The Sheriff display- i ed guarded discretion and refused to admit any Italians, except Santo i Legato. In fact no 1 Italians came i near the courthouse grounds, having ; made their visits before the execution, j Very many Sheriffs and other coun ty officials attended the execution on j Tuesday. It was just seven months to the day j when John Kibe was buried that Joe | Pagano paid the penalty. * * About seventy persons witnessed the execution, including the deputy sheriffs. * * * Joe Pagano, the victim of his crime, leaves a mother and two sisters in Italy, to whom he sent §20.00 every two months."His mother, who had been notified of the date of execution, hoped her boy might be saved from the gallows. She was written to and pos- i sibly received a letter on Monday ap prising her of the execution on Tues day. Series of Bible Talks. William Alexis Stone was born on a Tioga oounty farm in IS4O. When the civil war broke out lie was too young to enlist; but, with several other boys, lie ran away from home, and because of his unusual size lie was per mitted to enlist. His father demanded and obtained his discharge, but a few months later ho became a private in Company A, One Hundred and Eighty-seventh Pennsylvania volunteers. In 1805 he was commissioned as second licvtl enant. lie was from IS7I to 1875 lieutenant colonel and assistant adjutant general of the Thirteenth division of the national guard. lie was admitted to the bar in IS7O at Wellsboro. He took up liis residence in Pitts burg in 1877 and from 1880 to 1880 was United States district attorney for the western district of Pennsylvania, lie represented the Twenty-ninth dis trict in congress from ISOI to 1808. lie was elected governor in ISOS after a hard fought battle. _ |nn _ DANIEL HART MAM HASTINGS—IB9S-1899. Per some time he was editor of the Hellefi nte Republican. He was admitted to the bar in 1575 and for thirteen years was in active practice, p.eculn.tr Interested in ISSS in the coal mining business, he retired from his law practice. When General Beaver became governor he appointed Mr. Hastings adjutant general. Gen eral Hastings' services in behalf of the Johnstown Hood sufferers will long bo remembered. He made the speech nominating General Beaver for gov ernor in 188G and two years afterward made the speech nominating John Sherman for the presidency. Again in 1800 he made a speech nominating Matthew Stanley Quay for the presidency. General Hastings was defeated for the Republican nomination for goveruo' in ISOO, but in ISO 4 was nomi nated by a unanimous vote and elected. ' • if"!*- \ jKi.v-. | ' v EDWIN SYDNEY STUART—I9O7. Edwin Sydney Stuart, the present chief executive of Peiinsyiiwiiia, WHS born in Philadelphia Dec. 28, 185:5, of Scotch-Irish parentage. At the ijge of fourteen he obtained a position as office boy in Lear.v's bookstore. Philadel phia. Governor Stuart always took a lively interest in politics. He served two terms as president of the Republican State league, in 1888 and ls>:> As a candidate for presidential elector in the Blaine campaign of 188-1 he had the highest vote on the ticket, l-'our years afterward lie was a delegate to the national convention which nominated Benjamin Harrison. 111 1893 he \vas elected mayor of Philadelphia by the largest majority ever given mayoralty candidate.
