T HE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURG, PA. TMUKSIiAY, AUGUST 17, 1905. SEVEREST STORM OF THE YEAR. Sunday afternoon's storm was -ae of the most .severe of the slim ier. Possibly not in the precipa ion of rain, though it came down .ery hard for a time, but in respect ? the electrical concomitants, it asily eclipsed anything that has isited this section this summer, he lightning was frightful in its sharpness and intensity, and many 1 eople, who were wont to sit out a the porch and enjoy the aceom nying cooling breezes, sought .it security of their homes. No damage has been reported tare, but ia Orange township, a fee near the residence of Arthur Uine was made the target of ery bolt, and one of its brandies, Ji Laving been torn off, crashed 'irobgh one of the windows of the welling, striking Mr. Kline's anghter, Bessie on the arm. It .-as at first feared that her arm -ad been broken, but an examina on by Dr. Vance, revealed only a evere bruise. The Bloomsburg & Sullivan '.ailroad Company suffered from ae effects of the storm, as did also He S. B. & B. Co. There was a indslide on the B. & S. between Irangevi'le and Light Street, of aite extensive proportions, while a the S. B. & B. the track was dly washed out at two different -laces. Reports from other points in the ounty would seem to indicate that le storm covered a wide path. On 'irst street, Nescopeck, the large ouble house owned by John G Jeyers and tenanted by D. P. Myers -nd the Paynton family was struck . y a cold flash of lightning during le storm and virtually split in two. oth families were in the house at lie time and while they were great shocked and frightened by the rash there was no one seriously in .jred. The flash struck at the able end, split down through the oof, through the garret floor and a down to the second and first toors throwing every thing topsy irvy. Had it been a hot flash the ouse with all contents would have een immediately devoured by ..ames. First cf The Season Donnelly and Hatfield's Magnificent Minstrels September 6th. In selecting Donnelly and Hat field's Magnificent Minstrels as the as the opening attraction of the season the local opera house manage ment chose wisely. The troup numbers forty people, among whom are several of the leading and best known artists in this popular form of entertainment. The name of Al. G. Field, has long been synony mous with all that is good 111 mins trelsy, and the fact that he is the financial backer of this organization is sufficient guarantee that the show will be first class. Read what the Wooster, Ohio Daily Republican of Thursday last, says of the performance: "While the first part was elabor ately costumed, the humor and the melody of the semi-circle as origin ated by Dan Decatur Emmett pre vailed. The jokes were crisp and crisply told, the trusic in solo and ensemble was satisfactory. The company seemed well and brim full of snap though newly rehearsed. There was a happy blending of reds golds and whites, indeed the organ ization was well and tastefully dressed. While the singing party showed considerable strength it was eclipsed by the comedy of the entertainment. While the first part revealed a combination of excellent talents in song and dance and, comedy, the olio carried a big list of clever entertainers. The olio in fact, consisted of a series of vaude ville acts each with individual merits. A touch of comedy was carried over into this feature oi the show reflecting the dominating element, humor, of the first part. A finale entitled "Game of Craps" introduced the olio. It is an inter esting sketch revealing the weak nesses of the negro for a game of dice. Clever make-uos added in terest to the act. The specialties were Varro, Wentwoth and Varro, in a comedy acrobatic stunt, the Toledos, con tortionists, Tuscanos, axe jugglers and Crawford & Finning, in a comedy music act. One may justly rank the contortion act as the bead liner. It was interesting because novel. Men in realistic forms of reptiles and toads did a contortion stunt that savored of the weird. The performance closed with an after-piece, a burlesque on the tent show. It was a big spectacular act unique through out. Gold Water Hen Are Active The Prohibitionists of the State are taking more than ordinary in terest in the coming convention of the party at Williamsport Aug. 22 and 23, and in every county in the State the voters of the party are electing delegates to the gathering at the Lycoming county seat. Some of the delegations will take with them many supporters of the princi ples of the party and it is expected that there will be important declara tions of the standing of the party toward State affairs. Just what will be done toward the Democratic ticket, which is one of protest against mismanagement of State affairs, remains to be seen. There are many in favor of endorsing Judge Stewart and Mayor Berry, but some of the " Middle of the Road" members are opposed to making any alliances whatever. DR.
