He looks after the spiritual welfare of a Method ist congregation in Binghamton, N Y. The charge is a desirable one, and the environment most pleasant, But the divioe had a desire to become thoroughly familiar with the life of a tramp, and the only way to get it he thought was to gel out and circulate among them. ' So with motives of purely religious nature he became tramp. Traveling with a gang of hoboes, his only possession a few ragged clothes and a pocket full of tracts, he with the rest of the outfit was ghthered in by the Cortland police. On being arranged before the authorities the minister explained thai he had donned ragged garments and without a cent he had started out to Deat his way to Chicago to study tramp life. He talked so convincing ly that h'e was given his freedom, and ! on leaving presented the Judge with a ; tract as a souvenir of his visit. He is now a much admired hero, and de servingly so. There are no doubt many engaged in similar calling who would and do study the various exist ing conditions ot life, but few indeed who would make such personal sacri fice to obtain such knowledge. Outside of England and her colonies the development of Masonry was by no means rapid, but the church early took the alarm, and in 1738 Clement XII. condemned it in his bull In emi nenti. No reason for this was alleged except its secrecy and that under its rules men ot all religions associate to gether, giving rise to suspicious evil, wherefore all members incur excom munication removable only by the Pope, and all bishops are instructed to prosecute and punish them as vehem ently suspect of hersy. As the Parle ment of Paris refused to register this bull, it could scarce accomplish much outside of the Papal States, except in Spain, but within them it was render ed effective by an edict of the Card inal Secretary of State, January 14, '839, pronouncing irremissible pain of death, not onlv on all members but on all who tempt others to join or favor the society in any way, such as leasing a house for its use. This was a declaration of war to the knife, al though the only victim of the death penalty is said to have been the French author of a book on Masonry. Henry C. THE COLUMBIAN, Olerk and Carrier Examination, De cember 15, 1900- The United States Civil Service Commission announces that on De cember 15, 1900, an examination will be held in this city for the positions of clerk and carrier in the post-office service. An examiuation was recently held which fai'ed to result in a suffi cient number of eligibles to meet the needs of the service; consequently it is necessary to hold another examina tion All persons who have been examin ed for the position of cletk or carrier within the past year and failed to pass may be reexamined upon filing new applications in due time. This examination offers an excell ent opportunity for entering the Fed eral service to bright, energetic young persons who are not afraid of hard work, and the Commission hopes that a sufficient number of intelligent, ac tive persons will present themselves for this examination. It may be stat ed that there is a wider field for ad vancement upon merit in the Federal service than in many private employ ments, not only by promotion in the same office, but by transfer to other parts of the service. j The nature of the examination is a test of practical, general intelligence, I and of adaptability in post-ofllce work, j The age limitations for this examina tion are as follows: Clerk, not less than 18 years. Carrier, between 21 and 40 years. Applicants for carrier must be at least 5 ft. 4 in. in height, and weigh not less than 125 pounds. Female ap plicants are not required to have this certificate executed. This examination is open to all citizens of the United States who may desire to entsr the service, and who comply with the requirements. All such persons are invited to auply, but attention is invited to the fact that from those certified the Department usually selects for appointment eligi bles who are residents of the diptrict in which the vacancies exist. Appli cants will be examined, graded, and certified with entire impartiality and wholly without regard to any consid eration save their ability as shown by the grade attained in the examination. For application blank (Form 101), full instructions, specimen examina tion questions, and information relative to the duties and salaries of the differ ent positions, application should be made to the undersigned. Applications must be on file with the secretary of the local board before the hour of closing business on De cember 7, 1900. Paul R. Eyerly. Secretary Postal Board. The grub is fed on the usual mulberry leaves, but before it begins to spin is drowned in vinegar and the substance that would have formed the cocoon is drawn from the body as a thick silken thread. The threads are treated with chemicals, dried, put up in bundles of 200 and sold along the Mediterranean.
