This action was taken, no doubt, because of the constant demands upon the business men for advertis ing in the ways mentioned above. Of course, there are other ways of advertising besides the newspapers, which bring good results, but many of the schemes are utterly valueless, and amount simply to a cash con tribution from the merchant, for which he gets no returns w hatever. There are men in this town, and in every town, who never do any newspaper advertising, but who are ready to seize every opportunity to patronize a stranger who comes along with some fake scheme. One of these schemes that we have in mind is this. A few years ago two strange young men landed here in the morning, secured forty dollars for advertising cards on blotters about ten by fifteen inches, to be distributed among the hotels, got their printing done in the after noon, and left town in the evening with thirty two dollars clear profit in ttieir pockets. They agreed to have five hundred blotters printed, but ordered only fifty and these were all delivered to one hotel. The landlord threw them under the counter and they never were seen again until they went into the waste basket. The printing was done at this office, and we got the story from the men themselves who were chuckling over the fine string of "suckers" they had caught. Some months afterward we saw the blot ters taken from under the counter and the landlord gave us his part of the story as he threw them awav. This is only one of hundreds of the same kind of schemes that are worked on business men. The safe way is to deal with men you know. and who are accountable lor what they do, and who can't afford to fake you. White Vests, Also Vacation. Notice has been posted by the P. & R.
