While the suburbs are still bewailing1 a plague of caterpillar she has begun i the work of extermination. She has ; lent a bug1 to do tho work, and It la a wonderful bitjr indeed a hug errant, one might, say, fur It has a lance and a iu.it of armor nnd just as much tlevc tion to duty ns any knight one ever read about. This remarkable bug does not seem to hnve any "mission upon earth ex THK CATEHP1 LLA ll'8 ENEMY. (Unattractive Tleetle That Is Delighting Eastern Gardeners.) cept to fight ca'terpillars. It would rather fight than eat, and whenever it fights it eats, so that it takes an en thusiastic interest in the campaign. Its appetite would be disgraceful in a bug of less exemplary pursuits. ! There Is a specimen in the Philadel phia .North American olttce, says mat paper, which has devoured more thaa ten times its weight la caterpillars la one day. But the most remarkable thinfl about this ferocious insert is its meth od of attack. It does not use sharp claws, like some beetles, nor poison, like spiders. It has a little way of its own. Fastened by a flexible joint to the lower part of the body is a lance and with this deadly weaion the bug does rapid execution. It attacks a cater pillar like a torpedo boat attacking an unprotected cruiser. It creeps on its prey quietly, then makes a sudden i rush. liaising itself when near the victim, it lets the lance drop forward, then leaps upon the poor, fuzzy thing and drives the sharp point home. There follows a violent struggle, of course. The caterpillar squirms and twists and rolls itself about, but the lance holds and there is no escape. The bug does not let go until it has satisfied itself. Gradually the form of the caterpillar shrinks and when its little enemy withdraws the lanee and backs away there is only the skin of the worm left. , The bug is about three-eighths of an inch long and oval in shape. It has six legs and two delicate feelers. The back is curiously marked, the front part being a light brown, the back part dull yellow. There are markings' in. black, in which may be traced a cari cature of a Japanese face. Under neath the insect is colored light yellow and light green. MEMORIAL TO HUMBERT. Since then many of the fountains in European capitals were fashioned by his hand. The memorial in the pantheon is re markably bold in outline. It is the ex pression of sorrow and gratitudeof the Italian artillery among whom King Humbert was exceedingly popular. Two Ufe-fiized lions represent re spectively the murdered king and tha artillry. The lion, representing the dying monarch, has a shield of honor on whloh are the names of Yillafrnnca, Casamleciola, Busca, Napoll tha name rendered memorable in the Ufa of King Humbert.
