THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA. WALK ASHORE! It all happened at one of those pleasant M aide resort, where life la comedy from ly to day and tragedy has no place. She jast stepped on the raft which ahe thought wm moored, and in pnrc idleness of mood fell to rocking it from side to side, nut the raft was not moored. Her rocking had slowly dislodged it from the sand, on which ft was grounded, and when she turned around, she was afloat and the shore a rod behind her. She cried for help and wna beard by a lonely fisherman who sat at Mine distance on the beach mending his nets. How slowly he got lip. How slowly ba tramped across the sandy shore. And aba was drifting, drifting, drifting ! " Save me " 1 she cried, "save tne " I as the old tan came to the water'a edge. The griz aled mariner raised his hand to the side of hia mouth ami cried hoarsely, "Walk ahore ! That's all there was of it. She was still in shoal water. All she needed was the timely word of instruction and advice. But suppose it had not come? Suppose she had not heeded it? Was there no danger? The open sea, a frail raft, and a frailer woman ! The woman on the raft is a type of hun dreds of thousands of her sex who are drifting into danger. Up to a definite day, they have been enjoying life in perfect security. Then, in a moment, a sense of impending danger comes. They are at the mercy of disease. Every day increases tha danger. They are drifting, drifting, drift ing. Then comes the cry for help. To thousands of appeals there has come the answer from Dr. R. V. Pierce, chief con sulting physician to the Invalids' Hotel nd Surgical Institute, Buffalo, N. Y., WALK ASHORE ! WALK ASHORE ! ! You are still in the shallow waters of disease. You can still get back without more than inconvenience to the land of health behind you. All you need is just the right word of advice and common senRe instruction in time, and the grip of a helping hand. That isjust what Dr. Pierce offers to every one suffering from disease ; timely, health restoring, life saving advice, practical help. It requires some confidence to take advice when your own senses are against it. The woman on the raft could not see the bottom of the roily water, and the land looked so far away. So the woman in disease can't see how she can be cured, and recovery of health seems hopeless. And, perhaps, the very disease that has begun to threaten her is consumption, that dreadful dieease regarded by millions as incurable. Her local doctors perhaps say, "we can make your suffering a little less, bat there's no hope." Does Dr. Pierce claim to cure consump tion? That question isn't worth arguing Look at tlu record. Take a case in point. Here is a man (or woman) with a hacking eovgh, a hectic flush, night-sweats, great ema ciation or wasting of tlcsh, spitting of blood, shortness of breath and all the other symptoms. After every remedy and every local physician has failed, he, as a last resort, takes "Golden Medical Discovery " and the cough vanishes, the cheek gets back tts natural color, sleep becomes sound and refreshing, the spitting of blood stops, flesh aud muscles become Arm, weight increases, und life goes along in quiet and com fort to the full limit of the three score years nd ten. But may he it wasn't consumption after all ? May be it wasn't. Ynu know it was something that was attacking the very citadel of life, and it was something that was cured by the use of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. And Dr. Pierce is curing such " somethings " right nlong with a record of over a quarter of a million cases, and not more than three per cent, of failures. One fact, at least, is well established. That the 'Goden Medical Discovery" does cure weak lungs, bleeding from lungs, obstinate, lingering coughs, laryngitis, bronchitis, throat disease, and kindred'aMtctions of the air tms sagrs, which, if neglected or badly treated, lead up to consumption, can no longer be doubted in view of the many thousands of well estab lished cures of such cases rctsuled by the most trustworthy citizens. Many of these "cases have been pronounced consumption and incurable by the best local physicians before the suffer ers commenced the use of Dr. Pierce s Golden Medical Discovery. Whether the doctors have erred in their judgment in these numerous cases or not is uot fur us to decide. PHOTOGRAPHING A BATTLE. Tne Iucessant Whistle of Ilullets la Kot Exactly Conducive to Good Work. Many people have litul Ideas of pho togTaphing' a battle, A photograph of Alouuer river would reveul nothing but it bure stretch of veldt with a line of mllowhancl poplars in the background. Sot a I'ocr could be Keen, and even our own nun were almost invisible as they lay there in suml-colored khaki, keeping aliberul live paces apart only here and there where a slight undulation gave a precarious cover could one see the khaki bucks clustered together like u iwurm of locusts on the plain, says Scribner's, Personally, having been fortunate anough to lind a small ant-hill for my bead protection, 1 endeavored to take lew snapshots with a kodak, not be cause there was anything to take, but in order to give some idea of the baru aspect of a modern battlefield, but I am free to confess that, to let go the y.hutter and still keep one's head be tind an ant-heap proved fo difficult an operation that it was a pure matter of ehacee whether I photographed the 'eldt or the sky. The incessant whistle of bullets is not good for photography, though, cu riously enough, it, encourages sleep, Many men dozed oil' that morning un der the rays of a particularly insistent sun, only to be awakened by the bursting of a big shell or the repeated reports of a most disugreeuble quick firing1 gun employed by the enemy with qual Impartiality against our firing line and our hospital wagons. All the morning the one cheering note waa the incessant reports of our own field pieces and naval guns. Karly In the day the two Held batteries had moved round from our extreme right and came tip