Postmaster Scott, of Williamsport, was in attendance at the Teachers' Institute on Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Thos. McGrain, and Mrs. N. J, Barner, of Third street, went to Buffalo Wednesday morning on a two days' shopping expedition. Ex-County Commissioner John A. Wykoff, of Grove, visited in town on Tuesday, attending the institute. He remained for Gen. Gordon's lecture. The many friends of Miss Rose Ritchie, who was suffering from an at tack of typhoid fever, will be pleased to learn that she is rapidly recovering. Messrs. Frank B. Baird, of Buffalo, and C. R. Baird, of Philadelphia, were in town over Sunday, inspecting their plant which is now in lull operation at this place. Capt. C. F. Barclay and wife of Sin lianiohing left for New Mexico on Monday, where Mr. Barclay and other Cameron county capitalists are engag ed in gold mining. Miss Maine Cleary, one of our popular school teachers, who has been under going a siege of typhoid fever for the past three weeks, has so far recovered from her serious illness as to be out. Geo. W. Huntley, Jr., of Driftwood, transacted business in Emporium on Tuesday. Like all honest Democrats, he cannot swallow the anti-expansion crusade against President McKinley's policy. Hon. Emerson Collin's, lecture on "Grant, the Soldier" last Monday evening was an eloquent address. Mr. C., is one of the most pleasant speakers in the state and never fails to please his hearers. The many friends of Rev. W. R. Mc- Neil enjoyed his visit to Emporium and hope he returns again in the near future. All classes and creeds are deeply attached to the venerable gen tleman and wish hira many years of usefulness. The services at Baptist church last Sunday evening were quite largely attended. The Masonic frater nity attended in a body out of respect to Rev. McNeil, who is an honored member of the fraternity. W. O. Mankey was in town over Sunday. Lyman Wiley called to see the PRKSS yesterday. Geo. Walker, Jr. took in the sights at Buffalo this week. Andrew Denny, of Driftwood, was in town last evening. J. M. Harris, of Olean, visited Jasper Harris Sunday and Monday in town. Grant S. Allen attended a meeting of the Shriners at Williamsport yester day. Chas. Pealer has returned from the hospital. His injured eye is much better. Mrs. C. E. Cobb, of Sherman, N. Y., is visiting her mother and sisters at this place. W. W. Mattson, ofßidgway, Pa., has been guest of B. W. Tulis returned last Friday from visiting friends in New York and en joying a few days amid scenes of olden times. Mrs. Herbert Day is visiting her parents at Friendship, N. Y., where she will remain for the next three weeks. W. P. Lloyd is officiating in Western Union office this week. Will is one of the best operators in the country and a genial gentleman. J. H. Swain is visiting relatives in Chicago taking a much needed rest from his duties as clerk for the W. N. Y. & P. Ry., at this place. B. W. Green, Josiah Howard, Harry Hemphill, C. L. Butler and ye editor attended the Republican rally at Ridg way last Monday evening. Jos. Rank, better known as "Trilby," has accepted a position as porter at the Commercial House, St. Marys, and left for that place on Sunday. Thos. More and Frank Hoag, of Sterling Run, were in town on Mon day, in attendance at the Republican reception to the "Spellbinders." Mrs. Dr. Heilman returned on Mon day from visiting friends in William sport and vicinity, after having attend ed the funeral of the Doctor's mother, at that place. D. F. Mulcahey, who has been seri ously ill for several days, at the resi dence of his parents, near Emporium, is better at this writing, under Dr. Bardwell's careful treatment. Lyman Wiley is spending his vaca tion with Emporium friends and "by gravey" those champion checker play ers will have to look out for their laurels. Fred Julian has returned from an extended trip in the interest of the Climax Powder Company. We under stand he secured many very large fat orders. W. M. Swartz has returned from the wilds of Potter county and says he will stay at home now. He intends to keep track of Harry Lloyd's big hunting stories now—the best he ever heard since he strung six patridges at one shot. B. V. Wykoff, of Sinnemahoning, has begun operations for Foresman & Williams, of Williamsport. A standard guage railroad will be built, connect ing with the Philadelphia & Erie R. R. at Hyner. The timber will be trans ported to Williamsport mills by rail.