The position is evidently not a very pleasant or paying otie or there would be some seekers after it. - A petition was presented to the Court at Wilkes Iiarre on Monday lor the incorporation of a new borough out of a portion of Kings ton township to Ix: known as Mc Kinley borough in honor of the late president. - - - The sale of Pan-American stamps has iu compliance with an order from the Post office department, been discontinued at the local office, as well as at all other post offices. The remaining unsold ones will be sent b;ick to Washington. Great interest is being manifest ed in the meteor display, which it is believed will occur tonight and to morrow night. This display was looked for in 1809 and in 1000. The wise ones in general appear to con cur in the belief that the stars will surely fall tonight. So make a note of it and be on the lookout. R. of Orangeville, will be held in the Post rooms in that town this coming Saturday evening to which the public is most cordially invited. - For years the region has had to contend ith fakirs of all sorts, and not a few of the good people have been duped, but now comes a still more dangerous class the female fakir. During the past few weeks the region has been overrun with this class selling all kinds of goods. Dr. McAfee who was an nounced to speak in the Presbyter ian Church on Wednesday evening, was unable to come, and bis place was filled by Rev. W. R. Campbell of Salt I.ake City, who is temporari ly stationed iu New Yotk city as manager of the movement to secure a constitutional amendment to pro hibit polygamy. Mr. Campbell is a graduate of Lafayette College, anl the Union Theological Seminary, and has re sided in the west for the past fifteen years. Munley died on Friday and his wife expired on Saturday. j The dead body of Charles' Cooney, a carpenter at Hollenbach Colliery, was found when the men went to work Monday morning, and tbe supposition is that he fell from a pile of lumber and was killed. A gas well, which promises to excel any of those drilled by the Con sumers' Gas Company, at Roubtte, has been struck. Experts say that the well will produce 2,000,000 feet of gas per day. Gas was tound in a 30-foot sand at a depth of 11 75 feet. Michael Gavin, who escaped from the insane asylum at Danville tour years a,;o, returned to' Wilkes- Barre Monday and his wife, fearing he would injure her, had him arrested. The man says that for four years he has been working in the Baldwin Works at Phil?aelphia. It is feared that diphtheria will wipe out the Jacob Wetierau family, at Quakake, a few miles south of Hazleton. Within a month five children have died, and on Monday the mother succumbed to the con- ag'on. Three other children are father and one son have been the only ones thus far to escape. While Frank Benscoter, a farmer of Ross township, Luzerne county, was out hunting on Saturday after noon, near his home, his gun was ac cidentally discharged, the contents entering his left side, near the heart, and he died the same eveninij. He was a son of the late Anthony Ben scoter and leaves his wife and four small children. He was q years old. Having run a rabbit into a wall, he made a search for the game and in reaching for the gun, by some mis hap, he drew the hammer and ex ploded the charge. - - ... -For Bunt.
