THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA. Six R. D, Holiday! Rural Carriers Are Happy Over New Rulingt. Henceforth the rural mail carrier is to have more holidays and he is rejoicing greatly thereat. The fol lowing letter issued by Postmaster General Cortelyou is the cause of the indelible smile on the faces of the boys that radiate from the Bloomsburg office : Order No. 5 Ordered, That hereafter service on all rural free delivery routes be suspended on New Year's day (January 1), Wash ington's birthday (February 22), Memorial or Decoration day (May 30), Independence day (July 4), first Monday in September, known as Labor day, and such day us the president may set apart as Thanks giving day in each calendar year. Gho. K. Coktklyou. Postmaster General. Denk & Company in ShenfFi Bands The office fixtures of B. V. Denk & Company, stock brokers of New York City, have been attached and will be sold at a constable's sale in the near future. The attachment is due to the fact that one of the many persons who are rumored to have lost much money through dealings with this concern, is en deavoring to recover at least a part of the money he lost. While the rumor is not being verified owing to the refusal of the men concerned to talk, it is said that Shamokin people have sunk a considerable sum of money in stock speculation through B. V. Denk & Co The office opened some time iu March and for some time the local speculators were reaping nice returns for their investments. Sev eral of the patrons cleared from $10 to $250 for one day's speculation. However, in June the trouble be gan to brew. The company did not make its payments as promptly as usual but gave supposedly gooa reasons. Last month the office changed names and B. V. Denk & Company suddenly was no more. Finally, about three weeks ago, no stock reports were received and not a word heard from the company. Then it was that the speculators began to investigate but all to no avail as the tracks of the missing brokers were covered up completely. As stated above, it is not known how much money was lost. One person is said to have sunk $900, another $700 and still another $500. Small loses from $10 to $100 are also reported. A person who seemed to be in a position to know, declared this morning that in his opinion at least $5,000 were lost. Sbamokia Daily News. . The firm operated in Bloomsburg for some time. The office here was clcssd two months ago owing, so the local representatives said, to lack of business. Surgery is to be used to cure bad boys of truancy. Chicago school authorities have discovered that boys get discouraged because they fall behind their classmates. The result is truancy. It is now pro posed to operate for the betterment of sight and hearing. Physicians claim they have discovered means by whlcli these two senses may be improved. 6r rather stiniuJated, g!v ' ing their possessor adcted advant ages, says an exchange. Game Will Be Abundant State Game Commission reports are that deer are more plentiful in Pennsylvania than they have, been for many years. Some of the game wardens report deer in local ities where there has been none of those animals for many years. The reports also indicate a large abund ance of wild turkeys aud pheasants and an unusually small quantity of quail. Symptom ot Uydrophjbia. Walch Ihe Eye and not the Mould of a Dog tor Warning. The Co'intry Calltnikr gi' cs tl e ' tollowing valuable advee: ''As dogs do not jerspire, the only relief they .seem to get when overheated is from inhaling cool air through their wide open mcuths in short, puffy brpaths. The friction between tongue and lips,, caused by their rapid, laborious breathing, produces saliva, which is sometimes ignorautly diagnosed as foam, one of he symptoms of hydrophobia. Many innocent victims have lost their lives on account of such stupidity. If your dog should feel ill, sick with some ordinary ailment, he will wag welcome to you with a sad, pitiful expression, looking up in quiringly, as if asking for help and relief. It it has come to the worst, aud he feels by instinct the germs of dreaded disease in his frame, his action will be entirely different. You will find him with low bent head, withholding his usual glad welcome, hardly noticing or glanc ing at you. If your eye meets his, the restless, nervous, strauge expression will startle you. The dog, feeling his doom, is con scious of approaching danger, aud would like to prepare and warn you. These unmistakable and easily re cognized signs should be watched closely and always heeded. Corner the dog at once, and with the help of a broom or barn fork, keep him at a safe distance until locked up. Mrs, Edwards Grows fat And Oheerful Mrs. Kate Kdwards' eyes have recently been troubling her, and on Saturday she called in an optician, who fitted her with gold frame glasses. They give her quite a matronly appearance. Mrs. Kdwards wanted to know how long the glasses would last and was told about three years. She made the optician promise that he would come at the end of that period and fit her another pair. Mrs. Kdwards has entirely given up the idea that Governor Penny packer will set the date for her execution and she is getting more cheerful aud growing more stout every day. The newspaper man looms liij and strong in our vigorous modem life, taking often a man's pirt on many fields to which duty lias sent him. Nut too frequently, he is pictured effectively and justly in fiction by a pen that has had its training in actual newspaper work the modern choo! of the novelist. We have a fine example of just thir sort ol intelligently vivid character drawing in a new story of action, "The Fortress," by a young newspaper man, Will Levington Comfort This strong, human novel appears complete in the September iue of "I.ipp'ncoll's Magtiine." Mr. Comfort won his spurs in ihe Slates, and when he left the office of the I'it'sbu'g Dispatch" to go to Manchuria as war cor respondent he was chock-full of energy arid bristling with xi'rrience. Of course, he succeeded, and all who follow the news col umns will read with fascination the spirited tale of love end war that grew out of this young reporter's dash for i'ort Arthur. It breathes the air of battle. Its descriptions ( f assault, repulse, conquest, an I famine are so faithfhlly pictori d that they form, really, a contribution to the inner history o tiie Kusso-Japanese struggle. The peculiar rc mance of the novel centres in the fact (hat three of the four leading characters are war correspondents one a daring, plucky, loving little woman who does precisely and completely just what a wholesome and determined American girl would be expected to do- not only penetrates to Port Arthur and makes a great news "beat," but "scoop," several desirable hearts into the bargain. It is a refreshing thing to notice that the power of the newspaper press to mould sterl ing and s'urily chornclcr, aggressive and per severing manhood and womanhood, is so im pressively diawn in this lively noe! "The Fortress'' "I ippincolt's Magazine" has pre sented in this Srptemlicr issue a or' of fic tion worthy of wide rc::d.ng. It it sure to create comment. Human Footprint in Coal The first human imprint ever found in anthracite coal was uncov ered by Michael Sincavage, a miner at Kagle-Hill colliery, Pottsville.on Friday, the fossil being a man's footprint. Fossils of snakes, ferns, etc., have been plentiful; but this is the first evidence that prehistoric man was in existence in this country during the formation of the coal beds. The imprint, it is estimated, must have been made 10.000 years ago. lieuets Cannot be Oared "by local applications, as they can not reach the diseased portion of of the ear.
