A Plan That Work Sncreasrnllr In Jifi llnmpahlre. Governor nurlioMer, wlion mnMer of the Now Ilniniisliirr stnte grange 1b lOOIt, rpin.irUed that n few yenrs ng4 system of prizes was established by the stnto grunge for promoting and ppt'feiM lug various feutnrcn of the gruiiKe. When tlUs policy wim first Buggestml It wns rognnlod with sus picion by luuny, but bus ho thoroughly acwmpllslipd Its purpose nnd bo pITcc tlvoly contributed to the success of jcrnngp work lis to dispel doubt us to Us value. There must be some In centive to action beyond the bare sense of duty In order to succeed In any un dertaking or enterprise. The incentive may not bo the real vnlue or useful ness of the prize when obtained, so much as the spirit of competition aroused In working to Bccure It. This principle Is recognized In many wnyg and made effective In securing en thusiastic effort In many directions. The prizes In the grange have been used for Increasing the membership, Increasing the attendance nt meetings, perfecting the ritual work and Improv ing the literary exercises. A prize be ing offered In each deputy district renders the competition fierce on ac count of contact and knowledge of progress being made by competitors and enables the award to be made by a deputy familiar with all the condi tions. The decoration of grange halls with trophies won In these friendly contests for competition Is between granges rather than between Individual members affords nn Interesting ex hibit to visitors and an Inspiration for more zealous work on the part of members In future years. No enthu siastic sportsman decorates the walls of his rude camp In the forest or his elegant home in the city with trophies of the hunt or the chase with greater satisfaction than do the memlsrs of a victorious grange decorate the walls of their grange home with evidences of victory In the mental race stimulat ed by a well urrunged und appropriate system of prizes. The cost of prizes offered annually Is about $200. KANSAS GRANGE STORES. An Example of Snrreaufnl Co-operas (Ion of Farmers. The largest grange store In the Unit ed States Is located at Oluthe, Kan. It has been In successful operation for twenty-nine years, and it lias distrib uted to its patrons more than $500,000 la dividends. In Olathe Is located also the rutrous' Co-operative bank, with a capital of $100,000 and surplus funds of $33,000. Both of thesi institutions are owned and managed by members of the grange. About one year ago the store building and all the merchandise were burned, causing a loss of about 197,000. It was Insured for $00,000, which was promptly paid, and with the surplus fund of $30,000 the store was rebuilt and restocked immediate ly. At Cadmus, Kan., there is another similar enterprise. Tho store occupies a stone building 40 by 100 feet In size and three stories high, with a well suit ed and tastily decorated grange hall on the third floor. This co-operative enterprise invoices $18,000 of machin ery and supplies in addition to the building and real estate owned. The Cadmus grango has about 300 mem bers. State Granite Meeting. No World's Fair Headquarter. Early in tho season it was hoped that tho national grange might pro vide suitable grange headquarters at the St Louis world's fair, but the fair management did not seem to be as en thusiastic over It as the executive committee was and delayed making arrangements for a suitable building until finally the committee abandoned the idea. It Is much to be regretted, inasmuch as It Vould have been a pleusant meeting place for the grang ers throughout the United States and .would have made known the work of i the grange through its representatives there and through its literature, and I many might have becomo acquainted '!. with its aims and purposes who now ;' know but little of it Major McFee and wife of Lake coun ty, O., are earnest workers in the grango. They are also officers in the Salvation Army. The army farm com prises 000 acres. Progress all along the line will be re ported at tho national grange mooting In November, Pennsylvania now has three Juvenile granges. , Head Law ' hnui'.s- V mild Compel fcupervlion to Sign Petitions For Improvement!. 8ta' llighwav Commissioner I utile r will make an effort in tlie I I minj Ltx'slatnrc to ure a law ,.i:h -tiding the roiirl law ot 1003 so .is to make it obligatory on the part nl Mttx 1 t i-ots to give their approval when a iinjority of the property owners nl'-ng n proposed road have ; ctitioncil for the improvements, tinder tlie present 'aw the super visota of a township can tise their own judgement in approving an .pplieation for u stretch of good road, and unless they do so the ui id cannot 1 constnuted.
