THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA, AFTER LARD D2ALER3. Stale Official Gunning For th. Daalon in Impure Lard. Dealers in lard throughout the state who purchased this article from the wholesale houses of the West are now receiving the attention of the Pairy and Food branch of the Department of Agriculture. Complaints have reached the department to the effect that compounds have been sold all over the stale. Analysis of these pro ducts of Western packers showed that the lards consisted of tallow, stearin and cotton seed oil. Secretary Critchfield, Commissioner Warren and C. H. Witmer, of Sun bury, chief counsel of the department, held a conference on the subject at Harrisburg, last week, and took up the complaints and have mapped out plans of action. These officials have also held conferences with prominent larmers throughout the state, and have reached the conclusion that the dealers in the state who handled the impure lards will be proceeded against it th;y attempt to dispose of the coin pounds as the pure article. As long as they label it what it really contains, no action will be taken. Dr. Warren in discussing the matter saui mat mere were farmers, as well as manufacturers, in the state, wio make and sell genuine lard, which is composed wholly of the fat of piu These pure products of the farmers and manufacturers, he said, were worth thousands and thousands of dollars annually, and it was not right that their interests should be hamper ed and encroached unon bv the com position sold under the name of pure laru. iiiesc counteileits, added Dr Warren, would be driven out of the state and the home producers, who offer the real article, protected, as well as the consumers. Do You Walk Straight? Few Peoplo Do, Says a Fault Finder Who Notices Things. "Have you ever noticed how few people walk straight?'' said a the man who hnds fau.t. "I am not speaking in a spiritual sense, neither do I refer to their gait, which is certainly bad enough, but to the crookedness of their path. A straight road is not at all times possible, I admit, and when the streets are most crowded a fellow is excusable for darting around any old way, but when given a clear side walk I can't for the life of me see why he cannot walk straight. "Watch any man and women are just as bad who starts out from home at an hour when other people in the neighborhood are busy on their own doorsteps and give him a clean sweep. Since there are no obstructions in the way, there is no reason on earth why he should not proceed in a straight line to the nearest corner, but instead of pursuing that undeviating course he zigzags most suspiciously. Now he is perilously near the curb, now brush ing against the area railing, while oc casionally he evens things up by tak ing a lew steps in the middle of the pavement. The people who thus waver in their gait are perfectly sober and would be surprised it anybody should show them a diagram of their tracks. Naturally all that veering and tacking appreciably increases the dis tance traveled, which is another reason why people in a hurry should learn to walk straight." WASHINGTON. From our Kecul.ir C rrcJ;)on'tcnt. Washington, August jt, 193. The scandal atfectng the a Immis tration of Indian alTairs, and involving both the d'.'iut'rii'-nt of the Interior and that of Justice, is growing daily and already the revelations have caus ed the gravest concern to the ad ministration which appreciates that the discovery of corruption in two imponent departments of the govern ment, following so closely on the heels of the Postoffke scandals cannot but have a serious effect on the fortunes of the republican party at the polls. With a view to offsetting the damag ing effect of recent revelations, Secre tary Hitchcock has announced that he will immediately appoint a com missioner to investigate all of his em ployes involved in the irregularities and also the members of the Dawes Commission, and the acting Attorney General has stated that a special commissioner will be promptly sent to the Indian Territory to investigate the alleged connection of several officials ot the Department of Justice with concerns organized for the pur pose of making profit at the expense of the Indians. An example of the condition o! affairs now existing in the Indian Territory is shown by the situation at Muskogee, where the Dawes Com mission has an office. The Canadian Valley Trust Company, of which Tarns Ilixby, chairman of the Dawes Commission, is president. G. XV, Hopkins, formerly law clerk of the Commission, is an employe; and V. G. Reuter, clerk in charge of the land office of the Commission, is a director, has its offices in the same buildings as the Dawes Commission and oc cupies the same apartments, on the ground lloor, as were formerly oc cupied by the Commission, the Com mission having removed to the second floor. As a result of this happy ar rangement, the untutored savage walks innocently into the office of tne Trust Company, to the representatives of which he explains his business. It is alleged that these representatives are not always scrupulous to explain that they are not, at that particular moment, representing the Dawes Commission but are members of a private institution, and the Indian, who has valuable lands to lease or sell, completes his business according to their dictation, makes his mark in the presence of witnesses and goes his way, all innocent of the fact that he has not been dealing with the Dawes Commission, the authorized representative of the Government, and equally innocent of the fact that in the lease he has just executed there is a contract for the sa'e of his lands at the expiration of the lease at some nominal figure, the contract to take effect as soon as the law will permit him to part with his patrimony. ' Some conception of the gravity of the situation and the opportunities for fraud existing, where the very representatives of the Government appointed to protect the Indians are officers and directors of concerns or ganized to take advantage of his ignorance, may be gathered from the fact that the Indian lands now being allowed in severalty are estimated as worth upwards of $150,000,000, a3 gregatingover 20,000,000 acres, some of it the finest farm land in the United States and much of it excellently situated with regard to markets and railway facilities. Several members of the Dawes Commission, United States Attorneys and Indian Agents are charged with being interested in these companies, most of which have been organized within the past nine months and all of which give promise Every farmer knows that some plants grow better than nhci. o.n mny be the same and seed may seem the same but some plants are weak and others strong. And that's the way with children. Tlicy are like young plants. Same food, same home, same care but some grow big and strong while others stay small and weak. Scott's Emulsion offers an easy way out of the difficulty. Child weakness often means starvation, not because of lack of food, but because the food does not feed. Scott's Emulsion really feeds and gives the child growing strength. Whatever the cause of weak ness and failure to grow Scott's Emulsion seems to find it and set the matter right.
