Mtinll Inserts Thai Travel In Troops anil Seem lu Hiive u l.iirgi r leader. Charles Meissen, French explorer, in traveling through Shun, observed a species of small gray nuts which were new to him, says the Kobe (Japan) Herald. These ants were much engaged in traveling. They lived in damp places and went iu t roups. To his surprise he noticed among them from time to time un oc casional ant which was much larger than the others and moved at a much swifter pace, d each of these larger snts, M. Meissen saw, always carried cne of the gray ants on its back. While the main body of gray outs were always on foot they were ae companied by at least one of their wn sort mounted on one of these larger ante. It mounted and de' Inched itself now and then from the line, rode rapidly to the head, came swiftly back to the rear, and seemed to be the com in under of the expedi tion. The explorer was satisfied thut thi species of ant employs a larger ant possibly a drone of the same ape-' cies just as we employ horxea to ride upou, though scarcely more than one ant in each colony seems to be provided with a mount. THIEVES IN A WHIP DUEL. rc- to Vath Each Other llathar Than Uo to Jail fur Their Theft. Iu Anderson county, S. C, two ne groes were recently caught in the act f robbing a farmer, and, rather than to to jail, they offered to uccept any punishment the farmer might inflict. The farmer deoided that they should whip each other. The negroes were taken into a field nnd stripped to the waist. There Is no whipping-post law in South Carolina, but this did cot interfere with the plans for the lashing. Euch was given a buggy truce, and they fought each othej- un til the blood began to flow. A big erowd gathered to watch the duel of whipping. A neighbor of the Bum who had been robbed acted as referee, and made the negroes break clean when they clinched. Under the rules the contest had to continue until one negro had given the other 100 lashes. Foul tips were ot counted. Finally, after a desper ate fight, the referee lifted his hand as a signal to stop. .The man who suggested the whipping had given his enemy 100 lashes. Ho got 75.' They were in bad shape when the ight ceased, and went to bed. A SHOWER OF RATS. ThonanmU of the Undent! llnroe hf a Tornado Over a Tana In Algeria. Oddly enough, most of the monkeys managed to hold on to the (line trees, although the larger portion of them were killed; but literally thousands of rats were carried high Into the air and strewn in vast numbers over the (Irund Pliarc and. the suburbs of Uougie. The Knbyle tribes of the neighbor hood, who are extremely superstl- tlous, were terribly frightened and fled in all directions, stircadimr terror over the district. They believed that the rats were sent down from the skies to punish them, and that the end of the world had come, la the town the more intelligent Arabs were less superstitious nnd promptly set to work to kill those rats which were not already dead, lint there were so many of them still alive nnd they found such convenient hiding places that, the hunt is still going on.