in the center just a little to the eaBt of the ruilway and did most magnificent work. We are to Introduce our waren Into Fuerto Rico free of charge, and Puerto Rico Is to be taxed on everything she produces and sends us. Just how con gress can discuss this with a straight face we do not pretend to say. Wash ington Post, Ind. Rep. Why should we treat the Taclflc Isl ands, 2,000 miles from our coaRt, as American territory? Why should we discriminate thus, in defiance of all precedent, practice, promises and the constitution of the United States? Chicago Inter-Ocean, Rep. The Insults and baffling which Mr. McKlnley had to suffer In his policy of "expansion," show In actual prac tice what was clear in theory from the beginning that protection goes with expansion about as well as strychnine goes with beefsteak. New York Even ing Post If the people of this country wish to get rid of the trusts they must first get rid of Manna, McKlnley and Griggs, who are owned, body, boots and breeches, by the trusts. With a presi dent In the White House who will en force the laws the trust question will quickly be settled. Chicago Chronicle. The United States senate Is Repub lican. It does not need the vote of Quay for any party measure. If it de liberately violates law and defies the popular will by seating Quay the peo ple will hold the Republican party re sponsible for such violation of national decency. Chicago Times-Herald, Rep. The Republican party is pledged to bimetallism. Were we blunderers when we shouted over and over again for re monetlzatlon. I want the double stand ard. So do 1,300,000.000 of people of this world of ours, while only 200,000, 000 want the single gold standard. We want the real money of the world to be' $8,000,000,000 In coin. They want it to be only $4,000,000,000. The difference means Injustice, injury, suffering and distress to millions of God's poor people the world over, while the gold class is to wax fat at the cost of their helpless victims. Senator Chandler, Rep. New York is on the threshold of a Democratic redemption. In 1896 the Black majority was 246,000. It was Clevelandlsm that did that. In 1897 It bleached to 80,000. In 1S98 It whit ened out still further, and stood as 18,500. In 1899 the Republicans in their superiority fade and pale to a trifle above 9,000. In 1900 mark "The Verdict's" word that superiority will have died and disappeared buried un der a Bryan plurality of 60,000. And all this makes the morose and sulky reason of present Republican gloom. The farther they travel the darker it gets. The Verdict. Attorney General Griggs declared In his speech at Qulncy, Ills., referring to the Philippine war, that "the Filipinos of Luzon who have attempted to drive the lawful authority of the . United States from the island, comprise not one-tenth of 1 per cent of the people of these islands." This is very thrill ing, but let us figure a little. If there are 8,000,000 people in the Philippines and less than one-tenth of 1 per cent of them are opposing our authority we are oonfronte'8 by not more than 8,000 enemies. , Yet the secretaries of war and navy announce that within the six weeks they will have 70,000 troops and 50 warships on or about the Islands to suppress the 10,000 insurgents. Some of the end men of the McKlnley cara van have no sense of proportion. De riding the Filipinos as cowardly sav ages, they proclaim It takes nine Amer icans to down one Filipino. Pittsburg Post. Since the cession Puerto Rico has been denied the principal markets she had long enjoyed, and our tariffs have been continued against her products as when she was under Spanish sov ereignty. The markets of Spain are closed to her products except upon terms to which the commerce of all nations Is subjected. The Island of Cuba, which used to buy her cattle and tobacco without customs duties, now Imposes the same duties upon those products as from any other coun try entering her ports. She has, there fore, lost her free Intercourse with Spain and Cuba without any compen sating benefits in this market. Her coffee was little knowo. and not In use by our people, and, therefore, there was no demand here for this, one of her chief products. The markets of the United States should be opened up to her products. Our plain duty is to abolish all customs tariff between the United States and Puerto Rico, and give her products free access to our markets. McKlnley's Message. BE INDEPENDENT. O. IIOIMt., Attest : President of the Town Council- Fhkbzb Quick, Secre, ury lSl.oovtsHURG, I'a., April 9, 1900. We, the utulersicned. auditors of the Town of Hloomsburg, do say that we met at the Council Room for the purpose of r fonning our duties, and that we have 0 na med the books of the secretary and lunl tr.eia correct, and that the balance in the hanilso! the treasurer is correct. We disapprove of members of the Coitnci1, directly, or indirectly, working on the streets of the town, furnishing teams or supplies We shall feel it our duty, hereafter, to enter protest to the payment of all such bills. V. II. FRKK.E, ) WM. KRICKUAUM, Auditors. CEO. K. WILHUK, ) In signing the above report I must, how ever, object to the issuing of ft 5,000. 00 of orders for borrowed money, because the same is contrary to law, and that said or ders are invalid j and further, that it lw lejn observed that one member of Council has a bill of $109.00, at $2.00 per day, while other members have furnished material aiiJ clone work, both in a direct nndindire.t w.iy, nnd it has becu ascertained that nicinlic" have done work on llie streets and the sane has been returned as done by other part:. Frorp the nature and condition of things it 1 impossible for the board of auditors, as a board, to make the investigation necessary t make a full nnd complete report, thus leav ing it to the citizens of the town to further investigate, if they deem it proper to do w- I do this on the ground that one meml of the boaid of auditors has no authority W employ counsel, or order a lull and caieul investigation to re made.
