Balcom, we regret to learn, is confined to her home, suffer ing from the effects of la grippe. V. M. Grinolds and W. Barrows, of Austin, were noticed among the out of town guests at the Hamilton's ball. Ed. Yeagle, the popular clerk at .Rockwell's drug store, is visiting at Williamsport this week and having his ■eyes treated. Mrs. R. J. Henderson and sister Miss Genevieve Shaffer, are visiting friends at Emporium and Driftwood, Pa., this week.—Renovo Record. Miss Martha Kaye, who is attending commercial college at Williamsport, came home last Thursday and remained until Monday, visiting her parents. Chap. Rich, well known in Empo rium, died last week at Orlando, Fla. He is one of the well known Rich brothers. His remains were taken to his old home in New York for inter ment. Thos. Joyce, one of the faithful em ployees of the Climax Powder Com pany, was a welcome PRESS visitor on Saturdary evening. He will read this journal for another year. B. A. Beal, of Driftwood, was visit ing on town on Saturday and called to see the PRESS. We wore pleased to meet this excellent young man, a grand-son of our old friend Amos Barber. We are pleased to note that George Bupp is recovering from his recent illness and is able to be on the road with his excellent line of cigars. None -are better than "Bupp's L. A. W," and we know it. A pleasant party of Austin ladies and gentlemen took in the dance at this place last Thursday evening. Among the party were Misses Rose Ryan and Eva Foreman, and Messrs. Geo. Mohan, Fred Pomeroy and Fred Hall. Miss Jennie Hanscom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Hanscom, and Mr. and Mrs. A. J. DeShetler, all of Sinnc mahoning, Pa., were united in mar riage at that place, Wednesday of this week. The happy groom was form erly a resident of this borough and his many Smethport friends will unite with the Democrat in wishing him and tiis charming bride a full measure of happiness in their new relations.— -Smethport Democrat. Josiah Howard is now sojourning in southern states and will arrive home about the 10th inst. Mr. and Mrs. John O' Byrne returned last Saturday from visiting friends and relatives at Washington, Pa. Walker and family, at this place. John Hennessey was called to Drift wood yesterday on account of the j death of his father, James Hennessey, j aged 68 years. Mrs. Kate Haines and Mrs. Josie Y. Walteas, of Philadelphia, visited the Ladies Temple of Golden Eagles, on Monday evening. Arch F. Andrews has accepted a position as clerk in J. H. Day's grocery. Arch is an old and experienced hand j and will make a popular clerk. Edward Moore, who has been seri ously ill at the residence of his mother, on West Fifth street, we are pleased to hear is some better this morning. Mrs. Thos. Gallagher gave a pro gressive whist Tuesday afternoon to her lady friends. Spreads were laid for tweuty-five and elegant refresh ments served. Ralph Hemphill who went to Far randsville on Monday to accept a position in a cigar factory, returned home last night badly crippled up with rheumatism. John E. Smith, of Sterling Run, was a PRESS visitor yesterday. Mr. Smith has been, since 1870, engaged in the mercantile business, and is one of our solid business men. Mr. J. C. Bonliam,of Emporium, was a business caller on Monday Mr. R. Seger, the Emporium tailor, was the guest of friends in town over Sun day.—St. Marys Gazette. Attorney S. W. Smith and wife, of Port Allegany, visited in Emporium yesterday, guests of B. W. Green and family, while on their way south to ' spend the month of March in Florida and Cuba. E. C. Davey came down from Good year, one day last week and called at the PRESS office for the purpose of pushing the date ahead another year on his paper, and subscribing for an other copy, one year, to an absent loved one. N. L. Hanscom, of Marshfield, Pa., and \V. N. Hanscom, of Watrous, Pa., were in Emporium last Friday, accom- j panied by their brother, 'Squire Hans com, of Sinnemohning, where they j attended the wedding of Miss Hanscom ; and Mr. DeShetler. A large party of Renovo people were attendance at the Hamilton's ball, last Thursday evening, among whom we noticed Messrs. Jas. L. Norie, Berry Albright, M. R. Nicholas, M. J. Haley, Philip Hoffman, Clias. Gordon, Ed. j Crowley, It. M. Swartz, A. A. Spangle, j and Chas. E. Saltsman. Miss Ada Hockley returned home last Saturday to visit her parents, Hon. I. K. Hockley and family, until next Saturday, when she goes to Wil liamsport to prepare for a year's.trip to Europe, accompanying William Howard and wife. They expect to bo absent about one year and will visit many countries in the old world. Mrs. F. D. Leet was taken to Presby terian Hospital, at Philadelphia, last week, to undergo an operation for appendicitis. She was accompanied by Mrs. L. K. Huntington, her sister, and Mrs. Wm. Haekenberg. We are informed, at this writing, that while this excellent lady stood the operation performed Tuesday, she is, neverthe less, in a very precarious condition. Miss Gertrude A ma, one of Austin : s very charming young ladies, was the guest of Miss Golda Lyons, hist Thurs day and Friday. She is an employe of the Austin Autograph, and, of course, while in town it would be very unnat ural for her not to stroll into a news paper establishment, and accordingly we were honored by a very pleasant call from this very excellent lady, ac companied by Miss Lyons.
