The elocutionary and musical enter tainment given at the opera house on Tuesday evening, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Society, was well attended and very cordially received by our people. The elocutionary num bers rendered by Miss Jones, who kindly volunteered her services, were of a high order and demonstrated the fact that the young lady has before her a bright future. We doubt very much if her equal has appeared before an Emporium audience. We hope our citizens may again be favored by Miss Jones during her next visit to Empo rium. The violin solos by Miss Grace Wal ker, as well as those by Miss McCaslin, were well received. The Quartette rendered some choice selections. Railroad News. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company will soon confine all the running of its fast freight lines over its own system. By the acquisition of the Western New York & Pennsylvania it now has a di rect line to Buffalo, and it is stated that the Empire Fast Freight line will be run over its own lines between Phila delphia, Erie and Buffalo Heretofore a considerable portion of this business has gone over other lines, especially the Lehigh Valley. »% The acquisition by the Pennsylvania Railroad of the Western New York & Pennsylvania and its merger with the Allegheny Valley into one grand divis ion of the system have necessitated the bringing of the Western New York & Pennsylvania up to the physical standard of the Pennsylvania, and as the result of careful inspections made by the officials from time to time nu merous changes have been recom mended and will be made in the near future. A number of the heavier grades on the lines are to be reduced, some of the worst curvatures eliminat ed, and new and heavier steel bridges are to be erected at various points. From Brockton to Buffalo 90-pound steel rails are to be put down and the entire road placed in condition for heavy and quick travel. The Swedish Vote Not for Sale. The Emery leaders have declared their intention to buy the Swedish vote when the National boodle collection comes in, but this gives no concern. The Swedes are Republicans, and are generally reliable men. They come to this country to earn a living by honest labor. They settle on some of our apparently worthless land and convert it into fertile and valuable farms. They neither solicit votes nor sell them. The Swedes are noted, even among North ern nationalities, as being faithful and reliable in the discharge of their obliga. tions. That is why the Swede girl is among the most valued household help where confidence is essential and promptness and industry desirable. The same is true of Swede labor on the farm, in the shop and in many of the scientific pursuits. There is of course what might be called a scum popula tion among the Swedes, but there is no nationality in the world in which there is so little of it. Among such a people the man who tries to buy votes is on a fool's errand. The Swedish vote will naturally goto Mr. Sibley. He couldn't get it for money, and he woldn't do so if he could. He will get it because his party is the party of prosperity and has done the most that has been done in this country to make it the best country in the world for an honest poor man to make a living in. Their vote will be given him with increased willingness by the fact that he has in his employ a large number of Swedes, among whom are all ranks, from well paid house help to high salaried ex perts in the scientific department of his extensive works. These men, in their feelings toward their generous employ er, which they do not hesitate to ex press to their Swedish relatives and friends, have given Mr. Sibley such a reputation all over the district as will get for him the vote of every intelli gent Swede in it.—Kane Republican. Uncle Bam lias taken first place in the banking business also, with a capital of 88,0(53,000,000, against 87,000,000,00(1 in England. When a candidate .professes opposition to the use of money in elections and at the same time sends out letters begging for money to help elect him, how is he to keep the voters from being corrupted, except by salting it down in his own pocket where it will do the most, good ? Bradford Star. A few months ago Lew Emery told the people of this district in a rather author itative manner to nominate and elect Mr. Sibley. A short time thereafter he landed at home from the Pacific coast and changed his programme by issuing his order that Sibley be defeated. We have tried to recall a case where any reported boss in the Republican party ever as sumed such authority. If Lewis, the brazen face, should ever become a boss, his party would be like the slaves under the Dred Scott decision. They would "have no rights which a white man is bound to respect."—Bradford Star. Candidate Emery enjoys the distinc tion of being the only man in the oil business who runs a "company" store. His large mercantile establishment at Bradford has made him a sort of local John Wanamaker. He is a dealer in nearly every line of known merchandise and a competitor with nearly every branch of trade and business in the city. Brad ford merchants are not banking very much upon what he says in regard to trusts and monopolies. Actions speak louder than words, and Emery is anti monopoly only to those trusts and busi ness organizations in which he is not di rectly interested.— Oil City Derrick. An exchange says that the Pennsyl vania Railroad Company is about to tackle a job to a certain extent that the general government nor any sovereign State has yet undertaken, and that is the suppression of the tramp nuisance along its lines. The road will police its lines with a thousand men to take care of the hobo element that is becoming more and more aggressive. Heretofore the train men have had to look after these very undesirable citizens, and every State in the Union should bring them up with a short turn. The company only asks that its men be invested with authority all along the line to make arrests. In every case where the present Dem ocratic candidate for Congress in this district has interested himself in politics, it was always in opposition to Republican candidates and the Republican party. In 1881 he opposed the Republican candi date for United States Senator and State Treasurer ; the next year he worked hard to defeat General Beaver for Governor; Bobert E. Pattison, the Democrat, was supported strongly by him for Governor in 18' JO. In 1890, the straddle candi date was opposed to McKinley and Ho bart. Such is the political record of the man who is asking Republicans to vote for him on the ground that he will save their party. —Bradford Star. Man is a jealous animal and thinks others do what he wants to do himself. The man who wants to be a party boss believes the party can be bossed. The fellow who would buy votes believes the mass of voters can be bought. Dishonest men in business say that every man has his price. Lewd and lecherous men scout the idea of the general purity of women. The cry of stop thief comes loudest from the fellow who stole the goods. " Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh," and this should warn us of the true character of the political hypo crite who distributes morals with his mouth while he gathers boodle with both hands from all over the States, except Dakota; and that is not his fault.— Oil City Blizzard. Billy Bryan. Let me ask you, Billy Bryan, why the mischief you are tryin' to convince the people that you'er not a crank? Don't you know it's very foolish on your part to be so mulish ovor that confounded little silver plank? You went howling through creation that destruction and starvation was the certain fate of every mother's son if the following election didn't go in your direction with your crazy notions of 16 to 1. But you see you were not in it, not one single bless ed minute, when the voters really set tled down to biz; they were not so green and silly as you seemed to think them, Billy, when you tried to fill them up on silver fizz. And I'll tell you, Billy Bryan, that I really think you're lvin' when you say our party princi ples are trash; for you've putin every hour since McKinley was in power fill ing up your pockets with gold stand ard cash. Now to be consistent, honey, you must give up all that money which you made when politics were out of joint. Do we think we see you do it? ? —! ! —? ?—Not a penny—it you knew it —would you give up. Do the voters see the point? If this little object les json doesn't set the people guessin' till j their Yankee wits see how things ought j to be, we'll own up we were mistaken, | that our faith is sadly shaken, and hang J our harps upon a weeping: willow tree. —X Quaver in Hillside (Mich.)
