Paul Casey is now filling the
position of manager of the Western
Union Telegraph Co's office in
Berwick. He was sent up on Mon
day owing to the very critical ill
ness of Manager H. O. Rodgers.
Taul is but sixteen years of age,
and has been with the Company
only a little more than a year, but
in that brief time has mastered the
art of telegraphy, nnd by close ob
servation and application to the
various details of the busiuess, has
fitted himself so that he is in every
way competent to discharge the!
duties of the position to which he
has been assigned.
The "K d Oafe" Coming
Manager Fowler announces for
Friday evening next at the Grand
Opera House an engagement quite
out of the ordinary for Bloomsburg
ii "The Red Cafe," a melodra
matic spectacle produced on a scale
of magnificance seldom seen outside
of the large cities. A sudden
changing of the company's route has
enabled the securement of this at
traction and it is to be hoped that
substantial support will be given to
the enterprise and consequent en
couragement to other notable at
tractions to visit our city.
H. J. Achenbach witnessed the
production of "The Bold Soldier
Boy" with Andrew Mack in the
stellar role at Ford's theatre, Balti
more Saturday evening.

tendent for the Lehigh Valley Coal

pointed mine inspector for the Gi
rard Estate with headquarters in
Girardville, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of John B.

Winter arrived in a hurry on
Sundav. Durine the afternoon and
evening snow fell to the depth of
nearly two inches and the mercury
dropped to eighteen degrees above
zero. The snow 'clinging last to
the trees and wires made a very
p.etty sight Monday morning.
If there is anything in the saying
that the day of the month upon
which the first snow tails indicates
the number of similar storms that
may be expected during the winter,
we will have a considerable amount
of the beautiful to contend with
between this and spring.
No nicer, in fact none as beautiful

Charles Warner, who for some

wagon, has gone to Wilkes-Barre
to work for the Pennsylvania Rail
road Co.
Hon. Fred T. Ikeler delivered
his celebrated lecture, "Agitators"
at Mauch Chunk Monday night.
He was also the third number on
the teachers' institute lecture course
of Cumberland county at Carlisle
last night.
A merchant called our attention
to the tact that while the consump
tion of coal oil had fallen off aboiu
forty per cent, the price had made
a corresponding jump, advancing
from seven to nine cents a gallou.

Ralph 12. Smith has been elected
assistant manager of the base ball
team of Dickinson Seminary for
1903. Mr. Smith was home last
week ou a vacation and received
the congratulations of friends on
the honor conferred upon him.
Rev. J. R. Murphy, pastor of St.
Columba's Roman Catholic church,
holds services in Berwick on the
first Sunday of each month. The
meetings are held in a private house,
bnt it is expected that a mission
chapel will be established there.

Hartman's enlarged store is a
busy place these days. The formal
opening took place last Friday and
was very largely attended. A string
orchestra was in attendance aud
furnished music during the after
noon and evening. Many congrat
ulations were extended to Mr.
Hartman for his enterprise, and the
handsome decorations and tasteful
display of goods were much ad
mired. A dozen or more clerks are
in waiting to serve all comers.

M. A. Bibby of Catawissa who
for many years has figured promi
nently in the business life of that
town, died at his home thereon
Friday at the age of 61. He was
formerly and for many 'years cm-
ployed as agent for the D. L. &
W. R. R. Co.

The hunting season for deer
closed on Monday. Other game,
however, may be killed until the
fifteenth. The fine that will have
to be paid for an infraction ot the
game law is $100 for a deer, $25
for a pheasant and $io for a rabbit.
The constable making the arrest
gets half the fine and $10 from the
state for each conviction together
with all his fees.
That II. A. Humphrey's reputa
tion as a hrst class painter and
paper hanger extends beyond the
limits of the county is evidenced by
the fact that he has just completed
several contracts at Mocanaqua,
and is now engaged painting and
papering the Presbyterian ch"rch
at Shickshinuy. Increasing busi
ness, and without solicitations is
always regarded as the best proof
of ability.
The decorations in Pursel's store
are far ahead of anything ever at
tempted there before. A row of
tall white pillars on each side, each
surmounted with an urn of plants,
give the appearance of a Court of
Honor. Festoons in every direct
ion add to the beauty of the ar
rangement. Great taste has been
displayed in these decorations. A

Rev. Sullivan was raised in
Bloomsburg. He was ordained last
spring and said his first mass in
St. Columba's church, here, in
May.
