Telephone Lines to Europe Assured by a Late Invention. pr ropln Bell III Wimilerfnl I.iitiK Vliliince ("juIpiii for 'Jilii.oim la Cash nnil a Yrnrly ftnlnrr of T,5MI. The Electrlenl Kevlew announces the purchase by the American Telephone Telegraph coinptiny (the parent Hell company) of the pntents of Dr. M. I l'upln, of Columbia college, which, I! totes, cover the nrt of ocean telephony and which enable telephone incssiiKe to be sent over nny length of lunil lines. It further state that the sum f $2(0,0O0 has Ixen paid to Dr. I'lipin for the Invention, with an annual Hill ary to him during the life of the pat ent of $7,500. The Invention referred to and foi which two palenlt were Issued In June 1D00, In described at length, and it it characterized as one of the most bril liant and exceptional Inventions of Dr Tupin. It was thought necessary in ordrr tr. talk a given distance, say 500 miles, in mnderground cables to employ lurg topper wires covered with Insulating material. The expense of such wire nd material has been suflicient to pre vent the construction of long under ground circuits. Dr. I'upin's invention ia declared to furnish n method where by conductors of relatively miuill di ameter covered with insulating mate rial of moderate thickness may be used in place of the large and expensive con ductors frequently thought to be nec essary. The Electrical Itevlcw, in describing the invention, says: "The essential feature of the inven tion, following the elaborate mathe matical analysis of the subject by Dr. Pupin. consists of the application ot inductance and capacity to such a cir cuit that Is to ull 1 stents and purposes equivalent to a continuous distribu tion of these qualities, but which is at the same time practically possible and commercial. "Inasmuch os practically all waves that are used In the transmission of sig- als or of sounds through the tele- DU. M. I. PUPIN. flnventor of the New Submar'ne Long Distance Telephone System.) phones are of a highly complex charac ter, containing many elements of dif ferent wave length and frequency, and since the attenuation suffered by any wave Is directly dependent upon its frequency nnd wave length, it happens that in ordinary circuits waves are not only attenuated and dampened in the amplitude of their vibration, but are also distorted by the more rapid sup pression of their hgh frequency ele ments nnd thus so transformed char acter that, particularly In the case of telephonic work, they renmin no longer recognizable as the original waves im pressed upon the sending end of the circuit. "Dr. I'upin's investigation, begun by considering the. remarkable physical naloirv between the case of a vibrat ing string and that of un electrical conductor transmitting waves, led hiin to conclude that a foriiiulu might be arrived at expressing the dimensions f inductance colls and condensers nec essary to odd to a given circuit in or der to. produce an effect suiliciently close to the ideal distortionless circuit for practicable purposes. "Experimenting with artificial con ductors, he discovered tliut it was pos sible to telephone over vastly greater lengths of cable of high capacity than kud ever been nosiuble before, und that. ao far as land line telephone or rapid telegraphy is concerned, he was able ao to Improve existing conditions as to Make any reasonable or desired length f telephonic circuit easily possible. Indeed, iu the paper read before the American Institute of Electrical En gineers at Philadelphia, May 18, 1'JUO, lie showed a design for inductance coils l hn Introduced at appropriate Inter rals in the length of a transatlantic cable, which, he demonstrated, would iTs,ur ithonlc conversation to be held across the Atlnntic ocean. "It is believed bv those who have in vestiirated the subject fully that the Improvement w hich his inventions con template will enable xeiepnouy land lines of any length that are in use to-day, and will solve the difflcult and .iirDntn nrotilem oi oceuniu inc phony." - Iforae Races with Train. Capt. Baron Holding, of the Baden dragoons, receutly rode a horse on the pBblio highway 15 kilometers-, or nine miles, in 25 minute. He raced against railroad train to Carlsruhe and beat It by eight minutes, the horse had iin trained for weeks ou a new form of horse cake. Once Waa Jefferson' slave. INSANITY IN ARMY CAMPS. Medical Anthnrltr That Hot Infrequently Mllltarr Command era Are Mrnlnllr tlnhnlanrrit. Menial disease In military life may be more common and more productive of evil than we think. If an insane commander is given such a position that all subordinates cannot possibly criticise or make their suspicions known for fenr of the swift punish ment that follows lark of discipline insidious and awful errors and wrongs may result and may continue a long time before superior and far-away ottlceM suspect the true condition, It Is said that during a recent war a balloon was sent up which. Instead of denning the enemy s position, re- vealed that of the general ordering I the balloon, nnd of his troops, to loo gunners who only awaited the Indi cation to play havoc with their shells, says the Philadelphia Medical .lour, mil.
