra!. A Detfriptiou oft!.o S lneM Jiurel. Krt ilice, kh tar a (oin jletvi, in the t'niloct SiKit. . The great lloruan Catholic Cathedral, cov ering the cnutie square between Fifih ami Maditon avenues and Fiftieth and Fiity first streets. New York city, is rearing it? vast proportions above the ground level with incre iped rajn.Iity. TLe entire square of the ground occupied by the edifice proper is oue and a half acres. The huge enterprise, commenced about five years ago, daring the lifetime of Archbishop Hughes, is now pro gressing towards completion as rapidly as circumstances will admit, under the direction of ArchhUhop McCiohkey. The time esti mated to fiuiah this work is about twenty years. jAt present considerably over one hundred men are employed in quarrying, Btne-cutting, masonry, and general labor. The marble used is quarried at Pieasantville, on the Harlem Railroad, and is bought on the premises by a special branch track. It is of the very best quality for building pur poses, being of fine, lar-zo crystals, of an even consistency and uniform color. Some of the blocks are very heavy, weighing from ten to fifteen tous each. The walls have now reached the height of fifty-four feet to the triforum, and are ready to receive the cornices and parapet. Next seasoa the columns for the clear story and the arches will be reared ; the entire front wall will also be completed. The transepts are now fiuished. The large gothic windows, eome twenty feet above the ground level, aro all finished, aud indicate the graudeur of the llood of. light that they will admit through gorgeuus tained glass. The mul lions, traceries, etc., arc all very delicately and beautifully wrought, but are not to be compared to the greater upper windows in the clear story yet to Lcjcrtcted. A ueagie idea of the stupendous wotk can be ."learned from theu items. The distance from the floor to the coiling is to be 110 feet. The edifice is cruciform in shape ; it is 185 feet wide at the transepts, and 330 fott in length. There will be two towers ar,d two tpires, each 2S0 feet high the ground length of tli3 building. The side walls are between three and four feet thick ; the tower walls between twelve and fjtirtecu feet thick; the-clear story walls are to he three fdet thick. Aboil! jOOO.OOi) have already been expended, and l!.5u0,000 will bo required for its completion. The graud central entrance on Fifth avcuue, late ly completed, is a marvel of stately beauty and architectural fiuUh. It is 70 feet in height, S3 feet in width, with opening doors 25 by 15 in dimensions. Ihe marble work ia most elaborately wrought. liich carvings the avchiepUeopul coat of arms, the mitre, keys, &c, form the keystone place; lilies of the valley, grapes of Echol, grainsof wheat, wreaths cf ivy," myrtle, olive branches, etc., ornament the sides, lucompktu as it is iu every part, already the cathedral is a thing of wondrous and fairy like beauty. Its grand doorway is a marvel cf art ; its walls like cur veil suuw iu their purity, and with infinite graces are b!ead-d in their butrcsscs and pillars massive strength with ethereal lightness of tricot. Inside the wails the pic fire is a strange one. Much of the ground is grass-grown, and piles of debris, masses of carved blocks of niarbie, mountains of brick and cement over iuj earth Licit: aud there Work is goii: on, but ia a lazy, creamyfsort cf way. There is no hurrying croud of workmen ; there are no unseemly noises of pulling engines, creaking derricks, and siioiuiug laborer?. A single, luntly-louking horse sedately lounges along a path prepared for him, slowly ho.sting up bricks and mor tar to the men at work n the interior por tion of tlio nulls. A .yoke of patient oxen, and still more patient driver, languidly move big block's of marble hither aud thitlijr on alow sledge. There is no haste; tLe men work as those who work for all time, and propose to taka all time to do it iu. One has au almost iiresistable inclination to lie down aud go to sleep somewhere about the place. The loudest noise to wake him, if he did, would bo the chirping of the countless sparrows chirping about, and his dreams would inevitably ba of ghostly ruins in a land of eternal rest and silence. When com plete, however, it-will be the finest church edifice iu America. S-ienfiJic American. A Nephkw of Pkesident Monroe in a Catujmc 1'l'lpit. Ilov. Father Monroe de livered a sermon a few days ago in a Catho lic church, in New York city, in favor of the temporal power of the l'ope. Father Mon roe is a nephew of the late Presid.'ut James Monroe, aud is a scion of one cf the famous first families of Virginia. Reared in the lap of luxury, he graduated at the Naval Acad emy, at Annapolis, and passed through all the grades of office of the United States Navy until he reached that of full captain. This was his jank when, about 1S5S, he became a convert to tha Iioman Catholic faith. He immediately threw up his com mission, aud. being unmarried, entered ths order of the Jesuits as a candidate for priest ly dignities. In 1SC0 he was ordained a priest in the chapel attached to St. May's College, in Montreal, aud has &iuoe devoted his life to the duties of his new station and th education of youth. He is universally beloved by his pupils, and bears the reputa". tion of being one cf the best professors of mathematics ic the United States. In per son he is tall and thiu, but muscular, with an intellectual aud benevolent countenance, and preaches a si raightLrward, sensible ser mon, without unnecessary ornament or ver bosity. On Sunday la.-t he Fpoke of the loss of the temporal power of the Tope in the most de nunciatory terms. He argued that a tem poral kingdom was as necessary to the head of the church as a spiritual one ; p.nd that he needed sume pot of his own on earth where he might receive his letters and trans act the business relating to the spiritual wel fare of his flock free from the irterference of worldly sovereigns or masters. Hesaid that the Tope had teen removed fiora Koine forty live times already, and that the same power which had restored liim so often could do it again. Father Monroe prophesied, therefore, that lhe time is not far distant when Pope Tius will again wield a temporal power, and he said that it was a matter of history that very sovereign who had interfered with his holiness had eventually lost his own crown, lie instanced Louis Napoleon. Queen Isabel la, and the numerous petty German princes vho have been absorbed by Prussia' greed of power. TI:a M- KKADE, Atlorufy-atlMiv, Ehenshurp, Pa. She wore her head bald, and her clothes were madrt Half petticoat, balf pantaloon; Her fr.ee was the color of lemon peel, And the ebape of a tablespoon. A handsome chap was Johnny Hi Hi, And he wore paper muilin clothes; His glossy black hair on the top of his head In the lorm of a shoe brush rose; His eyes elantee downward as if some chap Had navagcly pulled his nose. Fanny Foo-Foo loved Johnny Hi -Hi, And when in the usual style He popped, she blushed such a deep orange tinge. You'd have thought she had too much bile, If it hadn't been for her slant eyed glance And her charming wide mouthed smile. And oft in the blis3 of their new-born l(ve Did these little pagans stray All around the 6pots, enj-jv ing themselves In a s'rietly Japanese way: She howling a song to a one s'.ringed lute. On which she thought she could play. Often he'd climb to a high ladder's top, And quietly there repose As he stood on his head and fanned himself, While she balanced him n her nose; Or else she would get in a pickle tub, Aud be kicked aiound on his toes. The course of true love, even in Japan, Often runs extremely rough, And the fierce Tycoon, when he heard of this, Used Japanese oaths so lough That his courtiers' hair would have stood on nn end, If they'd had enough. So the Tycoon buckled on both his swordB, In his pistol placed a wad, An 1 went out to hunt the trunnt pnir With his uerve-s. brnced with a tod.
