THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURQ, PA. .'I 1 4 breyfus' Own Btory. . A powerful chapter from one of the most remarkable of recorded hum in experiences, appears in McClure's Magazine for May Capt. Alfred Dreyfus's own story of his arrest, dep redation and transportation to Devil's Isle. To this story is addid a por tion of the Diary kept by Dreytus on the island, for his wife, and referred to so often and so mysteriously in the Rennes trial, but never made public. A more intense and convincing ex pression of human agony than that found in these fragments is inconccive able. From first to last it is evident that the sufferer is bcwilderd and rradden ed by what has befallen him, and that all which keeps him from insanity or death is his determination to prove that his persecutions are powerless to overthrow what he calls the "sovereign ty of the soul." These dramatic pas sages make it clear, too, that Dreyfus was compelled to undergo on Devil's Isle evtry ignominy and hardship his jailers could djvise, even to close confinement in a hut, enclosed by palhsades and shut out from air and light, with double irons upon his legs throughout the night. The book from which this remark able document is taken, containing the story of Dreyfus's entire five years of suffering and imprisonment, is to be published by McClure, Phillips & Co., in May. No one will fail to find pleasant, proritable diversion in the May La dies' Home Journal. Its thirty and more contributors cover a wide nnge of interesting subjects. "When John C. Calhoun Went a-Wooing," is no less engrossing than "The Brilliant Social Reign of Harriet Lane" in the White House, or than Clara Morris's "Frank Sen," the love tale of a little Japanese girl acrobat. There is a weird fascination in the narration of "Some Remarkable Cases of Double Personality," and several thrilling stories are told of "When the Ani mals Escape from the Zoo." In "Summers of Our Discontent." Ed ward Bok gives sound advice on sum mer vacations notably good in tell ing what to avoid. "Preserving a Husband in Summer," and "Keeping Summer Boarders with Success" solve both problems. There are three arch itectural articles, and the usual con tributions concerning work in and about the home, fashions, &c. The halt a dozen or more notable pictorial features include "In the Fold," the best photograph of the twenty-seven thousand submitted in the ournafs contest ; a page reproduction of W. L. Taylor's painting, "President Lin coin's Call for "Volunteers," and "A Glimpse of Picturesque Canada." By the Curtis Publishing Co., Philadel phia. One dollar a year ; ten cents a copy. The note was dated March 3, 1893, four days before Mr. Richards died. When the note was presented for payment Mr. Nesbitt pronounced it a forgery. Mrs. Richards then placed the matter in the hands of her attorneys, who notified the bank pres ident that a suit would follow unless the note was paid. Mr. Nesbitt at once engaged Congressman Palmer to look after his interests. Mr. Nesbitt is a millionaire and a man of the highest character.
