CU1TUARY,
.' It i with feelings of deep regret we an-
" yce tha death of Air. William Rod
St, of this city. The respected de
ceased dc-norUxi this life at his residence,
No. 275 Htt Eleventh street, on the 5th
instant und in tha sixty-seventh year of
Lis ace. At halfpaet -nine o'clock on the
morning wf the 7th inefc., t"he remains
were conveyed to St. Joseph's Church,
Sixth avenua, where a Solemn Mass of
Hequiem was celebrated by the Ilev.
Tuoajia Farrell, the Most Key. Archbish
op, Very llev. Mr.- Starrs, V. G., and
laany of tha Reverend Clergy being pre
en. There was also u numerous t tend
ance of the relatives and friends wf the
family of the deceased. At the conclusion
cf the Alas absolution was pronounced by
the Archbishop, after which the remains
were conveyed to the cemetary t Ford
ham College, where they were deposited
in the same vault in which repose the re
xoains of his daughter.
' Sir. lioJrigue was a native of Philadel
phia, and wn of French descent. At the
close of lis collegiate education he visited
France, and during hi3 three years stay
devoted Li niif If to th s'.udy of art with
the view of adopting it as his profession.
On his return he entered the oSie of Mr.
Strickland, tha well-known Philadelphia
architect, and wub connected with the
erection of the United States Dank. He
was subsequently engaged in surreying ex
peditions through the Htates of Pennsyl
vania and Virginia, ad also in Can tda.
Among his works while living in Phila
delphia he furnished the plan and design
of St. John's Church, of which the late
illustrious Archbishop of New Yoik wa
photor. In the year 1833 he removed to
New York with bis family, and resumed
the practice of his profession In this city.
The Church cf St. Francis Xaier, in
Sixteenth street, was built on his plane
and specification:!, as was also the Cl'.ur. h
ef the Iniraacuhlte Conception, ia Four
teenth street. In both instances, how
ever, the limited means atcomaaand com
pelled a modification of the original design.
We should state here that the very fine
addition to the old St. Patrick' Cathedral,
a work which was universally admired
for its beauty of design and urchitectaral
finish, was made by the deceased. Tbe
last important work with which the late
Mr. Rodrigee was connected was the iew
St. Patrick's Cathedral. la this he was
associated with llr. Renwick, but for
several years past his failing health con
lined him almobt entirely indoors, and he
took no active part ia tire practical super
intendence of its erection.
Mr. RjJrigue was related to the late
Archbishop1 of New York, having keen
married to the sister of that distinguished
prolate a lady who i beloved and re
spected by all who possess the honor of
her friendship or acquaintance. The de
ceased gsntleciaa was earnestly devoted to
bis profession, too much so to fall in wi.h
lbs ptle of the present day a style in
which the KuitMotlal and the artistic is
too often sacrificed to less worthy conrid
cratioQS. As a man, he was esteemed by
all "who knew him fur his integrity of
character, bid courteous demeanor, and
the virtues of a true Christian gentleman.
An affectionate and devoted husband and
father, he has left behind him a memory
that will nevur cease to be cheiiehed.
May he rent in peace. JY. Y. Mtk-ipoli-.

Death We have never read anything
More beautiful than the following froaa the
pen of George D. Prentice :
"There is but a breath cf air and a
beat of tha heart betwixt this world and
the next. And in the brief interval f
painful anl awful suspense, while we feel
that death ia present ni:h us, that we are
powerlesd, and he all powerful, and the
last faint pulsation here is but the prelude
of endless life hereafter, we feel, in the
rnidit of tho stunning calamity about to
befall us, that the earth has do cernpen
ating good to mitigate the severity of our
loss. Hut there is no grief without some
beneficent provision to soften its intense
Bess. When the good and- the lovely die
the memory of their good deeds, like the
moonbeams on the stormy sea, lights up
our darkened hearts and lends to the sur
rounding gloom a beauty so sad, so sweet,
that we would not if we could dispel the
darksess that environs it.
To Phcpa.es Laud. Cut tL tat iuto
small pieces, and put in a pot miboct
water or salt, to simmer orar a very slow
fire ; stir it up frequently that it Kay not
stick or burn. When it is quite clear
aad transparent, put it into stone jars of
from one to four gallons each ; if auy salt
is to be added, mix it in while the lard ie
cooling. The nest day take pieces of
white muslin rather Larger than the top of
the jar ; press a piece smoothly down on
the iard, pack in a close layer of !t an
luck thick to exclude the air, lay another
pitce of cloth over it, cerer the jar tight,
lying over all two thicknesses of paper.
Butter or lard packed in this maauer will
keep perfectly sweet through the year, ia
a cool dry place. Ia England it ie cus
tomary t j put a sprig of rosemary iato the
lard while melting.
