Unique among railroad schools is that lliieh has just been established at Al oona, Pa., by the Pennsylvania Rail- M'l Company, the management of rtiich has arranged with the Penn sylvania State College to send profes sors to Altoona two days a week to nrve instruction to apprentices em- j ployed in the railroad shops. Special 91a rters have been constructed for the school rooms. The plan with which the Pennsyl vania It-til road is experimenting is to educate apprentices along the lines of work which they are following, with the view that this instruction will re- | •olt in their becoming better and more efficient workmen. At the same time, their records in the school will give the employing officers a better op porluaity to judge of their quaiflca tioiiH. From the ability shown in the school and with the records in the shops, the officers can determine upon the lilness of the apprentices for ad vancement in the service. The pro fessors will make a monthly report on the progress made by each one attend ing the school. The membership of the first class will !>e composed of apprentices of the fourth year who have shown ability in their work and a disposition to better their education. It will be optional with the young men whether or not they will take the course, but after en tering the school attendance will be compulsory. The first-class will be limited to thirty apprentices. The course of instruction, while not be definitely determined upon, will, in a general way, consist of the various elementary principles of mechanics, mechanism and materials, and simple computations based upon these «üb ects. The Hchool was opened on | M ech Ist, and will continue in session notil the first of June. Sessions] will be held 011 Tuesdays and Fridays, two hours each day, from "one o'clock to threi o'clock.
