Mrs. John Gauntz, left last Sunday to visit her daughter Mrs. Slocum at Buffalo. County Treasurer Walter Youthers was looking after business here last Saturday. Miss Jean McNarney is able to walk without the aid of a crutch, after a long illness. Mr. Ralph Goodall, of Driftwood at tended Easter services in Emporium on Sunday. Miss Jettie Wiley is staying with Mrs. F. H. Norris during her husband's stav at Buffalo Hospital. R. H. Ilirseh is comfortably located in the house recently erected by Mr. Kelly on Chestnut street. Mrs. Elizabeth Howard returned last Friday from Emporia, Fla , where she has passed several months. Harry Derby came over from Olean on Saturday and spent Sunday with his parents and many friends here. Jos Strayer, of Sinnamahoning, was shaking hands with his f riends at this end of the county on Monday. E. H. Gregory and family have moved into the house on Fourth street recently remodeled by Mr. Auchu. Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson, hsve rented their Portage farm and will live with Mrs. Winfield, at Wiley bridge. Mrs. Goldie Lyons came over from Buffalo on Saturday and spent Easter with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Lyons. Miss Ada Hockley came up from Williamsport on Monday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. Iv. Hockley a few days. Mrs. E. C. Davison, who is spending part of her time at Johnsonburg with her husband visited at her home here a few days last week. Mr. B. W. Green and wife and Miss Alice Montgomery returned on Sun das from Emporia, Fla., where they had been visiting for several months. Mrs. Smith accompanied her hus band, Dr. Smith, to Buffalo Hospital and will remain there during the Dr's confinemen, from the effects of an op eration. Oliver W. Grimm, Editor of the Anstin Republiban was in town on Monday evening and made us a short visit. We found Mr. Grimm a very pleasant gentleman. Anna May Strait, daughter of E. G. Strait has been very low withdiphtheria for two weeks at her homo at 37 N. Brady street, Dußoiss but is some better at this writing, we are glad to note. Mrs. Sisson, of Erie, wife of the Sen ator from that district, visited Mrs. Laura Bryan last Thursday and Friday. She was enroute for Ilarrisbuig to re main with the Senator until close of session. I Geo. P. Jones spent Sunday with his J family nt this place. Miss Ada Kissel, of Sterling Run, is visiting in town to-day. Benj Lord has moved his family from this place to Sterling Run. Miss Eva Leet returns to Wilson College at Chamberoburg this week. P. H. Fitzpatrick was in town over Sunday. Pat is now located at Cam eron. Chief of Police Mundy is again on deck after a severe illness of about two weeks. J. L. Johnson of Gibson township was transacting business iu the county seat on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Howard and Mr. and Mss. Henry Auchu have returned from Wisconsin. Chas. Cummerford has been laid up the past week the result of a sprain re ceived while playing. Miss Bisson who was taken sick while visiting her sister at this place is able to be about again. Celo Dalrymple, of Galeton, is visit ing her unyle Wm. Dalrymple and family at this place this week. John Exstrom, of St. Marys, was shaking hands with old friends in town on Tuesday and took in the ball at the opera house in the evening. MiBS Dransfield a young lady em ploped at the Climax Powder Co., office who has bean sick for some time is much better at this writing. Miss Isabel Johnson, ofSterling Run, departed last Wednesday morning on mail for Pittsburg, Pa., to visit re latives and friends, and on her way back will visit in Altoona, Pa. Mr. Goodnough, of Cornwall-on-the- Hndson, who has been visiting his brother C.;J. Goodnough at this place, the past week, made the PRESS a short call on Tuesday. Mr. Goodnough re turned to his home on Wednesday. S. J. Pee, of Chicago, has returned to Emporium for the summer season. Mr. Fee is agent for a Baltimore firm and sells fruits and green goods and our people may now look for every thing in his line. Mai. Terwilliger,who is employed by the Climax Powder Co., had the mis fortune to let a 500 pound cask fall on his left hand Monday afternoon badly squeezing that member. Dr. Baker gave him attention. A curious feature of the fire-works program during the dedication cere monies at the World's Fair, St. Louis, will be the release of a large balloon made of the finest and lightest oil silk, aud filled with the best quality of hy drogen. To this balloon will be attach ed, under proper safeguards to prevent injury, a notice direcied to the finder that on return of the notice to the Ex position officials a season pass to the Fair will be given. It is estimated that the balloon under moderately favorable conditions will travel a thousand miles before returning to earth. It is likely that much interest will be displayed on the night of the balloon's release as to the direction of the wind and the local ities in the fortunate direction will be on the lookout for the treasure-laden messenger.
