Dear Freeman An altercation between a young white man named John Trice and three negroes took place on Franklin street last Tuesday evening. It is alleged that uue of the darkies made an insulting remark 1. ..1 11 to a wuue lauy parsing at me tiaie, sua ne j was remonstrated with by 1 rice for so doing. Iligh words ensued, but tho parties were about peparating when one of the negroes namtd Johnston drew a razor from his poc kt t and attempted to cut young Trice in the neck, but the blow w:is warded ff by Trict interposing his arm, the coat Ieeve only 1?- uig cut. oonueion men maue anoiorr iu.ic , at Price, and this time succeedcl in giving biin a o,e!tv severe cut in the tliiilb. The ubony ccloreJ iudividualu then ded, but, two of them were subsequently arrested, and af ter a hearing one ws released and the other held in the sum of $5C0 to answer the charge of assault aud battery. In the meantime Johnton was captured iu Indiana and bro't to this place, when, after a legal inveptisation of his conduct, he was remanded to the lock up to ascertain if any person could be f.-und who would go hi security, in the sum ot $1,000, to appear at Kbcueburg when called upon, to answer the charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. As the necessary amount was not forthcoming, it was decided that he shou'd be conveyed to jail on Friday evening, but when the officer repaired to the lock-up to take charge of his prisoner he was rather dismayed to find him non est. It ap pears that iiu inebriated individual had been lucked up during the afternorn. and had been located in the front part of that insti tution, but recovering sooner than was anti cipated, he broke open the drawer of the ofiice table, wbeie the cell key were kept, and libei ated Johnston. A number ef picks and shovale were stored ia another cell, and by means of one of the picks the lock of the outer door was force, and between lie and -ix o'clock in the evening the prisoner de parted, aui up to the present hour have fail ed to return or stud word as to their where abouts. A miner named Jhn B. Davis, vho was employed in one of the C. I. Co-'s mines, was killed ly a fall of slate on Tuesday morn ing last, and his sad fate was not discovered until about teu o'clock that night, when a f How boarder, becoming alarmed at his un usual absence, went to.the mine in quest o! h;m. and f .nnd the remains as stated. A lady resi li: g in Conersaugh borough arose very erly one morning last week, and after lighting the kitchen tire returned to bed, but forgot to remove some shavinga which were iu cloa proximity to the stove. A few me-mtnts at'tirwards she iletected an unusual amount of smoke in her bed-chamber, and hx-king towards the kitchen, was horrified to sw, as she supposed, th house on fire, aud immediately losing all presence of mind, broke out a flight of ash, and catching a couple of sleeping children, tin ceremonieviy pitched them out. Fortu nately the fad eJid not hurt them much, ard with too assistance of a few neighbors the incipient coiiiljgratioa was .'XlingU!s!id. The Ikland night school, which has f..r ?wvt'ia'. months past been taught wilb great fiicc-ss ly Mr. A. C. Johnson, closed last week with a distribution of books among the rchtilars. This school was under the exclu sive patronage cf the C. I. Co.. and h.;s been of incalculable benefit to a large class of young men and boys who are compelled to iabor for their liviug. The books were also furnished by the Company, aDd the presen tation took place iu the now school house on Wat-hingtcn street. Tho preliminary steps towards the forma tion 0! a Young Men's Christian Association have been taken, and a committee appointed to tffuct a permanent organ izuioii. The great difficulty in securing suitable quarters for a library and reading room is the only drawback to the success ef this commenda ble enterprise. If succesbful it cannot fail to accomplish much good. A nw bridge across the Conemaugh. to replace the old aqueduct, is now in process of construction. It will be entirely of iron, and will be the neatest and most durable structure of the kind in this viciuity. I have heretofore neglected to notice the departure of Messrs. Henry Walters and Geo. ivoiutr, two 01 our o,jest ami most respected no i;a uu uiciuuiuis, woo naye lt-u tins ( place to locate permanent!,) in the West. The best wishes of tur entire community will fallow these gentlemen to their new homes. Our police have furnished themselves with neat and tasty badges, and will in a few days appear in pew uniforms. The "war clubs" have not been visible of late, but as next Saturday is "pay day," they will doubt less be tnce more on hands, as a number of first class "scalp dances" will likely occur at that time." Mr. Editor Tho turnpike hereabout, uu ally called the "store pike," which forms the principal street of eur towo, was con structed about the years 1819 and 1820. Trior to that time the means of communica tion between the eastern and tha western portions of the State were very poor. Tho Frankstown road, which crossed the moun tains on the southern side of the county, was the "principal route that connected the valley of the Juniata with the v.Mley of the Concmacgh. This was a very ancient rosd. and is frequently mentioned in the old pro vincial records. It wound down, and still winds down, what is called Cover's Hill, east of Jo!tPto.vn, and enters the town at thn head of Main street. Where tho road lod to the west of Johnstown I cannot sar, but I have seen part of an old road in a field below Blairsville, and was told that it was tha old Frankstown road. The construction ef the turnpike was at the time considered a g-eat achievement. I incline to think. Mr. Editor, that in those old days there was more real friendship in the world, more truth and faith, mora virto uj patriotism. and leas of hollow pretension in men hearts, than now. But even at all reasons the business on this r:ad was considerable, and we Well remember the flourish of trumpets with which the well-laden stage coaches were wi.nt to announce themselves in villages along the route. The building of the T. It H.. and other railroad lints through the State, was the death-blow to the prperity of the turnpike. It ws the smooth stone in the head of O -liah.
