THE COLUMBIAN. f3LOdM&UR(i, PA. THE CHANGE Conducted by J. W. DARROW. Chatham. N. Y.. Press OumnpomUnl AYic York PUle fVronae AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT. The UntiP unit llir Vrena lHrnie(l lir Minn Cliira McDrrinlil. ISpeclnl (.'orrtfponilcneo. ' It litis Ions bi'oii my conviction tlint tlie grtiiiKP iIocji not Imlf iippri'Huto tho rutuo of bright, Judicious nnd pprslst eiiL iwn-i)ninT reporting. In my very limited rxperlonw I linvc liccn nnicli Impressed with tlie Iiii'ko returns for tlie labor expended. I luivp nuiiiy times Leon surprised lit the number of people imtnldo the Order w ho tell me Ihut they regulnrly rend the gnuij;o report und at the Interest displayed In qunrtei'M where I leant expected It. In Interest lug people In the grange or In niivtlilii else we have at heart the person, il touch Is Indispensable, but It alone 1.4 too slow nnd laborious to accomplish all that we need to accomplish. We need the publicity which only the newspaper can trlve us, nnd this, sup plemented by the warm human touch will iiwaUen a friendly Interest which will, I believe, In time draw to us the men und women whom wc nerd nnd Who need our Order. Hut In emphasizing the value of pP'SH work I must Insist on the hl;;h quality of that work. Nothing should lie reported which Is not Interesting to the public and creditable to the pr:ins', The reports must not be commonplace rlther In style or In subject matter, They must bo clear, concise and bright. Some one says that selection is one of the highest mental qualities, t'ertalnly It is one which Is peculiarly nece sary to the grange reporter. The ability to iteire the salient points and state them clearly and forcibly, ignoring those of less importance, Is a prime requisite, If addresses or discussions are to be reported it la imperative that the upenker be not misquoted nor his rlews misrepresented. If the subject Is mt achievement of the grange, exag gerated statements or uny attempt at flue writing Is to be studiously avoid ed. Overstatement and bombast will tiring the grange Into ridicule nnd dis repute. ' Systematic press work on a large scale la a recent development and a promising one. Very elllelent work Is leing done in New York, whose state grange maintains a press correspond ent who sends out n monthly bulletin of grange news to 400 newspapers of that state. Without doubt this wide spread advertising contributes much to the success of tlds leading grange state. The correspondent also furnlsh- to the American 1'ress Association n Knmge pnge, which Is used by about lift papers In various parts of the United States. The samo correspond ent supplies grange matter to a syndi cate of some fifty daily papers carry ing a dally agricultural department and having a combined circulation of about l.fil 10,000, as stated In the re port of the correspondent to the nation al prange. Orange leaders everywhere recognize- the great value to the Order of this service, and It seems only n question of time when It will become even more far reaching nnd valuable in the extension of the Order, lint while this systematic work covers tho field more easily und completely than any other agency can It will always need to be supplemented by the bright, prompt, elenrly expressed local corre spondence. Perhaps some ' mention should be made of the grange departments of Tarlous farm papers. Many of these are of little interest to the general public or indeed to tho grange, becnuse tliey are so evidently conducted in a perfunctory manner and are so pain fully lacking In originality or force. There are soma notable exceptions, bowever, which, are helping to make the Order widely und favorably known. The contrast serves to illus trate the point I have tried to make that presswork badly done is a by word and a reproach to the cause it aerves. Skillfully and conscientiously done it Is a most effective agency for strengthening nnd extending tlie work and Influence of the grange. OLAUA M'DERMID. Battle Creek, Mich. New Jernrr fctufe Granare. The thirty-second annual session of the New Jersey state grange was held at Trenton. The secretary's report bowed the membership to bo 7,000 In that state. The deputies' reports show ed Increased Interest In the Order throughout tho state and especially commended the field meetings in the cummer ns u means of increasing the membership. Resolutions were adopted fuvorlng u direct vole for United Stutes nenutors, advocating stricter regula tions for automoblllsts, fuvorlng the parcels post luw, opposing the repeal f the oleo law and favoring antitrust laws. G. W. V. Gaunt was re-elected aiaster of the state grange. Ma Source of Rtrenarlh, Not in the harvest feust, not in the octal hour, not in