GZ3 EC Sk. WORTH KMOWIS3. Farly Tomatoes and Cecum ueks. Y eorropimilent of the Furm and I'iru.iue tay3 lie gets tomatoes and cucumbers two or three weeks earlier than tliey arc usually found in Northern markets, by adopting the following, plan : Our tomato prac tice is to scrape out two dozen fair t-ized turnips to thin shells, hill them with rich garden mould, plant a few seeds in each, place them in a box of enrth, covering quite up to the top, place the lox in a warm room, fter" the ' plants are up, -water when required, give light and out-door air on alb pleasant warm days. Select the strongest plant in each shell to grow, pulling out the othejs. Tinch back two vigorous bhoets, tir:-e stout, stocky growth by frequent slight feedings of tejid i Kjur milk sometimes weak soap- Mids and when the irost season is fairly part, set turnip shells, tomato plants and all in the out-door soil where they are to grow, and they will go right on growing without anv hesitation or standing still, as they do coining from a hot-bed. Cucumbers wo persuade forward in the same manner ; planting them in blocks of turf instead ol turnip t hells, and almost , always we have tomatoes and cucumbers well set on the vines before setting them in out door position. Cucumbers, white, -ri.q, cool, tender, almost seedless, live irom all unpleasant earthy taste, and :'.s delicate and delicious as cucumbers can be may be induced by simply, placing small fruit within a section of draintile llower-plot, or old bottle with the neck knocked oiY, covering them from the sun light and growing them to table size i:i the dark. VTiiitk-.vapii is one of the most valuable articles in the world when properly applied. It not only pre vents the decay of wood but condu ces greatly to the healthiness of all buildings whether of wood or stone. Outbuildings find fences, when not painted, should be supplied once or twice every voir with a good coat of whitewash, which should be pre pared in the following way : Take a lean water tight barrel or other s.ii.'a'ole carV, and put into it half a bushel of lime. Slake it by pouring water ovtr it boiling hot, and in Sclent quantity to cover it live incSiC d-ep, and stir it briskly till t-iioroughly shiked. "When the slak ing hue Von thoroughly effected dis ,lvy " it in water, and add two pounds of sulphate of zinc, and one of common salt ; these will cause the w.-u-h to hirdcn and prevent its cracking, giving un unseemly ap pearance to the work. If desirable, a beautiful cream color may be com-muiiM-ated -Jo the above wash, by adding three pounds of yellow oehiv; or a good pearl or lead color, by adding lamp, vine or ivory black. For fawn color, add four pounds of umber Turkish or American, the latt er is the cheapest one pound of Indian red, and one pound of common lamp black. For com mon stone color, add four pounds of raw umber and two pounds of lamp black. This wash may be applied with a common whitewash brush, and will be found much fcnperior both in appearance and durability, to the common white w;vsh. Superior Couqh Mixture. - Ilalf an ounce of senna, half an ounce of tfick liquorice, half an ounce of carrav.-ay seed, half an ounce of enakeroot. IJoil in a quart of water until reduced to a pint;. then strain it and add half a pint of morasses, and boil it a few minutes longer. When cold, add a good - generou half pint of best ginor whisky, and bottle tight. ' Tike half a wine glass four times a day until relieved. . Diitrekia ix Fowls. The dis easo known as diptheria in chickens may be cured easily by the follow ing method. Take a small wooden paddle and remove the yellow mat ter from the tongue, and then apply lard and black pepper to the dis eased parts. A single application is generally sufficient, and a second is always sufficient. We get tin's from a large grower of poultry. A whiter in the London Journal of Horticulture gays tint either coarnon alcohol or metliylic alcohol (wood spirit) as a wash, will destroy the wooly aphis and other insects 1 friut trees mora effectually than a 'ft :;qV sul.hur wash, or any :iaiT compound generally used for : .t purpose.
