8 THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBUWS. i THE COLUMBIAN. HLOOMSI5URG, PA. TIJUKSDAV, OCTOnEK 21. 1!I0!) Text Book for Criminal Apprentices. The police of New York found upon a burglar, arrested by them, a treatise on safe cracking that is said to be the most remarkable document that has ever fallen into their hands. The contents are so well compiled that the police un hesitatingly declare the author a past grand master in his profes sion, and are somewhat anxious to find out just how many copies a:e in circulation throughout the coun try. For the most part, the manu script is in the yegs code, a lingo freely used by thieves the country over. It describes the two kinds of safes recognized by the profession, namely the fire-proof and the burglar-proof,' asserting, however, that there is no genuine burglar-proof safe, and that the kind that are drill-proof are only called so by courtesy, Miuute directions for cracking a safe are given, together with diagrams to illustrate the treatise. By II. A. Surface, State Zoologist. HANDPl'RAYKRS I"OR 1'RUIT TKKF.S. State Zoologist Surface was ask ed for his opin'on as to the effect iveness of a certain type of hand spraying apparatus for fruit trees. His answer was as follows: "I would say that this apparatus A-ould be all right for spraying very small cr young trees p'ul also low plants and bushes, but if you have trees of much size to spray, it would prove entirely inefficient and unsatisfactory. It is not possible to stand 011 the ground and spray even a full-sized peach tree with such an outfit. If you are willing to climb into the tree by means of a ladder, and will get the nozzle close to the branch you are spray ing, you can spray such a tree with this outfit, but you must carry the apparatus into the tree and it will be slow work. You do not state how many, nor what size, trees you wish to spray, consequently, I can not give you the proper answer as to the exact kind of sprayer that will best suit your needs. How ever, I would advise you to write to several manufacturers for de scriptive catalogs, stating fully your needs." REMEDY TOR FLEAS. "The best remedy for fleas in a hcusc," says State Zoologist H. A. Surlace, in reply to a number of letters seeking information on the subject, is "fumigation with hydro cyanic acid gas, the same as for all other household pests. This will, of course, destroy flies, roaches, etc., as well as the fleas. This, however, must be done with con siderable care, because the gas is deadly, and besides, rather expen sive. Une ot the simple and less expensive but slower methods of ridding a house of fleas is to do it by means of sticky fly paper. If the fly paper is placed beneath chairs, tables and stands where it will not be in the way of anyone walking, it will be all right. I should warn you, however, that if a cat happened to get 011 such a paper, it would cause a lively time and quite a mussed-up animal. It has been said that if pieces of meat that are lean are placed in the mid dle of the floor the fleas will jump toward them. However, the jani tors of a certain seminary cleaned the parlors of fleas by wrapping sticky fly paper around his rubber boots with the sticky side out wards, and walking slowly through the rooms. "The nature of the flea is to jump toward, instead of away troni, a moving object. Perhaps the drawing of paper slowly across the carpet a number of times would kill many of them. The chief thing is to remove the fundamental cause of the plague of fleas, which is generally due to infested cats or dogs. Have the animals sleep on a cloth or carpet 111 a box outdoors, and at least every other morning remove the carpet and beat it on the ground some distance from the house. The larva of the flea lives in dust and all cracks should be thoroughly cleansed aud washed with a four per cent, creolin in wa ter; or, in oilier words, a solution of water and creolin containing one part of creolin in twenty-five parts of water, and then the cracks should be filled with a mixture of melted bees wax aud resin. "I; carpets are discarded and rugs used instead, it will help to get rid of both fleas and carp.t beetles. The rugs or carpets should be taken out frequency and the floor scrubbed with tli; creolin solution." CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR CONVEN TION.
