Some of flic Democratic leaders say they will attempt to mako the Tariff Hie leading issue in 1904. It is safe to say that the Republi cans will he glad to asssist them iu this endeavor. If there is any thing that the Republicans would be grateful to the Democrats for in 1904. it is for bringing the Tariff question to the front, if they do this. Two or three Democrats in Congress have been making anti- Tariff addresses recently, with the intention of using them as cam paign documents. The Republi cans will be glad to assist felie Dem ocrats in disseminating all of that sort of literature that they will want to send out. The Tariff is a pretty old issue. It has been talked about in many canvasses. In several campaigns it has turned the scale. For a great many years the Republican party has stood out sturdily for a Tariff which will give adequate Protection to American interests. For many of those interests the Re publicans have been able to secure considerable Protection. All the interests that deserve aid of this sort at the custom house the Re publican party will defend. Let the Democrats be under no illus ions on that point. The Republi can party would be very glad to see the issue of Protection brought to the front by the Democrats. The wiser members of the Demo cracy know there is peril for their party in assailing the Tariff, but perhaps some of the tenderfoot leaders of 1904 uiay be deluded in to making an assult on this system. Several excuses were made for Hancock's defeat in 1880, but the Tariff was the real cause of his overthrow. It was the Mills bill, which never passed, that laid out Cleveland in 1888. The Republi cans do not need the Tariff as an aid in 1904, but they will accept it if the Democrats are obliging eno igh to furnish it. Under the Rep iblieau Tariff of 1897 the country has had a prosperity al most without example in its annals. If the Democrats want to assail this act, the Republicans would very cheerfully meet them on that line. If the Democrats make an attack on the Tariff this year they will be conferring a very great favor on every Republican candidate, from President Roose velt downward. —St. Louis "Globe Democrat." Inquire of J. W. VERGUSON, 15 Bt. Emporium, Pa. THE TRUST QUESTION. TIIK DEMOCRATS DID NOTHING, BUT THE REPUBLICANS PASSED TIIK LAW AND ENFORCED IT. [Omaha "Bee"] The Cleveland administration held the anti-trust law of 181)0, a Republican measure, to be defective and inadequate, yet the Democratic Congress make no ef foit to remedy the defects and strengthen the law and only a perfunctory attempt was made to enforce it. Its value has since been successfully tested by a Re publican administration. Furthermore, a Republican Congress has enacted legis lation for the supervision of the combina tions by the Government, to the extent of requiting them to furnish information in regard to their organization, financial j condition and business methods. Pub licity is provided for in the ease of a corporation found to be conducting its affairs in a way inimical or injurious to the public interests. Kvery intelligent man knows that this legislation has been repressive and bene ficial. It has been largely instrumental in putting a stop to the promotion ot trusts and overcapitalized combinations. What assurance can the Democratic party give that if restored to power it would even carry out this Republican legislation, to say nothing of adding to ii? That party did not make any serious or sincere effort to enforce the anti-trust I law when it had the opportunity and I there is no reason to believe that given j another opportunity it would make an ! honest effort to enforce any of the laws dealing with trusts and combinations en . acted by the Hepublicau party. Cured ot Chronic Diarrhoea After Ten Years of Suffering "I wish to say a few words in praise of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy," says Mrs. Mattic Burge, of Martinsville, Ya. "I suffered from chronic diarrhoea for ten years and during that time tried various medicines without obtaining any permanent relief. Last summer one of my children was taken with cholera morbus, and I procur ed a bottle of this remedy. Only two doses were required to give her entire re lief. I then decided to try the medi cine myself, and did not use all of one bottle before I was well and I have never since been troubled with that complaint. One cannot say too much in favor of that wonderful medicine." This remedy is for sale by Jno. E. Smith, Sterling Run. Subscribe for the PRESS; only $1.50 a year in advance. ALLEGHENT COLLEGE.
