An Act of Ckueltt. Mr. Uonner, of the New York Lsdgcr, i Jcertainly excu sable for turning an honest penny by set ting Mr. Grant, the father of the General of that name, at work to puft into emi nence his son. But Ilouner has much to answer for, in beguiling from a respecta Lie obscurity an innocent old gentleman, anl inducing him to display his egotism and garrulity in the futile attempt to make a great man out of a very ordinary hoy. If the father had sufficient power of dis cernment to see in his eon Ulysses the germs of greatness, why did he not give him a better situation than that of a por ter in his leather ptore in Galena, at a alary of forty dollars a month a pmall pittance for a man with a family ? The elder Grant boasts of having been able to give each of his children $25,000, after retaining enough to support himself and family in at kast comfortable circumstan ces. ' Why, then, did he not out of that abundance, give the great and brilliant Ulysses, the small sum of three hundred dollars, to enable him to purchaee an outfit, wlion he was offered the commis sion of a lieutenant-colonel f Why was it that it was left for a former partner of the elder Grant, E. A. Collin, Esq., to fur nish the means for procuring ktiat outfit, after the positive refusal of the father and brother to advance him a dollar for that purpose? We would respectfully suggest that the leapt said on a subject like this by the relatives of General Grant, with a view to improve his chance for the Presi dency, will be the roost easily mended. A judicious "reticence" is a vory good thing in its place. Cleveland Pluindcaltr. A Sixui.no Mol'sk. The Dayton -(Ohio) Ledger vm the following ; ''One of the greatest curiosities of the age may be Hen nt Julius liornstein's cigar store, on Third street. It is no more nor no less than a singing mouse. On several occa sions Mr. li. had heard something singing and whistling about his store after the manner of a canary. lie was much puz zled to know whenco the strange sonnds came. A few days ago, he discovered the object of his curiosity. It was a common eized grey mouse, and having duly set his trap, caught the little animal. He now has it caged and on exhibition, and hun dreds are flowing to see the little eingist and hear its 'sweet, musical notes.' This afternoon, tho little creature became tired ami refused to sing, when Mr. liornstein's brother commenced playing on a violin, and the mousa at once fcJl to aud did the beat it knew how to All its part of the pro gramme." Little, we presume, did people think who flocked to see and hear the mQsc that its musical cry was the cry of pain. We believe it is now generally admitted that the mouse never tings only when ho suffers the most acute agony. The eauso of his sufFring is a parasite in tie liver ; this parasite bores its way into the delicate organ, making it the seat of fain ; and when in deep distress, the littK; animal crunches down aud gives ul teranco to a soft, plaintive cry, resembling in ca-hnce a low, bird-like song. It is peasant to think that from the very depths of woe and misery often bubble up the sweetest harmonies. Calvjs. It is more humane, and bet ter policy besides, to take away the calf, which is to be removed in a few days nt farthest, as soon as it i6 dropped. The cow "takes on" less, and the calf does not mind the separation at all. It will learn to drink from a pail readily. Its diet at Grst must be its dam's new milk, and then any sweet milk ; after the first week it may be changed gradually to skimmed milk with a little oil meal gruel, or a thin porridgo of wheat middlings mingled with it the quantity of meal being in creased as it grows, and that of milk les sened, iicours may usually be checked by a little scalded fine flour porridge. aid constipation by oil meal. Young calves should be fed four times a day, dividing the periods equally between 5 or 6to'clocf in the morning and 9 or 10 at night Af ter a few days throe limes a day will be enough Tub Virtues of Gi.tcehise. nail's Journal of Health asserts positively that glycerine is a perfect cure for diplheria and membranous croup, when applied with a Boft camel's hair brush to the in terior of the throat Tho penetrating qualities of the glycerine enable it to e,H rate the granules of which the rac mbraneg are formed in both these diseases, and not ouly destroy them but prevent their fur ther formation. These are two most in sidious and terribly fatal disease?, and if this simple and harmloss remedy will cure them, it should be generally known. Gly cerine is a most valuable medicine, and hhould be kept in every house. It is a perfect remedy fbr chapped hands, lips, or other chafed, raw surfaces, curing them by simply applying a email quantity to tie part affected. Poisons is Daii.t Use. Pickles are often poisoned by being scalded in brass or copper kettles ; it makes them look green, but that green renders them pois onous. Brass or copper vessels ought not to bo ased for any purpose, unless they are scoured very bright ; it is better for health to avoid their use for cooking pur poses. Brass wash dishes ought never to be used ; they cause sore eyes, etc Wa tr is poisoned by being conveyed in lead pipe, or standing in pails painted on the inifido. Milk is poisoned by using 6uch paik for milking. Cheese is often poisoned in this way, and by using in its manu facture brass, copper or wooden tubs painted inside. KcriNKD saltpetre is one of the be6t re swdies for eore gums or throat. Take a bit as big as a pea and let it slowly dig sol re in your mouth, and from time to time repeat this and great relief will be experienced. We have known severely inflamed throats with a tendency to ul ceration entirely cured by this simple remedy.
