I 1 CAMERON COUNTY PRESS, THURSDAY, JANUARY 19. 1899. Mr. Bryan should be careful how he expands in his anti-expansion flights. President McKinley is a various and versatile politician He was against the war before the war; and he may be against expansion if he shall And the path too costly or difficult to follow. Should Mr. Bryan by the ides of March find himself on the same side of the fence as the President he would not only have wasted his breath but he would be minus an issue. And would not that be saddening ?—Philadelphia Record. Philadelphia Press of Jan. 1, 189$: The Ohio senatorial contest will very nearly monopolize the political interes' which centers around the opening of the new year. Today will probably de termine whether the opposition to Mr. Hanna is simply thundering in the in dex without much real subsistence. By every code of political honor, as well as by every consideration of party in terest and public advantage, Mr. Han na is entitled to the election. He was the sole nominee of the state conven tion for the iilace. He was the only candidate through the campaign. He can bp defeated only by perfidy, which must be condemned on every recogniz ed principle of honorable political ac tion. Looking at the matter on still higher grounds, Mr. Hanna ought to be elected because of his great part in shaping the course of the Republican party which resulted in the triumph of 1896, and because he is needed in its further councils. There Is no ground upon which the warfare against him can be justified. Philadelphia Press, Jan. 6, 1898: The senatorial contest now proceed ing in Ohio involves a good deal more than the election or defeat of Mark Hanna. It concerns the honor of men and of parties and the right of candi dates to accept a trust under a distinct pledge, and then when elected to prove unfaithful to it. These are more im portant than the success of any man In this instance or in any other contest. * * * There may be private griev ances In Ohio, of which the public know nothing. But politics is no place for grievances. Party organization would be impossible if every man were to seek revenge for what he conceived to be his private wrongs. The place to have fought Mr. Hanna was In the state con vention of last year, and before the Re publican party had endorsed him for senator, or else through an open and manly repudiation of the party declara tion. That endorsement having been given and accepted, it should now be adhered to, and the Republican name saved from the claim of perfidy and dis honor. Philadelphia Press, Jan. 9, 1S98: The clouds which have overhung the Ohio senatorial election seem to be breaking up. and there appears now fo be a fair prospect of Senator Hanna'- election. The actual recapture of twe of the bolters who have come over tc his column will have a moral weight greater even than mere number. It shows the effect of the awakened public sentiment, and will dispirit and dis courage the opposition. Mr. Hanna bah made his enemies. No man could per form the great work hr- has done during the last three years without making them. But his personality is only a secondary matter. He Is the represent atlve of the party and the embodiment of its will anfl its unity. He was made its candidate and was accepted as such The fight against him was not open ana frank, but stealthy and insiduous. It involved a violation of every code of personal and political honor, and thij attempt to betray and defeat the party and to jeopardize every high public in terest for mere personal revenge and malevolence has arroused a tempest of indignation before which the eonspira tors will find it hard to stand. Philadelphia Press, Jan. 12, 1S98: Senator Hanna wins his fight. * • • The defeat of the shameless conspiracy which trampled on all political princi ple and disregarded all public honor is immeasurably more important than any individual fate. There is no measure of condemnation too severe for the treachery of this plot. « • * He was made the candidate of his party by a unanimous vote. There was no other aspirant. The conspirators were pledged to bis support. If there is any code of political integrity or personal honor among men it bound all Republicans to accept a judgment thus pronounced and action thus sealed. * * * The election of Mr. Hanna retrieves what was a most deplorable and dan gerous situation. His defeat, in view of all it involved, would have been a great misfortune. It would have jeopardiz -.1 Republicanism in the senate when it needs to gain instead of being able to suffer losses. « * » And the Philadelphia Press is but one of a number of papers which allow thei" political news and opinions to be shaped by the Wanamaker advertisements as though he owned them outright.
