to sift some of them and take the "smut" out,
but as I ata somewhat pressed for time, my
task must needs be hastily attended to.
Quite a sensation was created at the Ln.m
House a few days ago, caused, if I am rightly

mendaiion. In retiring from cfHco ha leaves
r.ehind him a record which neither malice euu
dim nor praise add lustre to, but nevertheless
we deem it due to a faithful, lxi,ett r.nd
energetic pubi c servant, such as Mr. Blair was,
to say, w hat every man w ho knows him will
re echo, that he has fi led the luil measuro of
public confidence and earned the pood opinion

social intercourse. He bears with him in his

It may not be out of place to say that the
outgoing and ir.com'ng officers united in a free
blow to their friends at tha Ladies' Fair on
Friday right last, and that a pleasant time

Dfah FaErstAN Christmas is coming, and
as a consequence a thrill ot joy pervaJes many
a youthful hoart. Already are the little urchins
out cu'ting Chiis-tmus trees. Already are they
purchasing toy b4loot s, peafow ls, candy hearts
and other knick-knack w iih which to decorate
their favorita trct;s. W hat thousat ds of toys
are daily sold to honor Christmas! What in
numerable bundles of dress goods and fancy
jirticies are beitig r arneJ from cur store by
those who wish to welcome thegloiious holi
days in befitting attire! And in oi-Jer to facil
itate these sales the 'I uibisk prints forty-two
puffs in its last issue, and we see posters on ail
the dismal corners of vacant fences and the
dead wal's of many buildings throughout our
town. Chickens, tutkeys and other fowls, too,
are coining into town in great JJ icks. and peo
ple old and young are preparing for the blessed
and joyous anniversary, irtay all classes enjvy
it to the full exteut, end tt:iy the rich muke it
doubly joyful to themselves and to th.-ir les.
favored neighbors by contributing of their
abundance to tho securing of much needed
comforts for the deserving poor they whom the
beloved Saviour, born on Ci ristmas dy, com
mended to the Care of those woild favored
mortals who desire the salvation of their own
immortal souls.
We have now a regular Stock Exchange in
our town. Almost every Saturday stocks and
securities of various kinds are offered at public
sale at the Market house. Bridge stock, gas
stock, water works stock?, Mechanical Woiks
stcick. etc., are bought and sold like potatoes
or cabbage. Another evidence of the growing
prospeiitv of our tow n.
Johu U. Dudtley, a sailmaker, of Wilmirg
ton, Del., had one of his legs so shockingly
crushed while attempting to get on a moving
freight train, on Wednesday last, that Drs.
Yeagley und Emberson had to amputate the
limb. He was destitute of funds, and was en
deavoring to "bump" LU way homeward w hen
the accident occurred. He is now lying at
Shoemaker's hotel, medical attendance and
support being lurniehed him at the expense of
the county.
The Catholic Fair, under the management
of tho ladies of St. John's congregation, will
open to morrow r.nd be kept open until New
Year's. It will be held iu Union Hail. A large
lot of beautiful and useful articles have been
secured, and voting, drawing or the wheel of
fortune will deci.'e who aro to be the lucky
recipients of thein. We have r.o doubt the
Fair will be numerously attended aui liberally
pitrouized.
The Teachers' Institute met here to day at
one o'clock. A large number of teachers'are
in attendance- I will report their doings in

towards the founding of a raiding room and

Miss L. Householder in rending an essay on
"Tha Intellectual Faculties," and by Mr." Mc
Coriuick in an address on -'The Common School
System."

with excellent music by tha Institute Glee
Club under the management of Prof. W. P.
Davis, of Johnstown.
