A corresspondent writes as follows from Medix Run, under date of May 4, to the Dußois Searchlight: The B. & S., are now bringing train loads of logs from the vicinity of Sinna mahoning to the big mill, the branch from the main line, of their new road coming across Bennetts Branch and under the Low Grade high bridge over Medix Run. The getting in of logs though is hampered by the newness of the tracks, which interfere with the ex peditious movement of the trains. The B. & S., are also preparing to get at the summer's lumbering opera tions up Medix Run. A number of Italians are working-at the tracks lay ing extensions that are necessary in the forest to get the log trucks to the logs after they are skidded. This work by the company is somewhat in back ward state as bark peeling should be under way in a very few days. The cutting will be let to whoever applies that is capable. It is the intention of the company to ran the big mill night and day jußt as soon as it can be pro perly fed with logs. The B. & S., will also open coal operations up Medix Run. Two drifts have already been putin and the busi ness of developing the coal industry will goon as rapidily as possible. So the outlook is for big business and a constant increase of it about Medix for years to come. And if found justifiable there is nothing to prevent the railroad going on over the water shed into the West Branch valley. In fact the acquisition of coal mines over along the West Branch by the B. & S., looks as though this extension was contemplated. THE CHRISTIAN* churches at Con stantinople, Turkey, and Yokalioma, Japan, have long used the Longman A; Martinez Paints lor painting their churches. Liberal contributions of L. & M. Paint will be giveu for such purpose wherever a church he located. F. M. Scofield, Harris Springs, S. 0., writes: "I painted our old homestead with L. & M. twenty-six years auo. Not painted since, looks better than houses painted in the last four years." W. 15. Barr, Charleston, W. Va., writes, "Painted Fraukenburg Bloek with L. & M., shows better than any buildings here have ever done; stands out as though varnished, and actual cost of paint was less than 31.20 per gallon. Wears and covers like gold." These Celebrated Paints are sold by U.S. Lloyd. 3 A man who can't talk and will talk should be muzzled. World'* Pair. Editor Pre9B: Between now and November voters will have ample opportunity to think about the tariff and come to a definite conclusion whether it is better to maintain the present form of indirect taxation and get most of the revenue for the govern ment through the custom house, or whether the people prefer direct taxation with an augmented in ternal revenue. The main issue between the two opposing political parties will concern the tariff ques tion. President Roosevelt says he wants the Republican platform to say exactly what the party intends to do regarding the tariff. lie' thinks it best to have a short plat form, and naturally it should be heartily in sympathy with the A(l --ministrtion. As Senator Lodge, of Mass., is to be chairman of the Committee on Resolutions, and as he dictated the tariff plank in the platform of the Massachusetts Re publicans, he can be relied upon to carry out the President's wishes. Senator Aldrich, R. 1., is engaged in assisting Senator Lodge in writ ing the tariff plank. Those who have kept abreast with the trend of affairs at home and abroad are confident that the leaders of the Republican party will agree to modify the tariff, or revise its schedules, at the next session of Congress, <; as circumstances may require." There is a strong feel ing in New England in favor of reciprocity with Canada, and a large number of manufacturers in Boston and vicinity have petition ed to that effect. But the trade between the Dominion and the Slates is constantly increasing and is now in a very healthy condition, and largely in favor of this country. New England being a manufacturing district wants free raw materials, and possibly some 1 way may be devised to accomplish that purpose. It is now plain that the great questions before the Am eiican people for future adjustment are the tariff, trusts, wages, ; domestic and foreign commerce and the merchant marine. These are j non-political, economic and social questions; of interest to all the' people who live beneath the stars and stripes. The trial of Gen. James N. Tvner, in connection with the Post OHice frauds, is proceeding slowly in this city before Mr. Justice Pritchard. Your correspondent looked into the court room yester- ! day and saw in a big stuffed arm- j chair containing a little old erna-; ciated, white-headed man, shielded by a screen from the spring-time ! breeze which came in through the | window. Several well dressed women sat near him, and now and j then a colored man brought him a glass of water. The General says! the strain is too much for liiin but ! he hopes to live long enough to hear the verdict. Thus far the evidence lias been technical, dry j and uninteresting to the last de-! gree. A fat and well fed clerk on ; the stand was trying to explain to the judge and jury the routine workings of a Division of the Post! Office Department. There has! been no startling evidence and none is expected. It will be, enough if tho Government makes | out a presumption of conspiracy, I or a neglect of duty. The people j of Washington are either too busy j or too indifferent to attend the trial. A few lawyers look into listen to the wranglings of the op-; posing counsel. Gen. Tvner was once a Congressman and then a member of Grant's Cabinet. •JLf. atT"TT77JTZ ■■ '.MUM ir.-T'-fT^ r^MTi White Lead and Zinc arc conceded to be essential to a first-class ready-mixed paint, but they must be thoroughly combined and used in the proper proportion to secure the best results.
