Rathbone, formerly director general of posts of Cuba, was contin ued yesterdny, when the trial of the charges growing out of the Cuban xwtofllce frauds wns resumed. Private lorreopondcnce between Rathbone and former Tostmaster General Smith was introduced. Rathbone said he did not take part In any campaign having for ts purpose his appointment as civil governor of Cuba. Some overzealous friends began one, but he did not In dorse It and wrote to the president and postmaster general saying he did not want the position. The government Introduced Charles F. W. Neely's loiter, with a petition to the president asking for the ap pointment of Rathbone. Rathbone said he did not know of Its existence until six weeks ago. A dramatic Incident of the trial In the afternoon was the confronting of Rathbone with Reeves with regard to the statement Reeves alleges Rathbone made after Rathbone's return to the United States In November, 18!W, and two months after the stamps were burned. When Reeves took the stand, Rath bone wus sitting opposite him. Reeves said that Rathbone told him that Neely had arranged the matter with regard to the burning of the surcharged stamps, so that fraud would not be discovered. Rathbone here asked Reeves If he was willing to swear to this statement. Reeves replied, "Yes," to which Rathbone said, "God help you!" Reeves occupies himself during the trial with milking copious notes. lie Is a most enthusiastic witness for the government. La Lucha refers to him as unprepossessing, evasive and guard ed, apparently willfully stupid, and snys he has Inspired his listeners with the Idea that he Is trying to save himself, that he is unsatisfactory to the pur pose of the investigation and contra dictory. Rathbone admitted having received the letter from Neely after his arrest. He said It was in answer to a cable gram he sent him to return when In spector General Charles Burton report, ed a shortage in the postal accounts. On the bottom of this letter was writ ten, "Destroy this letter." NEW JERSEY POLITICS. Legislature Opens Today Hot Fight For Srnatorslilp. TRENTON, N. J., Jan. 14. This is one of the biggest opening days of the legislature that has been experienced In Trenton for some time. The several candidates for the Republican nomina tion to succeed General Sewell in the United States senate have opened headquarters at the different hotels, and their rooms are the scene of a moving crowd of callers, many of whom go from one headquarters to an other. Five of the candidates Messrs. Griggs, Dryden, Balrd, Herbert and Gardner hove headquarters at the Trenton House. Senator Stokes hus headquarters at the Hotel 'Windsor. There is nothing ou the surface to in dicate that the coutest is any nearer a settlement than It has been for the past two weeks. The caucus for the selection of a can didate for United States senator will not be held until next week, probably Thursday. Canadians Sail For South Africa. ' HALIFAX, N. S., Jan. 15. The first detachment of the Canadian mounted rifles for service in South Africa em barked and sailed yesterdoy in the steamer Manhattan. The detachment consisted of three squadrons and one troop, the rest of the corps remaining to go by the steamer Victorian. The embarkation was at the dockyard, the troops from the camp, with two bands, being stationed i t the embarkation pier with a guard of honor. Colonel Blscoe, command r of the Imperial troops In British North Amerh u; Major General O'Grady-Haly, commander of the Canadian militia, and other officers witnessed the departure. Major Mer ritt is in command of the Manhattan detachment. Bin- Fire In Manchester, N. II. MANCHESTER, N. II., Jan. 15.-The Kennard, the finest business block in New Hampshire, has been totally de stroyed. The adjoining Smyth block, containing two banks and the Park theater, also caught fire. The losses Hay reach $400,000. The walls of tho Kennard fell shortly after 11 o'clock. Wireless Ocean Messages In June. OTTAWA, Ont, Jan. lO.-Slgnor Btarconi has left for New York. The plans for his new station at Glnee bay, Cape Breton, will be prepared nt once, and bis expectation Is that the station will be ready for communication across the Atlantic by the beginning of June. Biff Shipment 'of Sootoh Potatoes. NEW YORK, Jan. 15. The Wilson line steamer Ohio, Just arrived from Hull and Dundee, brought 20,587 sacks of Scotch potatoes, weighing nearly 2,000 tons. This Is tho largest con signment of potatoes ever brought to this port by any steamer. Governor Odell's Birthday, ALBANY, N. Y., Jan. 15. Ton miners are now known to have lost their lives in the explosion Monday evening in mine No. 0 of the Mllby & Dow Mining company at Dow, I. T. The ten men who lost their lives were the only persons In the pit. All the Codies were recovered, and as none was burned the conclusion Is that death was due to after damp. The explosion did not injure the shaft, which wns a new one, and the Are that followed was put out before it did much dam age. The sound of the explosion was heard plainly at the surface, and rescuers Im mediately went to work. The explosion occurred nt a depth of 210 feet. The machinery was not injured, and min ers working at the mouth of the pit descended as soon as safety would permit. The bodies were found close together. The