— Renovo News. Pap Blodget, Grand Chief Annanias of the International Organization of Prevaricating Associations, was in town on Monday preparing charges against Lucifer, because of his forcible ejectment of a beloved member of the Sinnemahoning Liars Club from the sulphuric kingdom. Rev. Robt. McCaslin, pastor of the Presbyterian church at this place, went to Renovo on Saturday to administer spiritual comfort to the sorely afflicted family of Mr. A. Y. Jones, whose daughter was so foully murdered in Baltimore last Friday. He also as sisted at the funeral services which were held at that place on Tuesday. The many friends of ex-County Treasurer W. L. Thomas will be pained to learn that this genial gentleman is suffering from partial paralysis of the right side of his face, the result of the terrible accident he met with four years ago. We sincerely hope our good and true friend may speedily re cover. The reliable D. Burlingame, of Sizer ville, is as regular as the sun in appear ing at the proper time to pay his sub scription. John Bossie fell while alighting from Erie mail trail this morning and came near going under the ear wheels. Mrs. Wm. Robinson and children, of Fifth street, have returned home from Williamsport where they have been visiting relatives and friends. David Kirk, of Pittsburg, Pa., was in Emporium this week, looking after business interests, in connection with Climax Powder Company's works. We understand the firm will double the capacity of their plant at this place in order to meet their demands, thereby giving employment to many more hands. The Climax Powder Company now stands at the head of the list as manufacturers of explosives and their rapidly increasing business, extensive works and reliable hustling mode of transacting business adds very mater ially to the business interests of Em porium. Sinnemahoning Liars Club. Editor Preßß: The Sinnemahoning Liars Club held an interesting session last night, Ilarve Smith holding the power of authority. Gundy Loguc was suspended because he couldn't keep hiiJ end up with John Johnson, while Jos. Summerson and E. F. Smith were given six days at hard labor husk ing corn for the club's winter supply of juice. Vine Ilanscom has flunked; he says ho won't tell any more ''whoppers" and that he will vote the Prohibition ticket this fall; the chair appointed a committee to report next meeting as to his sanity. A challenge was received from James O'Brien which was accepted on condition that Ike Bowen be barred out of all the clubs in the county. A recess of one hour was ordered to let the braves perform a snake dance over a dis tiguished member who was taking a Kip Van Winkle nap, in Joe M's. sitting room. After refreshments that revived old memories we proceeded to initiate Sheridan Mead and Clyde Jordan, who both road the goat together. Frank Buck, of Driftwood, happened along and as this is the goat used by Peck's bad boy in his maneuvers with his pa and the hired girl, he immediately proceeded tumble his namesake into a corner. The load on his back gave lorce to his awful rush and when Tap Blodget sorted out the conglomeration in the corner they all four felt that Buck beer was indellibly stamped upon the after-deck of their respective personalities. Part of our club scrubbed out the bar-room for (Jeorge yesterday in consequence of which Pap Blodgett was locked up in the ante-room of the elub and had to be put through a recuperative test before lie was placed in the club ambulance and taken home. Mrs. Isaac Barber died at his homo in this place on Wednesday morning the 11th inst., of old age and a general breaking down of her constitution. "Aunt Eliza had been in feeble health for some time and her demise was uot unexpected. The big saw mill that has been idle for three months will resume business this week and it is expected will run all winter The railroad into Jerry Bun is about completed and logs are being brought from that source. The new pier being placed under the railroad bridge is a fine and substantial piece of masonry. The work is nearly completed and after this is finished a new abutment will be placed under the north end of the bridge. The kindling-wood factory is now in successful operation and several carloads of the finished product has been shipped.
