BRIEF HENTION. About eight hundred people attended the baccalaureate services at M. E. Church last Sunday evening. Now that spring is at hand, accord ing to the weather prophet, you must have a new sping suit and the place to get your money's worth is at N. Seger's. Peter Van BracUel, the man who came from Porto Rico this Spring, has gone back home. He says it is too cold here, and some of the people do not show fair treatment to new Americans. C. R. Baird & Co.'s chief engineer, and other experts, are making exten sive examinations of the coal lands near this place. We hope their work may result to the benefit of Cameron county. The People's National Bank is being organized at Coudersport. No one person or family will be allowed to take a large block of stock until the people have an opportunity to sub scribe. There was a man in our town who was wonderous wise, he moved into the "woolly west" to capture a big prize; but when he found the prize was won, with all his might and main, he scratch ed around for money to get back home again. Mr. Fred Herngrist, formerly of this place, and Miss Minnie Anderson, for merly of Gardeau, were married on April 28th at Johnstown. They will, for the present, take up their resicence at Qrenier, Pa. Wo wish the young couple a happy and prosperous future. The heavy wind Tuesday evening scalped a few chimneys around town, and gave a number of our business men employment cleaning their win dows, the wind having completely be smeared them with mud. For about forty-five minutes the gale was terrific, and it is a great wonder that much damage was not done. Take your own census before the cen sus taker comes around. Do it this spring. Set down the number of acres in each crop, quantity grown and its value. Put down also numbers of live stock, value of products from dairy, poultry, etc. liet it be in black and white when the census agent appears and then you won't have to guess and the 1900 census won't be guess work.— Hammondsport Perald. The extension of the New York and Pennsylvania railroad from Millport to Shinglo House will in all probability be completed this season. All is in readiness to do the work within three months after the right of way is secured. The survey lias been made and the line located to Ceres, four miles farther and will be continued an additional five miles to Portville, where it will connect with the Pennsylvania's newly acquired line from Buffalo to Emporium. The Goodyears have gangs of men workingon their branch railroad, which will run from Bailoy Run, Potter coun ty, to the P. & E. road, at Sinnama honing. The engineers have nearly completed the survey of the line, which is about sixteen miles long, they only having about four miles yet before they reach the terminus. The graders are at work on the Bailey Run line, while other gangs are locating the camps, etc. Operations on the line have been in progress about two weeks. The Good years by this line will pass through the timber tracts on the Sinnamahoning, and also expect togo into the coal tracts along Dent's Run. —Austin Au tograph. Uncle Sam's family is becoming a large one. There were but 5,300,000 people in America when the century opened. France had five times as many people; Germany and even Austria, had lour times America's population; Italy had three times as many, and so had Great Britian. Even Spain had double our number of people, and little Portugal was almost our rival in num bers. We have more people now than any European nation except Russia whicli alone leads us. We have as many people as live in all Great Britain and France combined. We have one half more people than Germany. We have, practically, 75,000,000 people in tho United States, and 10,000,000 more in our new possessions.