fire was extinguished before it had reached any of them. The victims had been In the employ of the company for some time, and most of them were men with families. The mine had not yet been thorough ly opened. Experienced mining men say It Is remarkable that gas should have accumulated in sufficient quanti ty in a new mine to cause an explosion. A heavy call for extra margins is said to have been the cause of the posting of the notice. The call was made Monday afternoon, and Phillips and his staff worked all night over the firm's books. Phillips opened negotiations with ele vntor men before the opening of the board In an endeavor to dispose of his rye outside the pit. Brokers acting for Armour & Co., how ever, bought nearly all of It, and the market In consequence rallied sharply to 05 cents. Morgan, Jr., son of J. Plerpont Morgan of New York; Ed mund Lincoln Baylies, a barrister, of New York, and William Wetmore, son of Senntor Wetmore of Rhode Island. NEW TRIAL DENIED. Syndicate Miller Must Serve Out Ten Year Sentence. NEW YORK, Jan. 15.-The court of appeals has reversed the order of the appellate division of the supreme court, second department, granting a new trial to Miller of Franklin syndi- . cote fame. Tho court has affirmed the Judgment t of the trial court, convicting him of j larceny. lie was sentenced to prison for ten ' years. The appellate division granted ' a new trial, but the court of appeals holds that his first trial was a fair one. Gorman For Senator. ANNAPOLIS. Md., Jan. 14.-Fortner United States Senator Gorman nrrlved here last night and was the guest of i Governor Smith nt the executive man sion. At noon today he witnessed his re-election to the United States senate to succeed Senutor George L. Welling ton, whose term will expire in March, 103. No other name than that of Mr. Gormau was even thought of in this connection, and not a single Democrat In either branch voted against him. Mme, Nordlca Injured, ROME, Ga., Jan. 13. As a result of a collision between a passenger train and a freight train on the Southern railway at an early morning hour near Reeves Station, twenty miles north of Rome, Mme. Lillian Nordlca, the sing er, was Injured; her accomponlst, E. Romnine Simmons, sustained a bruised hand, nn engineer was killed, and three other employees of the road were In jured. Dr. Krause Indicted. LONDON, Jan. 14. The grand Jury has found a true bill against Dr. Krause, the former governor of Johan nesburg, on tho charge of inciting Cor nelius Broecksman, the ex-public pros ecutor of Johannesburg, who was exe cuted STt- 30 last, to murder John Douglas Foster, an English lawyer who was attached to Lord Roberts' staff. WASHINGTON, Jan. 14.-The latest evidence of the friendliness of Em peror William of Germany has come Jn the form of a message to President Roosevelt announcing that he would send his brother, Prince Henry, to this country to attend the launching of the kaiser's yacht now building at the ship yards of Townsend & Downey, New York. The following Is the text of the emperor's message, which was In Eng lish: "I am most gratified by your kind permission for Miss Roosevelt's per forming the. christening ceremony of my yacht. It gives me great pleasure to announce to you that I have or dered my yacht, the Ilohenzollerii, to cross over and be present at the cere mony. My brother, Admiral Trlnce Henry of Prussia, will appear as my PRINCE HENRY, representative and will be able to ex press to you once more my sincere feelings and friendship for the United States and their illustrious head.." A dispatch from Berlin says that the ( length of Prince Henry's stay In the ' United States Is undetermined and will depend in part upon the wishes of President Roosevelt and the pro gramme for his .entertainment. The sending of Prince Henry to America is regarded by the court ns another evi dence of the emperor's desire to win the good will of the American people and government for Germany. In the last few weeks the emperor has shown to Embassador White and to Mrs. White various marks of his consideration and has sent to President Roosevelt a per sonal letter expressing his esteem and later requested that the president's daughter christen his majesty's new yueht. Dote of Prince's Sailing-. , BERLIN, Jan. 13. The Hohenzollern has been placed in drydock nt Kiel to have her bottom scraped and painted. She is under orders to be fitted out for a ten weeks' cruise and will sail for New York on Jan. 22, according to pres ent plans, arriving there about Feb. 3. Prince Henry will snil early in Febru ary on one of the North German Lloyd steamers. He will he attended by sev eral officers of high rank whose names have not yet been announced. The richest man In Germany is Herr Krupp. Accord ing to the Income tax returns, he has an income of between 20,000,000 and 21,000,000 marks a year. No one ap proaches him in wealth. He stands in n class nlone, and there are over a dozen classes between Herr Krupp and the next richest man in Germany. The income tax returns show sixty-five oth er Incomes of more" than 1,000,000 marks per year. Ten of these incomes are under 3,000,000, two nre under 4.000,000 and three are under 5,000,000 marks a year. The returns also show 2,774 persons to hnve a yearly income of upward of 100,000 marks.
