1 M. JUUiW-BBMB A CONTRAST. The New York H'orW, speaking of the Ecwneimml Council at Rome and the Free Thinkers' Convention at Naples, puts the matter aptly in this way : The Ecumenical Gmncil at Rome and the Free-Thinkers' Council at Naples both com- mence their session to-day. It is with no disrepect to either of these assemblages that wo thus mention both of them in the same sentence. The Free-Thinkers selected the 8th f December for their meeting with the express purpose of sharpening lh contrast which the world in any event wouhl pr rceive between their assemblage and that of the bishops at Rome. The contrast would have been sufficiently distinct without this addi tion to the colors of the picture. The c un cil io Rome id composed of Beven or eijiht hundred men. gathered together from every land under heaven; the Nap'es gathering will consist ' f f-w Italians, m few French men, a few Germans, and probuhly a stray Knglishman or American. The bishop come together to pray, and their first ai t will be to unite in the celebration of the au gust mysteries of their faith ; the free-thiuk-ert, if one may judge by the proclamation of Garibaldi Mimmoning them to assemble, come together to curse, and their first act. hould they venture to follow his advice would be to sack the churches of Naples and break up the confessional boxes-for fuel f r tb poor. The bishops will spend weeks', nd perhaps mouths, of anxious and pru dent deliberation over the interests of a church in whose communion by the fr lar ger half of Christendom is embraced : the free thinkers can scarcely find it profitable or pleasant to devote themselves for more than a day or two to mutual exhortation and encouragement. What it is that the free-thinkers propose to accomplish by their council seems ecarcely tj be known ; but the idgns of the times are not such as tn af ford them any great encouragement. That there is a deep and significant chanea in the religious feeling of the world, or of portions of the world, cannot be denied ; but it is not nr-h a change a that to which they invite mankind. Men may be induced o abandon one f.iUb for another ; but those among them v-ho srive up all faith are very few indeed. This i a time of surprises, and perhaps re cent events prevented very much surprise bei-io f-it hy those who read the letter of unproval addressed to the Naples Free Thinkers by the Rjv. Mr. Frothinghani. which we printed yesterday. T5ut Mr. Frothinghim. although far advanced, is fcarcely up to the mark which the Naples Convention will probably reach. mi a FJimffiiffiBi r in s s iiii II 1 11 ill! I M lilfililll iiiimiiiito Mi wiiuu i if'- I i Four HUNDRED THOUSAND Tobacco has really been applied to useful purpose, lock-jaw having been, in one instance, at least, cured by it. A s.ddier in Illinois was wounded in the foot, and, having taken Cold in it, lock jaw ensued. No medicims could be pro cured, and, as death seemed inevitable, an experiment was tried by one of the officers. He cut off" a piece of tobacco Hbout three inches square, put it in a mees pan with boiling water until it was heated through and saturated with the water ; allowing it to cool, so as not to blister, he then flattened it out, and placed it on the pit of the man's stomach. In ubout tive minutes the patient turned white about the lips, which also began to twitch, and in nine or ten minutes his j ws fell open. Indeed, it seemed as it' the patient would fall apart, eo utterly was his whole system relaxed The tobacco wa9 immediately removed, and wme whisky-gruel given to stimulate him. The next day the man was able to be carried in an ambulance, and was soon convalescent. In lock-jaw it seems nec essary to produce nausea that the rigid muscles may relax, and tobacco, applied externally, has this effect. The remedy, however, is very powerful, and should be applied with extreme caution. Swine-driving is as easy as whistling, after you know how, to wit : "To the end of a stout cord tie an ear of corn, drop it in front of the pig, to within five or fix inches of his nose, and commence walking away in the direction you wish him to propel If his pigship shows evi dence of blighted hopes or aberration of mind, from the singular conduct of the corn, peduce him into the belief that it is all right by letting him have a brief nib ble at it and then resume your line of march. In this way the most obdurate pig may be decoyed any reasonable dis tance. " CHAIR MANUFACTORY. mm rt n a mm ON. JOXSTOW., PA.