the good time, but to the service It can render humanity along the line of helpful development, the grange of the futuro is to Und Its ource of strength and Its inspiration. Exchange. Hon. I. H, Norrls, master of tho New York statu grange, was rl'lceted chairman of the national grange execu tive committee without opposition. Overseer George A. NEEDS A LARGER PARK State's Handsome Capital Uyild. lug Hidden In the Hidst of Harrlsburg's 5treets. Karly action will be taken by tho legislature on the Fox bill for the ex tension of the Cnpltol Park at Harris burg, and it is stated In high stato circles that thero is no doubt or it 3 passage or of the governor's approval of tho bill ns presented by Mr. Fox. In fact, the statement has bet n made by ofTlclnls that the sooner tho work la started the better, for Just that soon the capltol will be given a setting which will be adequate and which will enable the people to see tho beauties of the structure. The bill has been the subject of much discussion nnd not a few news paper ortlrlea, some of which have misrepresented conditions surrounding tho bill nnd the project. As a matter of fact, these have been baseless, and there Is now no opposition to the legis lative enactment of the bill Into n law. The project for the cnlniginenl of the park Is not a new one. It has been uri'.ed for oars by every n un who lino visited Ilarrislmrg and noto.I the small park with which tho stale his sin nmn.lcd Its expensive otHclnl build ings. Even while the (il l canlt d, tho colonial structure wh!"h wrn dstr-'Vel in the fire cf February 2, 17, stvoJ there were rr.any who urged that a larpc r tract b? taken to a.T'inl a go-id vantage lor the building. Ko.v tint the state has appropriate over ? l.r. in.O' 0 to complete the btilldlns which shel ters the le-.iHlcturo tin -.1 uu'.te oKicm. there is a demand for a larger park, so that the superb stite house can be seen. There are few handsomer biiil! Ings In the country, certainly no Btatu cnpl'.ul that can surpass it for graceful proportions and wealth of architec tural detail. The building 13 as groat in circumference as St. Peter's in Rome, yet can scarcely be seen, be cause it Is hidden In tho centre of aa active, bustling city. To get a proper view, one which will afford a chance to appreciate its beauties, a person must go Into the country, and of course that is neither advantageous nor con venient. Tho building is destined to be the pride of a state, and there should. In the opinion of those who have seen other state capltols and who have studied such 1., alters, be something done at once to give better surround ings. The capitol is set in the midst of a small pr.rk, but It Is so shaped that on the cast and west the building Is close to the streets. On the west side there U more chance to see tho buKd Ing. as it is act back a few hundred foot nnd Is approached by a broad flight of steps. This affords an im pressive view at close ratine. A block away the view is seriously circum scribed, and only a part of the build ing can be neen. Extension of this Fide would be exceedingly expensive, ns the best part of llarrlsburg, tho loading churches, the finest residences and many Institutions, possessing or namental buildings, are located there. Tlii.", idde, however, furnishes nn ex ample of what failure to take ad vantage of nn opportunity sometimes costs. Kighty years ago this very sec tion between the park and tho Sus quehanna was offered to tho state for $33,Onn. Now It could not be bought for five or six millions. Happily the cast side is Just the reverse. It Is on this part that It la proposed to take in some 20 city blocks for extension of the park. The capitol on this side rises almost from tho houseline to the height of 200 feet or so, and can not be seen to any advan tage. There ' Is only one place from which a decent glimpse can be ob tained, and that Is from a bridge some distance away, and it does not give anything like a satisfactory view. Tho blocks which nre crossed by four streets running each way and some alloys are among the poorest in Har rlsburg. Some of the alleys contain small, rickety buildings, and the gen eral character of the houses is Door. and to acquire them will not take much trouble or money. In fact, their removal would be a good thing. The proximity of this section of the city to the cnpltol has caused more than one legislator in years gone by to wish that something could be done to add It to the park, and now Is the time, before Improvements are made to streets and when values are low. In a few years It will take a much larger sum than now estimated, and mounwhile the capltol building will bo practically hidden. $6-15 to Washington D- U- and Butarn via Headin Railway.
