Ilia information told bim that to entrap these formidable and ravenous creatures a pit waa dug sev eral feet deep, and after covering it with t jrf leaves, etc, some food waa placed on the top. The bears, if tempted by the bait, easily fall into the snare; "but," he added, "if four or five they happeu to get out again.' 'How ta that V asked the missionary. "They form a sort of ladder by step ping on ench other's shoulders and (bus make their escape." "Hot how does the bottom one get - out !' asked th missionary. "Ah, these bears, though not posses sing a mind and soul such as God has endowed us with, yet can feel gratitude, and they won't forget the one who has been the chief means of procuring their liberty. Scampering off they fetch a branch of a tree, which they let down to their brother, enabling bim to speedily join them in the freedom in which they rejoice." Sensible bears, we ehould say are a great deal better than some men we hear about who never help anybody but themselves. The Sister. No household is complete without a sister. She gives the finish to the family. A sister's love, a sister's influence ! what can be more hallowed ? A sister's watchful care! can anything be more ten der ? A sister's kindness f does the world show us anything more pure? Who would live without a sister? A sister infidelity, in purity, in love, is a sort of guardian angel in a home circle. Her presence coudemns vice. She is the quickeuer of good resolu tions, the sunshine in the pathway of home. To every brother she is a light and life. Her heart is hk'treasure house of confidence. In heV he finds a fast friend, a charitable, forgiving, tender, though often severe frien.'. In her he finds a ready companion. Her sympathy is open as day and sweet as the fragrance of flowers. We pity the brother who has no sister, no sister's love. We feci sorry for the home which is not enlivened by a sister's prebence. A sister's office is a noble and gen tie one. It is Juts to persuade to virtue, to wisdom's ways; gentle to lend where duty calls; to guard the citadel of borne with sleepless vigilance of virtue ; to gather graces and strew flowers around the home altar. To be a sister is to hold a sweet place in the heart of home. It is to minister in a holy office. Let every sister meditate on what she is, and what she ought to be ; on her ofiice, her duty, her pleasure, her life. It is hers to be a model, and set an example of innocence, virtue, cheerfulness, patience, and forbearance, to be the smile and light of home and its circle of loved ones. Papeb Hangings. An exchange says : "When an amateur attempts this kind of do-met-tic decoration, it is desirable that be should attend to the following instructions : otherwise the work, when finished, will be blemibhed and stained. First, pumice-stone tne wait to remove all irregularities of sur face ; then wash over with size, about one pint of glue to a eallon of water, and when dry, the wall is ready to receive the paper. The paste should be well boiled and then passed through a hair sieve to extract the lumps, a fruitful source cf stains. If the walls are inclined to show dampness add a little corrosive sublimate to the paste to prevent mildew forming ou the surface of the paper. The most important matter is to allow the paper to remain pasted for aooui ten minutes before banging, in order that it may Le well stretched before beinw plactd on the wall. Stout paper hangings, such as the "flocks." etc., reqair e a longer time. If these directions are attended to, the thinnest papers will hang without a crease, or the objsctiooable water stains which characterize bad workmanship. Markikd Men. There is an expres sion in the face of a good man who has h good wife, that a bachelor's cannot have. It is indescribable. He is a little nearer the angels than the prettiest young fellow livine. You can see that 1,1a hrond breast is a pillow for somebody's head,. ana that little hngers pull hi3 whiskers. No one mistakes the good married man It is the erratic one, who leaves you in "dotjtft. The eood one can Drotect all ih unprotected females, and make himself generally agreeable to the ladies, and yet never leave a doubt on any mind that there is a precious little woman, at home worth all the world to him. To Keep Tires on Wheels. Hear a practical man on this subject : "I ironed a wagon some years ago for my own use; be fore putting on the tires I filled the felloes with linseed oil ; and the tires have worn out, and were never loose. My method is as follows: I use a long cast iron heater, niade for the purpose ; the oil is brought to a boiling heat, the wheel is placed on a stick so as to hang in the oil, each felloe an houre. The timber Ehould be dry. as green timber will not take the oil. Care should be taken that the oil is not hotter than a boiling heat, or the timber will be burned. Timber filled with oil is not susceptible to injury by water, and Is rendered much more durable by this process." "Sat, Mr. Julius, is der any place in the ISible whar a culled pusson is men tioned ?" said old Casfar to his friend. "Well, dere is, an' if you'd been to mee'n Sunday you'd heard the preacher read how Nigger Demus wanted to be born again." "Wh'-wh'-what he want, to be born again for !" "I dunno ; I spec he thought he might be born a white man next time, an' da's a good many niggers alive cow jest like old Derails, but dey'll allers be niggers, anyhow." Pittsburg Gazette. Fob Wccsds Upon a Hobse. A gentle roan in this city who is said to "know more about a horse than any other man," informs the Maine Farmer, that far a cut in the hoof with tbe cork of a shoe, nothing is better than to pour in melted lard and rosin in equal parts, having it quite hot when poured iu. For a sprain, the best remedy to use is alcohol and beefs gall, putting one gall into a pint of alcohol, and keeping it for the pur pose. -Tincture of arnica, universally usod for sprains, &c, is believed by him to be weakening to the system (being very pene trating in its nature) and is wholly discarded.
