THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA. Btorj of "Hearer, My God, to Thee." Tn Hymn Wat Written by in English Girl, Who Did Not Live to Know the Glory That Awaltod It. "As a writer, as a poet, there were few in the literary worKl of London in the forties who had not heard of Sarah Flower Adams, the gifted woman to whom all Christendom to day pays homage in its love for her immortal hymn, 'Nearer, My Cod, to Thee,'" writes Clifford Howard in the . February Ladies' Home Journal. "It was written in 1840, and had been subsequently set to music by F.liza Flower, and included in a collection of hymns written and composed by the two sisters. Only within that year had their book of 'Hymns and An thems' been published, and the hymn that was destined to inspire the world had then been heard but once or twice, and within the walls of a single church South Palace Chapel, Lon don. 'It was not, however, until after the year i860, when the present well known tune was composed for it by Dr. Lowell Mason, of Ne-v York, that the hymn attained its widespread popularity. Up to that time it had attracted but little notice. Through the spirit ol Dr. Mason's sympathetic music it was quickened into clorious life and brought within the reach of every congregation and every Christ lan soul. But this was long after the author of the hymn had passed away. She died in 1848, without knowing of the triumph and the glory that awaited her work. Her crave in the little village ot her birth is unmarked by ny monument to her fame." Are You Superstitious in Regard to Eyes? Blue are said to bo the weakest. Upturned eyes are typical of de votion. Wide open eyes are indicative of rashness. Brown eyes are said by occulists to be the strongest. Small eyes are supposed to indicate cunning. 1 he downcast eye has in all ages been tvpical of modesty. The proper distance between the eyes is the width ot one eye. People of melancholic temperament rireiy have clear blue eyes. Eyes with long, sharp corners indi cate great discernment and penetra tion. The white of the eye showing be neath the iris is indicative of nobility of character. Gray ey turning green in anger or excitement are indicative of a chol eric temperament. When the upper lid covers half or more of the pupil the indication is of . codI deliberation. An eye the upper lid of which pass es horizontally across the pupil indi cates mental ability. Unsteady eyes, rapidly jerking from side to side, are indicative of an un settled mind. It is said that the prevailing colors of eyes among the patients of lunatic asylums are brown and black. Smaller Visiting Cards. The new visiting cards, so much reduced in size, are so much more dainty, appropriate and lady like than the useless breadth and length otcara board so lung in vogue. Some of the French styles are as small as the name and address will permit, says the New York Post. Roman lettering has in creased in popularity, and with ultra fashionable women has lor the mo merit superseded script, and certainly has the advantage 01 oeing more iegi ble and of allowing the use of a much smaller card. Hovel Luncheon Favors A Drettv arrangement of favors at recent luncheon masked them under bunches of violets which formed circle around the centrepiece of flowers which was made up ot white lilies, Bands of violet ribbon went to eac cover, each guest drawing her favor by the ribbon when luncheon was over. The presence of the favors was not suspected until the moment for their distribution arrived, and the wreath of violates was an effective addition to the floral scheme. tion RFAVARD. $100. At the meeting he'd Jan. 23d a bill embodying these requests was agreed upon and will be introduced immedi ately and actively supported by all these organizations, most of which have already endorsed by resolution the conclusions of the Conference. Reports made to the Committee jjt Its meeting showed a very general inter est in the matter among the farmers of the State, and that it was receiving very widespread and earnest support. As one indication of this, it was re ported that the subject has been brought before every farmers' institute held in the State this winter and that all of them have by resolution en dorsed the proposed legislation. Among other things they said : "YVe propose to earn tne three days a month which the law remits for good behavior in state prison, and we hope and pray that the com munity will suspend final judgment, until by good conduct and proper lives we will earn their commendation. We are content to suffer ourselves, but we keenly feel the awful sorrow brought upon our families and friends who have stood so nobly by us through it all." The officials at the state prison said Tuesday night in answer to an inquiry that the thirty year sentences of Mc Allister, Campbell and Death will be reduced by good behavior to twenty years, and that Kerr's sentence will be reduced by good behavior to eleven years." 1 Love your children and they will love you in spite ot all your short comings ; keep faith with them and they will keep faith with you ; treat them courteously and they will be courteous 1 maintain high ideals and they will follow them t make them the centre of your life and they will make you the centre of their lives.
