Sukkman Mnin-je, indeed, are the upa and downs of life. We cann t judge by appearances, The ricissitudes of the world affairs, the caprices of for tune, the accidents of events are beyond foresight. The Leavenworth, Kansas, Commercial tells the following story about the life of Gen. Sherman : On the first day of January, 1859, three lawyers formed a copartnership in this city, and opened au oflice in the sec ond story of a tottering old frame building on the east side of Main, between Dela ware and Slmwn:e streets. Suerinan, Ewing & McCook," so read the sign. Win. T. Sherman ; his brother-in'law, Tom. Ewing, now a citizen of Washing ton;, and Dan. McCook, (afterward mor tally wounded at Kenessw, while leading his brigade), constituted tha firm. Ew ing dabbled largely is real estate at that time, and mixed considerably iu politics. McCook attended chiefly to the court bur-ines, and Sherman was left to do the honors of the office. There "Captain Sherman", shone io all his glory, Seated on. his rickety chair, with his feet on the smoky stove, he talked by the hour to his friends, who habitually loafed about the oflice. Everj body liked Captain Sher man,' and Sherman liked good listeners; hence he had plenty of company. He was a good talker, and very entertaining. lie never tried but one case. That was an action of ejectmeut before 'Squire Whitney, who 'then hud a subterranean office undar the corner of Second and Del aware. Colonel B. was for plaintiff, Sherman for the defense. Sherman got badly beat B. wound him up, and wound him down and scooped him on every point. After the war the General was a?ked if he remembered the case. "Yes," aid he, "old B. beat me all to pieces in that lawsuit in the afternoon, but that night I beat him." "How was that ?" "You. see it was an action for posses sion. My client was a poor Irishman, who had leased a lot, and put up a shanty on it. lie failed to pay the rent on it hence the action. After we were beaten before the justice, we immediately rented the lot adjoining, and that night ray cli ent moved bis shanty over on to it." Sherman soon became disgusted with the law. The partnership had lasted but a couple of mouths, when he was offered a professorship in ' the Louisiana-State Military School, which he gladly accepted. Getting Yocr Monet Back. One of the novelties of a 1 ariaian enterprise is a large warehouse, in which are sold, at re tail, all manner of goods from a diamond necklace to a shoe-brush. The purchaser having paid the price receives not only the goods, but a bond for the whole amount of his purchase money, payable after thirty year, and guaranteed by the Credit Fonccter and other moneyed corn porations. The prices charged are said to be no greater than in other retail shops. This U really eating your cake io order to keep it ; the more you spend the richer yob will be ; indeed, it tets at defiance the whole of Franklin's code of proverbs, and proves poor Richard a silly fellow. Imagine Jones lecturing his wife on her economy, and reproaching her for a spirit of saving. "My dear, if you had bought this camel's hair shawl thirty years ago, it would be now a source cf income to us ; if you had not been so close we fhould now be wealthy," he eays. Smith ac quires an independence by giving his chil dren au expensive outfit ; and sees, in every new dress or costly jewel which bis growing daughters wear, a new mine of wealth for himself. If he can only per suade them to spend enough, he is sure of a support in his oi l age. Cold Comfort An old missionary, who had been many years in Labrador, was at length compelled to return, his influence all gone and his mission entirely fruitless. A young man, who was just fledging it to the ministerial status, was appointed in his place, and before he went to his assignment he thought he would visit his venerable predecessor and learn from bim the cause of Lis trcuole in the lane! of icebergs, iui oiu man received him very cordially. "My venerable brother," said the young roan, "I wish you to tell me the cause of your difficulty that I may avert a like failure. Must I preach them a hell that is hot?" "No, my young friend," said tbe old missionary, laying bis hand on his brother's arm ; no, that was the rock I split on. I preached it very warm to them, and they rather liked the idea of going there. I think iyou preach them a hell fifty degrees colder than Labrador you will drive them all to repentance." "Sam, did did you (hie) see anything of my wife?" "I have not the hoaor of knowing your wife, sir." "Don't apologize. Sam, don't apo apo hie ! ligize. I i-it'a no honor whatever. It is said that a pol tice of onions applied morning, noon and night, for three or for r days, will cure a felon. No matter hoi bad the case, lanc ing will be unnecessary if the poultice is applied.
