Jackson, Miss. —A special to the Clarion Ledger from Meridian says that it is estimated 50 persons are j dead and scores are injured by the tornado. Memphis, Tenn., March 3. —A spe- ; cial from Meridian says that more ■ than a score of bodies are amutiK the wreckage. Eighteen bodies have been j recovered. Mobile, Ala., March 3. —Not more than half a dozen persons were killed by a tornado that devastated Meridian, j Miss., last evening, according to a long distance message to the Item from J. j D. Breaux, service man of the Cum- : berland Telephone Co. at Meridian, j He gives details of the tornado as fol lows: During a heavy rain at 6:30 j o'clock a storm cloud developed in the south and moved on the city, striking Front street, the business center, with | full force. The wind was probably blowing 75 j miles an hour. The tornado passed 1 over in about two minutes and during that period three or four whole , squares were devastated. A conserva- ! tive estimate places the number of buildings blown down at between 30 and 40. From the business center the tor- j nado jumped to the east end, where a number of residences were blown j down and others badly damaged. Mr. Breaux stated that the number of lives j lost is small, probably not more than i three or 112 »ir. One of the victims, a ! man named Johnson, was hemmed in the wreckage and at 10 o'clock last | night he was reached by the rescuing \ party, to whom he spoke and begged ! them to hurry. BANKER WALSH IS ARRESTED. A Chicago Financier Is Accused of Misappropriating $3,000,000 of a Bank's Funds. Chicago, 111.—John R. Walsh, presi dent of the defunct Chicago na- j tional bank, which closed its doors December 18, 1905, was on Friday j taken into custody on a federal war- j rant which .charges him with violation j of the national banking laws in mak- j itig false returns to the comptroller j of the currency and also asserts that lie converted to his own use. without proper authority, funds of the bank amounting to $3,000,000. He was re- j leased after giving bonds to the [ amount of §50,000. The complaint alleges in specific terms that on November IS, 1905, the Chicago national bank, of which Mr. Walsh was president, transmitted to the comptroller of the currency a statement of the financial condition of the bank at the close of business on November 9. In this statement "the said John R. Walsh unlawfully made certain false entries to the effect that at the close of business on the 9th day of November the amount of loans and discounts of the said banking associa tion on which the officers and direct ors thereof were then liable either as payor or endorser was 3245,000, whereas in truth the amount of such loans and discounts was $3,000,000, and another false entry to the effect that the amount of loans and dis-. counts of the said association for which the officers and directors were not liable as payers or endorsers was $10,058,282, whereas in truth the amount of such loans and discounts on which officers and directors were not liable was much smaller, namely $7,500,000." FINANCE AND TRADE. Dun's Weekly Review Gives Very En couraging Reports. New York.-*-R. G. Dun & Co.'s Weekly Review of Trade says: Prospects are most encouraging for continued activity in tha commercial world. Seasonable merchandise is go ing into consumption more freely and preparations for a large spring trade keep shipping departments busy. Mercantile collections are still some what irregular, although satisfactory on the whole, especially in view of the firm money market. Manufacturing plants report little idle machinery ex cept all northwestern flour mills, where the heavy output has exceeded demands for a time. Probably the best news of the week was the prompt response to President Roosevelt's pacific letter to the con testing coal interests. "I was afflicted with psoriasis for thirty five years. It was in patches all over my body. I used three cakes of Cuticura Soap, six boxes of Ointment, and two bottles sf Resolvent. In thirty days 1 was completely cured, and I think permanent ly, as it was about five years ago. '1 he psoriasis first made its appearance in red [.pots, generally forming a circle, leaving in the center a spot about the size of a sil ver dollar of sound flesh. In a short time the affected circle would form a heavy dry scale of a white silvery appear ance and would gradually drop off. To remove the entire scales by bathing or using oil to soften them the flesh would be perfectly raw, and ■» light discharge of bloody substance would ooze out. That scaly crust would form again in twenty four hours. It was worse on my arms and limbs, although it was in spots all over my body, also on my scalp. If 1 let the scales remain too long without removing by bath or otherwise, the sk n would crack and bleed. 1 suffered intense itching, worse at nights after getting warm in bed, or blood warm by exercise, when it would be almost unbeHrable. W. M. Chidester,Hutchinson, Kan., April2o, 1905." Speaking from Experience. "How do you like being civilized?" »sl;ed the philanthropist. "Well," answered the simple child of nature, "civilization is great for the mind, but it is mighty hard on the digestion."— Washington btar. To Clean Oil Paintings.
