State Treasurer Berry Favors Creasy's Re-Election to the Legislature. Chester. Pa., March iS, 190S. Hon. Wm. T. Creasy, Catawissa, Pa. My Dear Farmer: I am glad to know that you are again a candi date for election to the legislature. I sincerely trust that you will be elected. Your long term of aggressive work for honesty and decency in Pennsylvania politics, has been one of the brightest spots on our state history. I believe that your work was a large factor in making the revolution possible that enabled us to expose the grafters at the Capi tol. Wishing you success, I remain, Yours truly, Wm. H. Ierry. GILLETTE ELECTROCUTED. Chester Gillette, who murdered his sweetheart, Grace Brown, more than two years ago in New York state, was electrocuted at Auburn on Monday. A final appeal was made to Governor Hughes, but he refused to interfere. Gillette went out boating with the girl, and re turned alone, saying that the boat had capsized and she was drowned. Bruises on her head and other evi dence led to his arrest and convict ion. He confessed just before his execution. V ery Respectfully, SCARLET WILL NOT BE DROPPED It is reported that James Scarlet will not participate in the future graft trials at Harrisburg. The machine leaders probably begrudge him the glory which dime to him out of the successful issue of the first case. In the report of the in vestigating committee the name of Mr. Berry was entirely omitted. In organizing for the trial James A. Stranahan, who had ably assisted in the investigation, was left out and a Republican hwyer of less ability substituted. Obviously the machine covets all the honors to be acquired from the litigation. Mr. Scarlet is a Republican, but not of the machine variety. His presence at the counsel table detracts from the glory of the machine. If Mr. Berry hat remained silent there would have been no investi gation and co trial. After his ex posure Governor Pennypacker and the Auditor General protested that his accusations were malignant lies. On the stump Governor Stuart de clared that while he didn't believe that any frauds had been perpetrat ed, he would nevertheless, order an investigation and all the other ora tors and newspapers of the party denounced Berry as a villifier of good and true men. But wheti the crimes were uncovered and conceal ment was no longer possible, the machine managers determined to make the most out of it for them selves. It is the selfish way of sel fish and dishonest men. But we don't believe that Mr. Scarlet will be left out of the next trial. Without him the last trial would have been a farce. Deputy Attorney General Cunningham, who wants to be a judge, was given every opportunity to exploit him self and Attorney General Todd usurped the right of the last speech to the jury which belonged to Scar let. But the people understand and ?ut the credit where it belongs and 'odd and Cunningham will not take the chances of failure in the next case. Mr. Scarlet may be dropped after that but he will not be dis turbed now. That would involve too great a danger of failure. The machine has bo alternative and it will make the most of the necessity. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. 1 1, between the hours of 2 o'clock ote Iyirl.v. commissioner and mv own business like very mucii to 00 so. l am very . . J" r3r Hess The Work of Congress. The first session of the Sixtieth congress is more than half finished and today there has been no single measure of public interest passed by the two houses and sent to the president for his approval. There have been some private pension bills, some joint resolutions, some matters of individual importance enacted into law, but absolutely not one single public measure has passed both houses. It might be said that this is not a matter to be charged against any political party. That, however, can only be said by people who do not understand pre sent congressional procedure. The house of representatives is absolute ly dominated by Speaker Cannon and the Messsrs. Dalzell, Payne and Hepburn. They can put leg islation through in 48 hours or they can delay it indefinitely. What they are doing now is to fight for delay. In the senate the Republi can majority is dominant and can do what it will. The rules there do provide for freedom of debate, but at the same time majority rule very properly is accepted. But neither in house nor senate has the Republican congress suc ceeded at the present moment in enacting one public law. It might be worth while for the newspapers of the country to demand some ex plauatiou of this singular lethargy. Johnstoivn Democrat. NOTICE.
