Webster's Prediction.
More than fifty years ago Daniel
Webster said:
That is the truest American policy which shall
most usefully employ American capital and
American labor anil best sustain the whole
American population. Agriculture, commerce
and manufacturers will prosper together or lan
guish together.
By Webster's test, which, then, is
the "true American policy," Protec
tion or Free Trade ? In 1892 we had
Protection, and American capital and
American labor both were fully and
remuneratively employed. From 1893 !
to 1897 we had a Free-Trade President 1
and a Free-Trade policy culminating
in a Free-Trade law, and American !
workmen sat in idelness, while Ameri- j
can capitalists husbanded their re
sourses and guarded their idle money j
as best they could. Since 1897 we ;
have had Protection again, and there
is demand and employment for every
dollar of American capital and for
every American working man. Web
ster's prediction has proved true.
Under Free-Trade, agriculture, com
merce and manufacturers languish to
gether; under Protection they all pros
per together.—American Economist.
When a newspaper attacks the hired
gir), just because she works for a living,
and calls her a '-kitchen mechanic," it
is time that that element of the com
munity should rise up in arms. The
hired girl or any other working girl is
far his or their superiors. It is just as
honorable to work in a kitchen as it is
to sit in a parlor with your legs crossed
just because "Pap" has money. This
would be a great country if all were
wealthy and no one to hire to do tho
work. A girl who has the snap and
energy to earn a livlihood at honorable
employment, be it in the kitchen or the
store, the office or tho dressing room,
is just as good as any millionaire who
drives a bobtail team or any man who
belongs to the best social clubs.—Frank
lin Leader.

Moiliep's friend
Those who do know about it
wonder how they ever got along \

young wife. It has preserved her | |
girlish figure and saved her much § j
suffering. It is an external lini- B i

absolutely no danger of upsetting |
the system as drugs taken intern- 1

rubbed into the abdomen to soften v
and strengthen the muscles which fe j
are to bear the strain. This means p
